  • Holy Ravioli! Phony Rigatony is finally out! I'm so excited to see what everyone thinks about it so please leave a review. The boys, Maddie, and I have been working on this for about three months, so please leave a like and share. I'm hoping Phony Rigatony will soon be a household name. Thanks for the support everyone and thank you to the crew that worked on this 0$ budget short film.
This project was the most challenging and time-consuming one I have ever done. What started as an idea for a 1-minute skit turned into a 15-minute short film with a full score, VFX, and animations. Phony Rigatony is the definition of biting off more than you (Logan Randazzo) can chew.
When doing the first recording session, all the lines were improvised. We had a very general idea of where we wanted the story to go and we just allowed the improved lines to take us there. While less work is on the front end, not planning properly and writing a script makes editing a far more difficult job. When Andrew Aucoin and I sat down to start editing we realized the inconsistencies in the takes couldn't be "fixed in post" which led us to having to do a reshoot to fill in the gaps. This time, we planned the shots we wanted. After getting these we were satisfied and resumed editing.
I ended up going on a trip to the Northeast and while walking the streets of Philly with my headphones in listening to the Oppenheimer score, I had an idea. I thought of a way to take the barebones concept we had and create it into an actual narrative. A scene where Tony begins to reflect realizing that he has been to change for the worse. And another reflection where he sees his life flash before his eyes. To get this idea across, we were going to need shots from all over to make Tony's life seem more lived. Thankfully, Andrew was in Europe when this idea struck me.
When both Andrew and I had returned, we rallied the crew and began writing the story, creating characters with backstory and development (or lack of it in Tony's case). We chose our favorite improved lines and managed to write a complete story with all these fragments we had obtained along the way. After two more shoots, we managed to get all the filming done, but this was only half the problem.
Earlier in the production, I had decided to stylize the intro sequence using After Effects. Now with all this new content, I didn't want that stylization to just disappear, so I decided to double down and learn After Effects animation. Another issue was the computer. We only had one, so what we ended up doing was Andrew would edit while I would compose the score, and when Andrew was tired, I would take over. After many hours of editing, Andrew and I got to a point where we could send it to Jackson Fontanille.
While I would call myself an experienced editor, I know my limitations and sound is one of those. Thankfully, Jackson knew what to do, so he took all the audio components and worked his mixing magic to get us the product we hear now.
After three months of work, Phony Rigatony was finally released and I am happy to say that I know far more about film production than I ever thought I would. Thanks for watching and if you are seeing this, thanks for reading.
A group of friends set out to start their own pizza joint but to get the cash, they must get their hands dirty. Phony Rigatony, the leader of this goofy gang, must find out who he truly is as his world crumbles after making a fatal mistake. Will Tony choose to be an honest man, or will he live up to his name?
