Hello, Jimothy. I have never touched this metagame but I have nonetheless been thrown in a moral panic over the ban of this Pokémon I didn't care about just a few minutes ago. This Pokémon does not deserve to be banned from what I gleaned in this 8 minute video, which counts for far more than what experts of the format know. I would like to say that Smogon are Whiny Babies and they should simply adapt. Thank you.

As someone who has never played Gen 5 OU, I believe it's a clear failure of the council that it wasn't banned earlier. It overcentralized the meta game too much, countering staples such as Arbok, Toxicroak, and Average Tusks, making team building and battles just a game of your Reuniclus set. Or something like that, I just need to be outraged to feel included.

@@ethangilworth7891 i remember when they decided to unban Excadrill with the restriction of not using Sand Rush on sand… well people used it on rain to beat sand and the ability was banned as a whole later… the geniuses said Excadrill isn’t broken but sand rush is, so let’s bring it down, limit it to check something broken and we hate Jellicent If something is broken, ban it, not bring something down from Ubers with a limitation. I was like, what next? Lando-I back without Sheer Force and limit it to not allowing it to be used on sand teams? REUNICLUS FANS UNITE!! Reuniclus was my favorite before I got into competitive in Gen 6. I follow it through the tiers, viable or not, and that’s why I’m an RU player now.
The phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is surprisingly relevant here as Reuniclus actually has 2 apples, one at each hand. Gen 5 OU has had an influx of doctors lately and they fear Reuniclus' apples, and would rather see the fruity boy banned than adjust appropriately.
As someone who played Gen 5 OU years ago while it was current, Reuniclus was probably my favorite mon to throw on teams just because of how utterly indestructible it was in the right circumstances. It got to the point where a lot of the people I regularly played against started running para sets specifically for Reuniclus as those were their best bets against killing it. Toxic orb became my go-to item on him just because of how frustrating it was losing against para in those odd circumstances that it mattered, lol...
With all due respect, I do not believe Magcargo has sufficiently justified its place on the Horse Council. I do agree that Magcargo is deserving of respect and authourity, but it is crucial that we do not put the 'Carg before the Horses, for Magcargo's bid to Horse Council membership, in my humble opinion, is horse feathers, opposes the interest of said Council, and may even be considered a Trojan horse. Magcargo's place on the Council is primarily based on the argument that since it can learn High Horsepower, it therefore has to right to be considered a horse. This argument is not, however, unique - several Pokemon can claim to be horses under such a definition. Were news of this controversy to spread to the wider population, the Council may soon find itself stampeded by dark horses seeking membership under the same principle. By that point, the old horses of the Council would be corralled by the new herd, and any further action would be shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. The Horse Council Civil War has already proven to us that Magcargo's admission has been detrimental to the Council as it stands, and the issue at hand is far larger than Magcargo. The future of the Horse Council is at stake, and it is imperative that we do not back the wrong horse.
In the dex it states that the liquid would make you wiser but would also simultaneously kill you due to being highly toxic. In the real world the liquid would be cytoplasm and it would basically taste like nothing because it's just some gel that can be found within cells

