OI MATE, you might wanna edit your video because the mobile number of old mate os clearly visible for the whole internet to see attached to the side of every crab pot. just a thaught, otherwise he will have every weirdo on the net calling at all hours!!
Cheers from Hawaii. We call those Kona Crabs in the islands and they don't get as big as the ones you caught but they truly are some of the best tasting crab, really good raw too. Aloha and thanks for a great short vid.
Here on the northern California coast, our favorite crabs are Dungeness Crabs (Cancer Magister). We boil them in filtered seawater for about 15 minutes, and then they go into an ice bath like you do, but we don't salt the ice bath.
Can certainly see why they are called Spanners....what a wild looking crab! Would love to try one to compare with Dungeness....I have had LOTS of Asian/European/American crabs...and so far the best are the ones I have at home in Oregon. I definitely think body meat = best meat.
What crabs do you have in Oregon? Since you have tried so many kinds of crab would you think Australian Mudcrabs taste better than Alaskan King crab or is dungeness outstanding and blue crabs are the sweetest? What about Coconut crab🤔 I wish I could try all those crabs at the same time
These crabs are fascinating to see. I have never seen them before. What a great way to catch them. How are they dispatched? They look very different from spider crabs I've seen.
¡Que delicia! Extraordinario. 👍
What's minimum landing size for spanners? Here, in Hawaii, minimum landing size is 4in/10cm. Spanners are known as Kona crabs & can be found in waters >15-20ft or more. Crabs are ono(delicious) when cooked but, personally...i prefer them cut into quarters & marinated in Korean kim-chee/gochujang sauce...WINNAH!...A-L-O-H-A from Hawaii
Lovely clean surfaces I see ther fellas.. old..Sally..minella.. eat your heart out.. and as a cray fisherman off the bottom of South Australia I fully disagree with the cold shock plunge... at the end of cooking.. the best way is to slightly undercooked the crustacean so that it finishes cooking slightly during the cooling process.. they should be hung by the tail and let drip-dry/ cool.. either in fridge or just outside next to cooking area away from flies
You should take the shell off and clean the guts out before you cook them that way the saltwater gets throughout the meat and the meat stays clean oh and get your air compressor out for the claws and legs and something to catch the meat when it comes flying out
I've had all 3 and I'd have to rate the Spanner tastier. Horses for courses. Different taste buds. Preparation variations. Spanner Crab Lasagne for round 2 🦀

Sounds good to me bro 👌

@@nobappin red/rock crabs makes the best crab cakes on our West coast. Imo.
@@Fishingjunkie-y8v might have to get a few and make some , I live right next to the water I might even attempt to catch some
I miss having dungeness. We haven't been able to get it locally in years. Overfished, so the fish monger says. So good!
Not only have I never seen these kind of crabs, but amazed at how they catch them. What keeps them from letting go and falling off the trap?
Yum nice crab your making my mouth water , crab with a cold beer does not get any better than that.
Keep a lookout for the next video on blue swimmers, dribbling salvation
Crab looked absolutely delicious my friend!
Thank you 😋
That’s what we call Kona crab here in Hawaii. Great eating
Bloody awesome mate, never kept the old spanners in the past into em now 👍
If you cook them like Gerry recommends you'll become instantly addicted! Enjoy Ben.
Here in HAWAII we call the KONA CRAB. GOOD FOR EAT RAW or cooked no matter. Good for eat!
Dang, those looked delicious!!
Insane flavour mate!

