1983 WORLD CUP SEMI FINAL INDIA vs ENGLAND - THE DAY KAPIL'S DEVILS KNOCKED OUT THE HOME TEAM

- 1983 Prudential World Cup of Cricket - The 3rd World cup to be staged in England after 1975 and 1979. India are in the semi-final being lead by the charismatic Kapil Dev against all odds and facing the hosts England for a place in the final. India vs England
June 22, 1983. India vs New Zealand SemiFinal 2019. World cup 2019. In a display of clinical efficiency unfancied Indian team - Kapil's Devils outplayed the overconfident England team to reach the final of the Prudential World Cup. Mohinder Amarnath and Kirti Azad suffocated the English batsmen, and Bob Willis’s sensational field-setting at the fag end of the game to ensured a quick getaway for all the players on the field.
The hosts had been in sparkling form, riding the crest of confidence. They had won five of their six group matches - and in the other, New Zealand had squeezed home by two wickets with one ball to spare. Four years ago they had been stopped in the title round by the brilliance of Viv Richards and Collis King. They did not want an encore. The minds were already focused on the final on Saturday, devising tactics to stop the West Indian batsmen and fast bowlers. They just needed to sweep past the unfancied opponents who had already gone way beyond the wildest dreams of their countrymen.
Yes, very few of the most die-hard Indian fans had anticipated a place in the semi-finals. In two previous World Cups, India had won one solitary match - against the lowly East Africans, way back in 1975. However, during the course of the past two weeks had started to believe in the impossible. They had learnt not to give up.
England 213 in 60 overs (Kapil Dev 3 for 35) lost to India 217 for 4 in 54.4 overs (Mohinder Amarnath 46, Yashpal Sharma 61, Sandeep Patil 51*) by 6 wickets with 32 balls to spare.
Man of the Match: Mohinder Amarnath.

Watched this match live on tv. Still in my memory - M.Amarnath's and Binny taking wickets, Yashpal's batting, the pitch invation. This was a game changing event in Indian Cricket history - the lagaan moment. The '83 finals with WI was the cherry on the top.
Lagaan movie was not based reality 😂

21:00 Umpire holding wicket in an attacking position, after Crowd invasion and then all fielders moving offside. This was never seen before. Followed by Patil's smile when he saw fielders moving offside and Kapil paaji's smile, running back after victory. It is priceless.

Kapil Dev had a belief, grit and determination in this world cup as a captain. Salute to all Indian players who made 1983 world cup win possible !!

A gem of sportsmanships.....
See how Tony Randall caught the ball but disclaimed that was a catch. Salute. A true gentleman
More importantly no harse celebration.
It's the real hero from nowhere with no backing and pure passion and spirit from these players.... Love for cricket from the captain Kapil Dev .. True gem
Yes. I distinctly remember the headlines in the Hindu after this match - "India tames the lion in its den" England was super strong but the way amarnath and kirti azad choked england between 25 and end of innings was unbelievable.
Then India batted like champs esp Sandip Patil..ah those days👍👍👍
In ssoW
Exactly that was the headline, I do remember
nostalgia sucks
Good comment. I was amazed that by 25th over england had 100 but by over 36 only 133. This must mean good tight bowling by india
Sharmas shot at 17.45 is very modern
Can’t get tired of watching this and the finals - Classic - vintage cricket - no fancy hype - players in baggies and played in the perfect spirit! This Indian team changed the face of cricket in India for ever!!! 👏👏👏
I have attached my resume for your reference and hope to hear from you soon

Gentleman's game as they called it then.
It's called Anti-Ponting.

@@artram1655 not really as one bowler was accused of using grease. eng have had their own controversies over the years.
aussies are quite fair barring that incident. why would they do it anyway, it was uncalled for. aussies never allow a doosra as it cant be bowled without chucking!
pak have had their issues.
all nations have been acccused of extremely biased umpiring barring english( even they have been but not that rampant)
actually india never really had any incident if i recall. a biased umpiring but umpire has sided with opponents hating their own( tie test, preparing pitches to oppose authorities-2004 and 2012 trips)
only once tendulkar was pictured picking up the seam and bhajjis racial abuse.
but those days picking seam was quite normal unless you did not scratch on it. it is just that cameras were not there( ramiz raja said they used bottle caps to scratch the seam). indians deliberately let the ball roll on the ground or through on the ground to scratch it up.
I always threw the ball in the air. i hated it to pitch on the ground. scratched ball speed is terribly slow( if you played on mats)
so nobody is really a saint. but nice to see him denying the catch if he is not clear in his mind. it is impossible to tell from such a far angle.
Brilliant. Wow...Pure cricket...no aggression..no wild celebrations...pure sportsman spirit, genuine umpiring..no sledging...respect for each other...Those were the days.....
But crowd 😂 just opposite
Because we see only positives!
The Indian team was a reflection of its captain. Kapil Dev was a gentleman.

1983 world cup is the rise of Indian cricket and born in this generation i didn't knew the full story of each player and each match of the tournament but i just watch "83 movie" and it brought a lot respect for this team for me💞
It was 1983 WC, India win over West Indies in Final, which began the downfall of The Giants of cricket, West Indies and never recovered from the Shock defeat till date.

1983 was the crucial world cup which laid the future of Indian cricket to a gigantic level that it's having now. India winning 2011 world cup never had as much legacy as 1983 has. Last ball logic is awesome. All filders on off not to save a single, but so that they can get to the pavillion faster ( it was on off side). Yashpal Sharma and Mohinder Amarnath won us this World Cup.
Mohinder Amarnath was an excellent swing bowler who took crucial wickets at crucial stages and scored high quality runs as a middle order batsman saving his team.
Yashpal Sharma was an excellent player against fast bowling and he was a very attacking batsman who dared to play pull shots and hook shots against the fast bowlers.
He was an underrated batsman.
So this World Cup belonged to Mohinder Amarnath (allround performance), Yashpal Sharma (semifinal knock which took us to the finals), Kapil Dev (175*) & others like Madan Lal, Roger Binny (crucial breakthroughs).
Balwinder Singh Sandhu was remembered for his dismissal of dangerous Gordon Greenidge in the finals🙂
But again, it was Mohinder Amarnath in the finals..... 👏👏👏👏
Mohinder Amarnath was a product of Nepotism (son of Lala Amarnath), but still Mohinder Amarnath proved it wrong by giving outstanding performances.
Mohinder Amarnath had some issues with the selection committee and he was knocked out of the team.
Mohinder Amarnath famously termed the BCCI selectors as "Bunch of Jokers" after he was dropped from the team.
Mohinder Amarnath was a genuine alrounder India has ever produced as he was technically a much better batsman than Kapil Dev.
Mohinder Amarnath was an excellent player of hook shots.
India could never produce a genuine alrounder like Mohinder Amarnath again till date (match winning medium pacer/match winning batsman).
