I think one thing displayed here that's extremely underrated about David's singing is how personal, interpretive and sincere his singing is. Especially in his early days. The high notes are phenomenal but mannn he knows how to convey a message. It's a work of art and so beautiful. Bravo!
I dont think they realized just what they got with David. However it did not take long until he was the `home run maker' of so many of their hit songs. The talent David has is stronger now than ever as he continues to blow our minds with his vocal ability and skills of communicating the message of each song he sings. He is the best singer of my time.
In singing along, once you get to the part of the "but the staff of my shepherd would reach out for me" will surely get you choked up if you sing with conviction and whole heartedly mean what you are saying. I love this song, may seem like a song you wouldn't sing in church, but it could be sung in church if you sing it the way David sings it, even he gets a bit choked up singing that part of the song, you can see it in his face and hear it in his voice. Praise Jesus, our Shepherd that always reaches out to us in times of trouble.
David Phelps has the greatest singing voice God ever created! the Gaither vocal band is the Best ever. I have been listening to them for decades and never get enough. I start my day with praise and worship to Jesus with David and the vocal band!
I've loved this song for so long, but today I realized that this version is the epitome of the Gaither Vocal Band's appeal. David's lead is, as usual, perfect, but the combination of Guy, Mark, and Bill is such a blessed harmony. These voices were meant to sing together, and I'm so thankful that they created such a legacy.

Through wild jagged places of life
Sometimes I’ve stumbled and fallen so hard
That the stones cut my soul like a knife
But the staff of my Shepherd would reach out for me
And lift me to cool pastures green
With oil of the spirit anointing my wounds
There I’d rest by the clear healing stream
