During the certification course for my shotgun license, we were taught that in case of a misfire, shoulder the gun, keep it pointed down range for 30-60 seconds, and THEN, crack the gun, or unload the cartridge, because if it is the cartridge and it goes off, having the gun open or not pointed down range would not be very fun.

A new gun can be as bad as an old gun for causing misfires. Fiocchi cases do have a slightly thinner rim than say Cheddite cases and this means that the primer face can be further from the pin end. I have had this debate with some other shooters recently but the probability of getting 5 bad cartridges in one packet when there a ten of thousands of empty cases randomly going into a loading machine is huge odds. Pin length, rim thickness, pin wear and movement and headspace are all factors in good firing. I know primer cup metals are different between the brands and use millions of Fiocchi and Cheddite cases every year in our loading. Sometimes a particular gun does just not like one case or another, that is the fact. I shoot a Miroku and it has no problem with either but when I did one day the problem was dirty pins inside the action and poor striking. A proper clean like taking the whole action out and bathing it solved the problem and its been fine since. A friends Blaser F3 had copper slivers inside the action which did not allow the pins to fully strike, a disassemble and clean has cured it. Please don't always blame the cartridge first up.

Lots of information, thank you. May I add that it’s not good practice to give instruction or information, which shows or teaches something that should never be done. Only show the correct method, ensuring the student knows that it’s the only way to do something and any way else is incorrect. I was trained as a firearms instructor in the British Army. My experience tells me that there are people out there who don’t always listen intently to instructions but they try to remember what they saw. It's funny ( Strange ) how in the UK there are so many classifications of Guns/ Firearms, and some are just odd to us over here in North America. In Canada, a Firearm is pretty much any weapon system that uses gunpowder/smokeless/black powder/ pyrodex etc. to propel a projectile, AND any compressed-air weapon capable of firing a projectile faster than 495 feet-per-second. So. Shotguns ARE firearms. We basically have 4 classifications: Non-firearm ( Bows, crossbows air weapons below 495fps), Non-restricted ( nearly all rifles/shotguns for sporting/ target/ hunting purposes), Restricted ( which are most handguns, and most semi-automatic centrefire military-type weapons) and Prohibited, where there's such a confusing list of items that it's ridiculous ( handguns with barrels shorter than 106mm/ 4.1 inches), plus all Semi-automatic rifles not covered in Restricted, All previously deactivated full-auto capable firearms, and anything "banned but not confiscated" or not " grandfathered" to the last registered owner.
A Possession and Acquisition Licence allows ownership and use of any Non-restricted firearm and the purchase of same, and associated ammo.
It allows for the purchase of ALL ammunition regardless of type/ use except explosive tip.
The only other classes are Restricted, and Prohibited, of which Prohibited is no longer issued. If you maintained your prohibited license after it was discontinued, you could continue to renew it, but if you fail to renew before it expires, it's gone forever. (an error which I made and have long since regretted. )
Just musing about when you said that a shotgun is not a firearm.