Mate another awesome video, the crabs looked delicious, how lucky to go out with those guys for a lesson?
Gerry is a master at preparing Prawns & Crabs for the table. Grateful I got to learn, film it and show you guys 🦀
Looks so yummy!
Unusual looking crab
Great video guys they look a lovely full crab to eat
OMG Mel. Next level flavour!
Oh, that looks so good!
Nice catch guys, they kinda remind me of slipper lobsters that we have on Guam.🤙🏾
I'll have to check them out Bryan
Distant cousins?!-lol
Made my mouth watery 🤤❤
Here in Sulu, Philippines we call it Kuracha.
These crabs are fascinating to see. I have never seen them before. What a great way to catch them. How are they dispatched? They look very different from spider crabs I've seen.
They are dispatched by being dropped into boiling water thus killing them from the inside by boiling their lungs. 😂😂
Gerry answers your question at 7.23 in the video Debra.
I drop them into ice slurry, they go to sleep and pass away, as with all my seafood,I treat humanely and kind. Yum yum
Usually, some crabbers toss the crabs into ice-water bath...about 10# ice +7 gallons water
Kona crabs! Best eating crabs
Awesome tip about getting the meat out of the body - trying that out for sure.
I'm with you on that little trick. Changed everything for me.
Wow, I've never seen or heard of these crabs! How expensive are these compared to Dungeoness? How do they compare, taste-wise, to Dungeoness?
Out of all crabs, the blue swimmer is the best, spanners 2nd
Dungenes crab is only West Coast US
@@gerrymcdonnell6006how about the muß crabs in Australia?

Wow, our creator was quit busy making everything incredibly colorful and vibrant.
JESUS christ and is father yes!!
Top marks to God, he made these critters to keep the bottom clean but as a bonus,he made them tasty
These are indeed pretty tasty..
What type and brand of salt do you find best to use ?
Sea Salt 🧂
Awesome good video mate
Like a cross between a lobster and a crab
Thanks for the thumbs up and subbing to my channel legends 🦀
Those some alien looking crabs..
icing them also pulls the meat away from the shell for less sticking
Spot on!
My pots have been sitting in my shed untouched for 2 years hahaha
Time to drag em out 🦀

Is this spanner crab tastier than a mudcrab?
Delicious 👌
100% delish 😋
They need some old bay season

Usually where you find Trawlers.
Are you sure this is from earth I have never seen them before
In Hawaii we call them kona crab
YESSAH! My favorite!
Kona crab poke 👍🏼
bros hair
I want to try some 😢
You can buy them at the fish markets
What kind of crabs are they
Spanner
It would be awesome if it dipping it in butter sauce
Ooh Yum
They just hold onto the trap by themselves? Interesting.
Thier segmented legs are thier downfall, they get "bogged" so to speak
Why does every animal in Australia look like it came from another planet?
Australia has some weird creatures 🏝
In Australia, What doesn't kill you, tastes nice ha ha
I'm sure it's great but Absolutely no way thats better than Dungeness crab
There are hundreds of different crabs. Lots of them sweeter than Dungeness, like Atlantic Blue crabs.
Agreed. Dungeness is naturally buttery with a thicker flake.
You'll never know until you try.
That is the strangest looking crab I’ve ever seen!!! But man what beautiful meat inside!!!
They are a bit weird looking for sure and yep the flavour, OMG
This guy must have high blood pressure with all that salt.
Ha ha yeah f##k the salt reduced diet
You should take the shell off and clean the guts out before you cook them that way the saltwater gets throughout the meat and the meat stays clean oh and get your air compressor out for the claws and legs and something to catch the meat when it comes flying out
What kinda crab 🦀 is that?
Spanner
@@church288 thank you
Ranina ranina
Everything is nice, but that cutting board is not that clean. sorry
As a old saying, we have to eat 7 pounds of dirt every year to stay healthy, why 7 that I don't know, but that what they said.
Yeah they weren't wearing masks either
No they not, neither did I
No need to be sorry Edna. Those crabs were DELICIOUS! Hope you get to try one.. on a very clean cutting board :)
Adds to the flavour
Uhhh no. Spammer crabs aren’t tastier than rock crabs, king crabs or swimming crabs!!
I've had all 3 and I'd have to rate the Spanner tastier. Horses for courses. Different taste buds. Preparation variations. Spanner Crab Lasagne for round 2 🦀
Odd looking
Hahahahahah
Tastiest? Not compared to Dungeness.
Women didn't eat, how selfish you men are.
Gerry's wife loved her feed of crabs. Are we friends again? :)
It was a Tutorial not a Feast
The Jeffery dahmer of crabs 😢
I like to eat them with a serving or fava beans and a nice Kienti, vuh, vuh, vuh lol
Why do people like ice cold seafood?
Tastes better. That's why it's always served on ice.Try a warm oyster
@@mirekcwil7901 I don’t like oysters but I can understand that being eaten cold though