While I don't play competitive Pokémon myself, I am glad that the Gen 5 council is willing to keep trying things to see if they can get the meta in a stable place. You're right that while everyone wanted Cloyster gone, Reuniclus is a bit less obvious of a ban, so being able to democratically vote on it in a suspect test makes a lot of sense. This way, regardless of what happens, at least it was agreed upon with a majority vote. I've always found gen 5's high power level amusing, and I do agree that gen 9 will probably settle first. It feels like contrary to smogon's reputation of hating fun, they really are trying to make sure the actions they take are reasonable and are good for the health of the gen 9 meta. While they are banning a lot, well, a lot just happens to have been broken this gen, so it makes sense. And even still, they are still preserving some otherwise controversial things like Kingambit, Gholdengo, and terastellization as a whole, indicating their willingness to at least keep things around if they think the meta will adapt around it. Time will tell if the meta can actually adapt of course, but it does indicate that they are not at all just "banning everything," and really want to give everything a chance. I respect the council a lot for this approach. I think that will work just fine for gen 9, as the dlc definitely contributed to a lot of the instability of the meta. Getting a bunch of new Pokémon to play with partway through the generation will do that to you. But yeah, gen 5 was just kinda like that for over a decade with no external additions and it's still volatile, indicating that the generation itself is just inherently more chaotic. I wish the gen 5 council and its players good luck figuring out what to do about it, because their work is certainly cut out for them.
@@TheKastellan Gen 5 introduced gems. Gems were banned. Gen 5 used to be called the weather wars. Weathers were banned. Half the mons were banned. Frankly, it's not really a meta anymore. They're trying to make gen 4 in gen 5.
I like the idea of being creative and either coming up with a specific moveset with one of the pokemon in that specific tier list or finding a poke from a lower tier that could be surprisingly effective against it.
I think the old gens shouldn't be completely frozen. Maybe there should be some action taken, I dunno, once a year or so to keep usage stats current and see if there are any problems that need addressing
The onyl thing I know about gen 5 OU is that in every other FSG video the viability of the pokemon in question is stated to be flipped on its head in gen 5 specifically. Lots of pokemon that are strong before and after gen 5 suck in it and vice versa. Truly a wild metagame
They will ban every Pokémon before realising that Latios is the most easy ban since it puts way too much pressure on team building and that Latias is right there to keep the metagame stable. Latios is arguably the biggest unabler of broken strategy on every archetype its used, while being extremely hard to answer itself. I'm not saying that banning Latios will suddenly solve every balancing issue in the metagame but I feel like it will be impossible to have a balanced metagame with such an offensive presence in the tier. I feel like taking action against spyspam before banning latios is like banning espeon before banning baton pass.
@@yeet8036 Why though ? I always hear the argument that Latios keeps them in check, but so does Latias and it does it better. The reality is that Latios is so omnipresent in the meta that people can't think of gen 5 without it. The fact that Latios is the only Pokémon with a perfect replacement already present in OU makes it the perfect ban target, since there is no risk of having an unnecessary domino effect. And yes, I'd rather take a meta with 60% of team running Latias than a meta where everything is broken because we decided that Latios will be the last Pokémon being banned and that it will probably get banned in 2030 after cloyster, Reuniclus, Volcarona, Alakazam, Thunderus, Excadrill, Keldeo, ... The truth is that the player base still doesn't want to believe that no matter what Latios will be gone, and try to delay its ban, and with it, any chance of seeing a stable meta soon. Latios is the backbone of most offensive teams, and therefore offensive threats in BW.
Also starting with Reuniclus just leaves the door open for another psyspam mon to take its place. The reality is that Reuniclus is almost always paired with Latios in the current meta and that it's reliant on it to do the job. Reuniclus is a problem in like 1 team, with Latios being a problem in almost half the teams in the current meta. Its absence will also make Zam psy-spam more powerful, since there won't be the opportunity cost of not runing shadow ball to beat it, letting Zam free to prepare for more threats.
Surely no one in the whole Gen 5 community has thought of that, and you are the first one to realise it... Go to the forums to let them know, they probably will be happy to hear.
I think it comes down to a matter of bureaucracy, sadly. Put it this way: banning Reuniclus, yes will have a big impact on the metagame. However, banning Latios would COMPLETELY change the metagame. Would that be a bad thing? Probably not, however, higher ups at Smogon don't want to alienate the existing playerbase by creating an unrecognisable metagame. I think Latios IS banworthy, but to be fair, Reun would likely still be as well, even in Latios's absence
I think Reuniclus should probably be banned. It really does constrain building quite a bit IMO, and Alakazam and Clefable feel much easier to handle (to advocate against a potential Magic Guard ban like some have said). Either way I'm just glad they're testing it. I will say the timing does kind of suck though lmao because it's during BW Cup for Smogon Classic and I'm struggling to decide whether to try to build around it and learn/prep for a metagame with Reuniclus or not.
Did we ever suspect test team preview in gen 3 ou? I always forget, was it Stadium? Colosseum? The one game without player 1 priority. It was a thing way before gen 5.

