    Recently I was tagged by Cool Kid Survival to show off my go to Bushcraft vs Tactical Knife. I did go out side his guidelines a bit just because the decisions were impossible to make with so many good choices. These are my thoughts on my current go to options for bushcraft and tactical (survival) knives.

    Good video Joe, glad to see the strongarm was on your list. I generally agree scandi grinds are awesome, no way could I , on disability, afford an LT Wright, but my Mora companion is very good. Keep up the great videos

    I own a William Collins WCSK and I wouldn't trade it for any knife I've seen on any videos my backup is a Mora garberg and I don't think anyone would go wrong with these two. I think the William Collins Master woodsman is a fine knife and I wouldn't mind owning one but I choose the WCSK and I'm not sorry in the least!

    Go to bushcraft is Jeff White Bush one, tactical is Gerber prodigy. Both great knives. However I have lots of great knives in collection including LTW, BHK, Condor, Schrade etc....

    I do agree with many, Joe. Is the Gerber Strong Arm the only production knife of consideration? I know that you wanted to spotlight your favorites, without categorizing. I thank you for this. Many of us do not have tons of money to pour out for knives that probably were sent to a unique group of RUclipsrs for free (in many cases) for review. We are still too busy getting our car preps, our home preps, and a descent bug out kits together, while still maintaining a fed family. I'd suggest another "Go To Budget Knives" video, if you would consider this. I personally cannot spend over $100 on any knife, my financial situation concerned. Thanks for a look at these, and why you like them. Educational for sure.

      I totally understand where you are coming from Alan. If it weren't for being a RUclipsr, I wouldn't own but even a fraction of what I do. Yes, I most definitely will hit up the Go To Budget Blades sometime soon. Thanks so much! And please keep the suggestions and requests coming :)

    Had a gerber strongarm till somebody stole it, was a damn good knife used it as my go to for everything, an I have a lot of knives to choose from, but I always gravitated towards this one.

    When I was a kid in the late 1960's early 1970's I had a 4" fixed blade knife and these were called either a SHEATH KNIFE, or a SCOUT KNIFE, that was it, no fancy names, no hype, it was simply a case of asking my father for a knife, he went to the shop and bought a SHEATH KNIFE, such happy simple days.

  • @ALWhiteAuthor

    I paused it at 2:28 to say how surprised I was that you didn't pull out your own knife. It really is a solid design and it's obviously one you like since you designed it with... well... YOU in mind. Okay. Carry on.
    You remember way back in the old days when we used to have to walk in natural material hiking boots uphill in the snow both ways to get to RUclips and they had that "Post video response" button on every single video? Man... those were the good old days.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 лет назад +1

      Actually I started after they got rid of the video reply but I do remember folks being upset about not having it anymore. And I didn't include my knife for 2 reasons. 1) I am obviously bias and I don't want to come across as I am pushing mine on anyone. If it sells, I want it to sell because it stands on it's own and folks like it, not because I "sold" it. 2) Jon over at The Wingman 115 has it so I don't have it in hand to show it off on video right now. That being said, the BF Woodsman is everything my woodcrafter is in my opinion. And given more people dislike recurves then like them, The Woodsman is I am sure a more popular knife. Thanks!

    I own a mountain of knives and I'm partial right now to my Bark River Bravo 1.25 LT 3v. But I guess it comes down to how we train our hands to the skills we practice. Over in India they use Kukris for everything. They clear brush, prune trees and prep dinner with the same blade. I did that myself with the Cold Steel Kukri for a year. And I could carve anything big or small after a while with it after awhile. Great video!🥇

    Hello from Kentucky land between the lakes. Home of the famous beast of LBL.
    All very sweet knives. I been looking for the Gerber 💪 but right now I had to settle for the Gerber prodigy. I love this knife. Its tuff sharpens real nice and holds a fine edge. I liked it so much I went out and baught another one to put in my survival pack. And the other I keep inside my truck alone with 50ft of paracord. Thanks for sharing. An Awsome review on all blades. God bless 🇺🇸

      @feralwoodcraft  7 лет назад +3

      Yeah, I purposefully limited myself to 1 per maker just to help keep the video as short as possible lol. I really like the NSK from LT but the Genesis will likely always be my favorite LT knife. Thanks!

      @watermain48 7 лет назад +1

      I get that for sure. I really like the handle on the NSK, it works well for my big old sandwich clamps. I don't have a Genesis, but I do have a GNS which is also a great knife.

