I think these portraits are fascinating in that they really are the best and most realistic representations of the human image from antiquity. Not even the marbles, bronzes, or mozaics of the Roman and Hellenistic world come close. Hard to believe you can look into the faces of people who died around two millenia ago. Haunting.