It's pretty funny how a slow mon ended up being broken in a fast meta. I remember there was a time in which Skarmory was viable basically to phase mons like Reuniclus (or at least some sets from it), but it's been years since that, and now I doubt it would work anymore.
So all meta games develop past their time of being current. I think it’s just kinda dumb how it’s broken now in a 10 year old plus generation. Who’s to say given enough time a resolution can be found to help this. It just seems like it’s not the issue of reuniclus being broken but rather it’s just the center of the meta right now and people are bored so they want to ban it to switch it up and make it more fun.

as someone with little knowledge of competitive pokémon and little chances to play the games (only lightly playing Gold and lost my almost-beaten Moon card to both a hacked trade and general losing it), only knowing the series because i love a lot of the designs (not just the cute ones, I can recognize cool af), i will not stand for this supression of my lil' single-celled cutie.
i don't have enough experience with gen 5 to be comfortable deciding whether reuiniclus should go, but in my experience with the metagame "the problem" is actually 4 problems: dragons, psy spam, rain and miscellaneous threats (mainly volc now that cloyster is gone). the power level of offensive mons is so insane compared to the defensive mons that you're forced to use a lot of very specific checks, and even if you're great into 3 of the 4 categories that means you get destroyed 25% of the time. as a bare minimum you need a sturdy switch in to draco, outrage, psychic, rain boosted surf and volcarona (along with general physical and special walls), and while you can just about cover those with 2 or 3 mons the more you try to compress those defensive roles the more likely it is you get overwhelmed. ttar can't handle latios, zam and reuniclus, no steel type can switch into both outrage and draco repeatedly, and sturdy water switch ins (like gastrodon, jellicent) get destroyed by the right coverage or other rain sweepers like thunderus. you're trying to build a team that can simultaneously wall 3 powerful psychic types with focus blast or surf, like 10 different dragons with physical and special moves, half a dex full of rain sweepers and a bunch of crazy setup mons, and that just isn't doable so you constantly get into awful matchups. none of these individual pokemon are problematic on their own, there's just too many of them. unless we ban half the ou tier the only way i see gen 5 settling down is if we ban hazards, offensive items (band, specs and life orb), or maybe outrage and draco, that would take enough pressure off of defensive cores to let them function. if i had to choose 1 mon to ban though i'd choose latios, it's the most powerful mon by far and it supports all of the other problem mons offensively, so if it got banned i think it might take enough pressure off to fix things, then latias could step up to fill its defensive role so we wouldn't lose anything

Weavile also isn’t very good in gen 5, rocks weak, sand vulnerable, doesn’t threaten a whole lot, and reun can just switch out of weavile into tyranitar/skarmory/ excadrill/ rotom wash lol
What makes Gen 5 OU so hard to balance? They've gotten rid of gems, Swift Swim, and sleep. Yet even weatherless teams can still be broken. Is it just because of the overall balance of the metagame leans offensively, or is there something I'm missing?
From what I can gather, it seems like when Gen 5 was current, its leadership operated on a "broken checks broken" sort of philosophy, and only really banned stuff that was so broken that it made the tier unplayable. Also lots of failed experiments, like trying to ban Swift Swim in conjunction with rain instead of banning it outright. Now the modern playerbase wants to ban all the broken stuff that got left behind, but the problem is that people can't agree on which bans should be prioritized, or if banning one thing would make another thing even more broken.

Hey Jim. I’m wondering what you mean when you say gen 5 ou is a high power level metagame. Aren’t generations 6 and 7 higher power level, with the introduction of megas and z moves? Or do you mean that generation 5 is a higher power level jump as compared to gen 4, and that all generations since gen 1 have increased in power level?
I know that Smogon doesn't like complex bans, but would Reuniclus be as oppressive if it wasn't allowed to use Magic Guard and instead had to run either of its two other abilities?