  • @recycled3654

    Yeah, I finally got rid of all the deep survival/tactical knives, gave them away or sold them. As a knifenut, I think I'm learning that by examining my true needs from time to time, by looking at versatility and usefulness as my needs narrow down, tend to define a knife or style of knife I should be using. So really, my trajectory has kinda brought me back full circle, appreciating those older designs made with proven reliable materials. Maybe I've found my focus niche.

  • @tonydowd8566

    excellent choices all. I have some customs but for my 1 go to bushcraft/survival/tactical knife, it would be the BK 9. unbelievable dependability. it's not a perfect fit for any of these titles, but will suffice in all of these categories. I like my little Condor kephart for woodcrafting. I recently gave my son my tactical SOG 2000. And, my BK 16 or ESEE 6 would work well in most survival situation's. I really enjoy your knife videos. God bless.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 лет назад

      No kidding John. This was just the tip of the iceberg really. I think what my favorites really boil down to anymore is sentiment. The more sentimental value, whether gained by experiences with it or by who made or gave it to me, has the most to do with anything as far as favorites go. This list was built on function moreso then anything else though. Thanks!

    Fox fx-133 is a good multi purpose knife. Chops well considering length and weight. 12.5 inches and 13.6 ounces. LT Wright gen.3 is a Kephart on steroids. Most weight is in the handle but handle fills my large hands. .177 inch(4.5 millimeters) blade stock, O1, convex.

    • @Airik1111bibles
      @Airik1111bibles 4 года назад

      Heck yeah you can its excellent.... I actually like where the sheath locks I to the handle its like thumb scallops for detailed carving. Also you can grind down the finger guards , I've owned three and end up gifting them away 😂 Now I have the Gertber Prodigy fine edge Walmart exclusive which is a great knife.
      The Prodigy was discontinued and IMO has a more comfortable grip but is to slick...The Strongarm replaced it and is the better design esp if you put a nice convex edge on them they rock. This is an old comment did ya get one?

    Those are nice knives, but as for bushcrafting I would want a knife with a longer blade than the last one you showed us. I have a Schrade SCHF26 as my primary carry knife and have so many more which can be used also for bushcrafting and love them. The knives you showed are high priced knives except the Gerber knife, but I don't like partially serrated blades or fully serrated blades.

    Great video and yes you ramble a lot LOL. But it does make sense what you say. The one that really got my attention is the BHK Featherstick. The LT Wright Genesis might be already a bit big for my intended use. I have been eyeballing the Bushcrafter though. Problem is I live in Europe so the p&p is usually a lot and also we have to pay taxes on it making it all rather expensive.Probably order me some when I visit the US again. I do have a BHK for testing but the model was discontinued but will make some more vids on it anyway.

      Your knives are simply the best. My gen 3 is the perfect multi purpose knife. The handle completely fills my hand. O1 seems oblivious to chipping and this from a guy who cleaved a nearly tennis ball sized rock in half with an Ontario sp53. Minimal edge damage. Next gen or genesis are next knife I'll buy. BTW, my ferro rods hide from the gen3.

    Thanks for video. I've been a fan for a while. With all of the knives that you and the other RUclipsrs in the buschcraft community get to review and test; I wondered which one, if any, you really had a preference for. They are all great knives without a doubt and it is truly a personal preference type of thing. I've been looking at the Habilis line of knives and have been focusing on the Trapper model but that Blackfeather Woodsman is way too nice not to consider. Maybe both??? Knives seem to be like Lay's Potato Chips, you can't have just one.

    The whole "tactical" thing has become so overblown, imo. If you take a step back from all the silly preconceptions of what "tactical" has come to mean in the civilian, outdoor world, then the most "tactical" thing one can do is choose the best tool for the job. In that sense, a good woods knife is the most "tactical" decision one can make for going in the woods. At the end of the day, we bushcrafting, camping and bumming around - not being air-dropped into Baghdad.

    Thanks as always, Joe - great job. A two part question if you don't mind. A bit ago you a provided a rave review for the JX6; as a "companion" knife, is the the reason for its not being included here that is just a different category? I ask as I currently carry a Habilis Bushtool whose handle I modified a bit, but need a finer blade to supplement. I like what you say here and in dedicated view about the FeatherStick, but don't want (well, can't justify/get away with) 3 high end I knives. Application is camp during expedition kayak, thus the big Habilis in lieu of hatcher or (drool) small forest ax. Great channel, Joe.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 лет назад

      Scott Toner that is it in part. but the whole crux of this video are the blades I reach for the most right now. That answer is different as time goes by. it also differs by what I feel needs to be recognized in public. I own many many knives. As I test them, my commonly reached for changes. Folks are taking this as a favorites list and that is not the case at all. the jx6 is a spectacular blade and I highly recommend it.

