I've recently realised that there's certain aspects of proper treatment that change as you get older 1. Questioning how you get treated - if you are being treated unfairly, will you even notice? 2. Formulating demands for treatment - are you mature enough to understand what fair treatment should look like? 3. receiving proper treatment - Are you receiving fair treatment? In elementary school: ❌️➖️➖️ - Teachers could be way too strict with elementary student and the students wouldn't know any better, they know nothing and don't realize they deserve better - I'm sure we can all relate to the lunch advisors throwing your lunch away while you were in the bathroom, basically telling you to cry about it when you complain, and then yelling at you for crying about it. but you don't realize that life isn't supposed to be that bad to you. Middle school: ✅️❌️➖️ by middle school you can start to tell that authority figures are being disrespectful, and you want something to change about that but you can't properly express what changes need to be made, you only have an express but yet unplanned end goal. you want better treatment but you don't know what better treatment actually looks like, just that it's something your goal is attain. it can create this sorta dunning-kreuger area of estimating the dire of your current condition. it's really where this "Im14andthisisdeep" mentality stems from, you understand you're in a system that needs to change for the better, yet you may still overestimate how it affects you or what might be a privilege vs a right. I particularly believe this is the kind of mentality shown in this video. the way Braces received a punishment far less serious than why they were being punished in the first place; Set grandma's hair on fire = 30 minutes no switch. Braces then makes a mountain out of a molehill, acting like they were strip of human rights, like they are a prisoner, a much more serious situation, they are overestimating their situation. they are also confusing privilege with right, the switch is a privilege but Braces' reaction suggest they think that it's a right that's at stake, they believe the punishment has a far greater effect on them when really the crime far outweighed the punishment to begin with. I'll run through these next two with brevity. Highschool ✅️✅️❌️ highschoolers tend to understand far better what people properly deserve and yet they still don't receive. common demands a highschooler might request often include things that have helped human survival as a species, such as rest, and socialization, autonomy. yet they are often still confined to stuff like quite literally not being able to piss without the approval of higher-ups. as they are still perceived as immature. college students ✅️✅️✅️ finally seen as mature, college students finally are treated as equals with the right to speak out and be heard, not that this come without problems. after nearly two decades of some degree of abuse/ dehumanization, college students may find it takes time to adjust to a life where they do not have to bide and buffet on mistreatment, this newfound respect can often come across as jarring and may take some time to get used to. as they say, "You know everything at 15, and you know nothing at 22"