As someone who played Gen 5 OU years ago while it was current, Reuniclus was probably my favorite mon to throw on teams just because of how utterly indestructible it was in the right circumstances. It got to the point where a lot of the people I regularly played against started running para sets specifically for Reuniclus as those were their best bets against killing it. Toxic orb became my go-to item on him just because of how frustrating it was losing against para in those odd circumstances that it mattered, lol...

With all due respect, I do not believe Magcargo has sufficiently justified its place on the Horse Council. I do agree that Magcargo is deserving of respect and authourity, but it is crucial that we do not put the 'Carg before the Horses, for Magcargo's bid to Horse Council membership, in my humble opinion, is horse feathers, opposes the interest of said Council, and may even be considered a Trojan horse.
Magcargo's place on the Council is primarily based on the argument that since it can learn High Horsepower, it therefore has to right to be considered a horse. This argument is not, however, unique - several Pokemon can claim to be horses under such a definition. Were news of this controversy to spread to the wider population, the Council may soon find itself stampeded by dark horses seeking membership under the same principle. By that point, the old horses of the Council would be corralled by the new herd, and any further action would be shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.
The Horse Council Civil War has already proven to us that Magcargo's admission has been detrimental to the Council as it stands, and the issue at hand is far larger than Magcargo. The future of the Horse Council is at stake, and it is imperative that we do not back the wrong horse.

While I don't play competitive Pokémon myself, I am glad that the Gen 5 council is willing to keep trying things to see if they can get the meta in a stable place. You're right that while everyone wanted Cloyster gone, Reuniclus is a bit less obvious of a ban, so being able to democratically vote on it in a suspect test makes a lot of sense. This way, regardless of what happens, at least it was agreed upon with a majority vote.
I've always found gen 5's high power level amusing, and I do agree that gen 9 will probably settle first. It feels like contrary to smogon's reputation of hating fun, they really are trying to make sure the actions they take are reasonable and are good for the health of the gen 9 meta. While they are banning a lot, well, a lot just happens to have been broken this gen, so it makes sense. And even still, they are still preserving some otherwise controversial things like Kingambit, Gholdengo, and terastellization as a whole, indicating their willingness to at least keep things around if they think the meta will adapt around it. Time will tell if the meta can actually adapt of course, but it does indicate that they are not at all just "banning everything," and really want to give everything a chance. I respect the council a lot for this approach.
I think that will work just fine for gen 9, as the dlc definitely contributed to a lot of the instability of the meta. Getting a bunch of new Pokémon to play with partway through the generation will do that to you. But yeah, gen 5 was just kinda like that for over a decade with no external additions and it's still volatile, indicating that the generation itself is just inherently more chaotic. I wish the gen 5 council and its players good luck figuring out what to do about it, because their work is certainly cut out for them.

I like the idea of being creative and either coming up with a specific moveset with one of the pokemon in that specific tier list or finding a poke from a lower tier that could be surprisingly effective against it.
I think the old gens shouldn't be completely frozen. Maybe there should be some action taken, I dunno, once a year or so to keep usage stats current and see if there are any problems that need addressing

The onyl thing I know about gen 5 OU is that in every other FSG video the viability of the pokemon in question is stated to be flipped on its head in gen 5 specifically. Lots of pokemon that are strong before and after gen 5 suck in it and vice versa. Truly a wild metagame

They will ban every Pokémon before realising that Latios is the most easy ban since it puts way too much pressure on team building and that Latias is right there to keep the metagame stable. Latios is arguably the biggest unabler of broken strategy on every archetype its used, while being extremely hard to answer itself.
I'm not saying that banning Latios will suddenly solve every balancing issue in the metagame but I feel like it will be impossible to have a balanced metagame with such an offensive presence in the tier.
I feel like taking action against spyspam before banning latios is like banning espeon before banning baton pass.

