All your vids are great ...putting an exploder 8.8 in my Jeep tj, was running Lincoln locked 8.25 ...ran a traclok dana35 and preferred that over welded rear. Snow and mud a real tight limited slip just seems a bit easier especially on side angles. A vids on assembly of the traclok including wiggling of spiders and dreaded s spring would be awesome ( colorful and entertaining too LOL )... anyway great vids, thanks for taking the time to make them.
@SternLX I've found that is not a good idea. The newer thicker plates and fibers that are produced now causes the last steel not to have enough spline contact on the side gear using the SFSFSFS shim.
@scrochy66 Working on a 9.75" is pretty much like an 8.8" however the traction-lok is a good bit different. The 8.8" TL can be removed with the carrier still in the rear end housing. You have to remove the carrier and some special compressing tools are needed to remove the TL clutch pack on the 9.75".
@dupont4sure I have no idea what you have but I dought it would be the traction-lok. Normally a shudder from a clutch pack will only be felt turning in a curve. It might be best to take it to a shop you like to deal with so they can drive it.
If you measure the pack as shown by using the correct shim, it should work fine. Be sure there's not an old shim still stuck in the carrier before installation.
@2rzTacoSr5 Sure, and I've done the 8 fiber setup as well. Many of the newer side gears only half about 50% contact and it's unclear if more fibers last longer or gives you more lock action than just using a tight 6 fiber setup. I haven't seen where the aftermarket sells any 8 fiber kits which tells me they don't see a value in it. But there's lots of guys that really believe in the extra plates and that's okay by me.
Some effort ...LOL! I did it by compressing the s spring in a vise and using a high quality thin stainless wire ( kinda like safety wire ) ...the wire was wrapped around several times on each end and tightened via twisting. Kinda scary and I treated it like a bomb ...but it worked. That is one serious spring.
so what is so different about the 9.75 from the 8.8? if the clutch packs are worn then when you take it out what has to be replaced besides the packs when they go in and how should they go? any further adjustment with the ring & pinion? install will be done on the truck, thanks!
Good video thank-you. I've been overhauling an 8.8 rear diff on a 2001 ford ranger, 4L auto RWD. The frictions were shot in it and it had obviously been messed with before we got the truck. I have replaced the worn parts but cannot figure out how to get the S spring back in. A royal pain in the !#@?. I'm sure there is a practicle way but I have yet to figure it out and have not come across this issue online. all the video's seem to skip that part. Any help in regards to that would be very helpfull. Your video's are really well done, lots of information very well explained. Thanks. Steve.

@funshootin1 Rotating the spiders into place with the correct pack clearance isn't a problem. Putting the S spring in takes some effort. I show how to use needle nose visegrips in the full length DVD to get the job done.

I have a question, in a trac loc rebuild kit from ford racing, they only give you 6 steels and 6 fibers, I have a 93 GT 8.8 rear, am i supposed to use two old steel shims that are shiny to work with this setup?
I've never seen a Ford 4 & 3 clutch pack that far off. Checking some of my used parts, on average, steels are .080" and fibers are .095"-.100" thick. Therefore, on average, a 4 & 3 pack without shim, would be .620" max. If your steels are .080", then removing one would make your pack .638" which is fine. The shim kit normally has shims .030" .035" .040" and .045" and sometimes the original shims are .025". I would think you can get what you need with the correct shim.
It's very likely you have worn clutches. You'll have to pull the inspection plate, pull the axles and remove the clutch packs to see what you have. Always do both sides when making a repair.
Is it absolutely necessary to place the S spring. I heard in forums it only benefits when its extremely slippery like mud or rain. Is this true, what would happen if I leave it out. Thnks

Yes, the c-clamp method will work but I've found the measurement comes out to .750"-.755" for the 9.75. Understand that servicing the 9.75 TL is completely different from the 8.8".
I have this problem on my 2001 GT Mustang, i just noticed that only the right tire is spinning, i've read that it probably needs a T Lock rebuild or the friction fluid is too old, what should i do?
+skabands You will likely find that the spider pin won't slide between the axle ends with that thick pack clearance. Also, the spider gears might not rotate into the carrier housing because the side gears are now too close together. Give it a try, if it won't go then set it to the correct clearance.
Having steel to steel makes no sense to me. On my 2001 Explorer I use steel...fiber...steel...fiber...steel...fiber.. steel, and a shim of the thickness required to end up with .655" total thickness. That utilizes both sides of the fibers for a better clutch grip. No problems what so ever. Too thick of a clutch pack may make it difficult to insert the C Clip, but nothing to do with stopping the pin into the gear case. I have one axle end that has too much clearance from the pin. I'm afraid that the C Clip could fall out. What I have decided to do is weld a steel washer of the appropriate size and thickness on the end of the axle and carefully dress up the end surfaces with the side of a metal cutting disc. In that way the C Clip will be recessed when the pin is in. I don't want that C Clip coming out when miles away from help.