  • @paulie4x1

    Say Heah Joe, Only as a friend correcting a friend and no criticism . But it's regardless, and not irregardless infact irregarless is not a word and you won't find it in a dictionary. Anyhow, I always said a good designed military/tactical knife will work in survival which will work as a good bush craft knife. For instance, I teamed my Fox Hitam Golok with a Steel Will Darkangel and my Seal Pup Elite TiNi with my Condor Wilderness Tool or my Recon Tanto with my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet or my MK-1 with my Ka-Bar, I just sharpen my Ka-Bar high from the top of the Blood Groove. So yeah, I really don't put alot of thought whether a knife is tactical or not, I look for what steel it's made from and that the apex can be reprofiled thinner. like my modified Rodent 6, I had it thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it liok's like a Ratmandu on steroid's, Infact it's defenetly one of my Fav. 6" blades same as my A-1. I truly enjoy your video's, Job we'll done, Oh, I also got my Fox Parang Bushcraft Jungle Knife that I got as a One Tool Option, a great knife, It can also be used as a Military/Tactical Knife. and the M-9 Bayonet was designed to be also used also as a Survival Knife, so there you have it. Again, Thanx You. ,, .

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 7 лет назад +1

    Say Heah Joe, I also just got the Fallkniven H-1 because it's close to my 3V Skookum Bush Tool but in Stainless for my wet and snowy use. It's defenetly a strong knife, Like Mors in one of his book's wrote, A knife should be strong that works wood well a sharp prybar, That's why I like robust knives, Oh and I still have a Blind Horse Bushcrafter, I had the handle flatter so mine now look's like a High Priced Kephart and it's one of my Fav's, I don't like sausage style handles. ,, .

      Bark River Bushcrafter. They have different models and sometimes different steel or spine thickness. Bushcrafter II is larger blade and handle with the same steel and spine thickness. They have Ultralight Bushcrafter in 3 v steel and stainless Elmax steel

    Another great video thanks for your work. I noticed your Genesis is a scandi but in another video you mentioned maybe liking the Genesis flat grind more. I also have seen that there is a Genesis saber grind for sale. Any thoughts on the saber grind vs the other two? I know I am looking at getting a Genesis but can't make up my mind as to which grind. Thanks!

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 лет назад

      Yeah it's a hard decision, no doubt. It's hard to describe to be honest. I did have a flat grind genesis but gave it away on RUclips a ways back. I chose to give the FG away over the scandi simply because the scandi has been with me through a lot of cool and not so cool experiences. As to which grind I prefer, on the surface I think I prefer the FG yet at the same time, if I could only pick 1 grind it would be scandi. So yeah...hard to say. I haven't used the saber on the Genesis. I have the convex and am undecided on it as of yet. But I don't have much time behind it either. All in all, the Genesis is a great knife, regardless of grind. Sorry Nick, I know that wasn't very helpful. Thanks!

    Not a bad video but...
    Did you know *you can survive without a knife* if you know how to use a saw, an axe, or nothing at all?
    *Here IS my point(s)*
    Point A
    Survival is not about the tools you use but the knowledge you have about "how to" survive (skills).
    The percentage is 10% tools help in survival and 90% knowledge of how to survive will save you.
    "The more you know, the less you carry" -- Mors Kochanski.
    Point B
    If you get yourself in *more than one (1) survival situation* as a non-professional (non-military, Sea, Land, mountain rescuer, are a TV Survival expert, etc.)
    in your lifetime to date then *you are a danger to yourself & all those with you,* stay out of the woods & don't go anywhere where there is no 911 coverage.
    *Recap & Conclusion*
    These are more expensive, overly built knives with usually high dollar handles, big top of the line steel blades, & fancy high quality leather sheaths. *Realistically,* a $10 USD Mora will do & the knife that saves your life does not need to be carbon steel (stainless steel works too) or a full-tang.
    *Getting in a survival situation is very rare with the wise* and even if you get into one where you really needed a knife, the strength of a full tang "survival" knife is most often not needed over a regular knife or pocket knife but:
    1. The will to survive &
    2. knowledge of how the get out of the situation
    is much, much more important.
    *EDIT:* Thanks and have a *happy Indepenace Day!* on the 4th of July.