Actually I found the best 3 disc layout not to be: Gear-S-F-S-S-F-S-F-Shim I reverse the last 4 in the pack so the shim isn't riding on a Fiber, Or: Gear-S-F-S-F-S-F-S-Shim Note it alternates and 2 steels are never together. The original stack in the 80's was to control heat between the fibers. Use the newer Carbon discs and heat becomes a non-issue.
Normally, only the SuperCoupes had iron IRS 8.8" rear's with traction-lok. and 28 spline half shafts. If you can't find a SC, then buy a traction-lok carrier from Ford Racing.

Also, with the shim on the gear face, the pack is now shifted over which could cause the last steel to have less tooth engagement on the gear's clutch spline. There's a chance their instructions show the normal Ford way and the photo was just shot wrong.
thankyou today i couldnt get the axles to slip in enough past the s spring to get the c clips in the axles i was able to squeeze the c clips in with the s spring removed should i just run without the s spring
Normally, if the axle can't be push in enough, it's because the wheel stud is hitting part of the back plate or an antilock wheel sensor needs to be removed.
That is the normal setup except there will likely only have room for 4 steels. Therefore, gear-s-f-ss-f-s-f-shim. That would be the best overall layout. The extra steel next to the gear is of no value.

I shouldn't have said clearance but say pack thickness instead. As I show in the video, stack the pack together with a C clamp and measure the pack thickness. Normally .655" is about as thick as you can go. If you go thicker using a thicker shim, you will likely not be able to install the spider gears or be able to install the spider gear pin because there won't be enough space. But the thicker you can make the pack, the tighter the clutches will hold.

110% correct set out for plates 1st Stella plate to gear then fiber etc etc. Work a whole lot btr and for longer!
Your Explorer should already have the big spring pn. F3TZ-4214-A. Same one used in the F150 and any of the 31 spline units.
@351capri There should be eight internal splined steels in the kit. Looks like you got shorted. You could just use two of your old steels.

Using the method shown in the clip, I've found that .660" is about max. After that, it's going to be very hard to get the spider gear pin installed.

Yes I have a clip on the S spring installation. Just scroll through the BadShoe clips to find it. Check Summit to start looking for parts.

Maybe but tightening up the clearance is move important in reducing brake-away torque.

@ed9diaz 85 and later V8 Mustangs with 8.8" rears have the TL. 4 and 6 cyl. Mustangs will normally have 7.5" open rears.

My new pack is .718" (4 steels & 3 friction plus the shim). Can I remove a steel wher there are 2? The .045" shim is still too thick if I do that.

What might happen is one wheel water burnouts.

Austin Mathis If you're installing a locker, I would think the clutches are removed. I fact, most drop in lockers only fit open carriers.

+THE G MAN I don't have a new fiber in stock to measure. However, I have in my notes that .085" is about the min. wear thickness for re-use.
How about the stiffer S spring, Ford aprts has no clue. What model would it be installed in?

You might try a Torsen carrier. Sounds like you need a 4X4.

noob Question: do foxbody mustang lx's come stock with a traction lok differential? my cousin only says the gt's came with it.

I used my stock shim .45 and got .665 is this too thick? Or Do I need to used the new .40 shim instead

Jamarlin Lowe They are 28 spline side gears so you have to stick with 1985-2004 V8 Mustangs or simply buy new gears.
The traction-Lok for the 9 and 8 inch is completely different from an 8.8 inch rear.
How do you set the clearence pack to the thick side?
Use a thicker shim.

This video only applies to the 8.8". The 9.75"/10.5" and the Dana are completely different.

Should be fine, .660" was the thickness I used for this project.

@@badshoeproductions i have the old and new set of shims thats all I have so imma just throw them together. So wen u say clearance u talkin about the space between the shim and spring?
I shouldn't have said clearance but say pack thickness instead. As I show in the video, stack the pack together with a C clamp and measure the pack thickness. Normally .655" is about as thick as you can go. If you go thicker using a thicker shim, you will likely not be able to install the spider gears or be able to install the spider gear pin because there won't be enough space. But the thicker you can make the pack, the tighter the clutches will hold.