The reality is that Latios is so omnipresent in the meta that people can't think of gen 5 without it. The fact that Latios is the only Pokémon with a perfect replacement already present in OU makes it the perfect ban target, since there is no risk of having an unnecessary domino effect. And yes, I'd rather take a meta with 60% of team running Latias than a meta where everything is broken because we decided that Latios will be the last Pokémon being banned and that it will probably get banned in 2030 after cloyster, Reuniclus, Volcarona, Alakazam, Thunderus, Excadrill, Keldeo, ...
The truth is that the player base still doesn't want to believe that no matter what Latios will be gone, and try to delay its ban, and with it, any chance of seeing a stable meta soon. Latios is the backbone of most offensive teams, and therefore offensive threats in BW.
Also starting with Reuniclus just leaves the door open for another psyspam mon to take its place. The reality is that Reuniclus is almost always paired with Latios in the current meta and that it's reliant on it to do the job. Reuniclus is a problem in like 1 team, with Latios being a problem in almost half the teams in the current meta. Its absence will also make Zam psy-spam more powerful, since there won't be the opportunity cost of not runing shadow ball to beat it, letting Zam free to prepare for more threats.
Surely no one in the whole Gen 5 community has thought of that, and you are the first one to realise it... Go to the forums to let them know, they probably will be happy to hear.
I think it comes down to a matter of bureaucracy, sadly. Put it this way: banning Reuniclus, yes will have a big impact on the metagame. However, banning Latios would COMPLETELY change the metagame. Would that be a bad thing? Probably not, however, higher ups at Smogon don't want to alienate the existing playerbase by creating an unrecognisable metagame. I think Latios IS banworthy, but to be fair, Reun would likely still be as well, even in Latios's absence
I think Reuniclus should probably be banned. It really does constrain building quite a bit IMO, and Alakazam and Clefable feel much easier to handle (to advocate against a potential Magic Guard ban like some have said). Either way I'm just glad they're testing it. I will say the timing does kind of suck though lmao because it's during BW Cup for Smogon Classic and I'm struggling to decide whether to try to build around it and learn/prep for a metagame with Reuniclus or not.

It's pretty funny how a slow mon ended up being broken in a fast meta. I remember there was a time in which Skarmory was viable basically to phase mons like Reuniclus (or at least some sets from it), but it's been years since that, and now I doubt it would work anymore.

So all meta games develop past their time of being current. I think it’s just kinda dumb how it’s broken now in a 10 year old plus generation. Who’s to say given enough time a resolution can be found to help this. It just seems like it’s not the issue of reuniclus being broken but rather it’s just the center of the meta right now and people are bored so they want to ban it to switch it up and make it more fun.

as someone with little knowledge of competitive pokémon and little chances to play the games (only lightly playing Gold and lost my almost-beaten Moon card to both a hacked trade and general losing it), only knowing the series because i love a lot of the designs (not just the cute ones, I can recognize cool af), i will not stand for this supression of my lil' single-celled cutie.

i don't have enough experience with gen 5 to be comfortable deciding whether reuiniclus should go, but in my experience with the metagame "the problem" is actually 4 problems: dragons, psy spam, rain and miscellaneous threats (mainly volc now that cloyster is gone). the power level of offensive mons is so insane compared to the defensive mons that you're forced to use a lot of very specific checks, and even if you're great into 3 of the 4 categories that means you get destroyed 25% of the time. as a bare minimum you need a sturdy switch in to draco, outrage, psychic, rain boosted surf and volcarona (along with general physical and special walls), and while you can just about cover those with 2 or 3 mons the more you try to compress those defensive roles the more likely it is you get overwhelmed. ttar can't handle latios, zam and reuniclus, no steel type can switch into both outrage and draco repeatedly, and sturdy water switch ins (like gastrodon, jellicent) get destroyed by the right coverage or other rain sweepers like thunderus. you're trying to build a team that can simultaneously wall 3 powerful psychic types with focus blast or surf, like 10 different dragons with physical and special moves, half a dex full of rain sweepers and a bunch of crazy setup mons, and that just isn't doable so you constantly get into awful matchups. none of these individual pokemon are problematic on their own, there's just too many of them. unless we ban half the ou tier the only way i see gen 5 settling down is if we ban hazards, offensive items (band, specs and life orb), or maybe outrage and draco, that would take enough pressure off of defensive cores to let them function. if i had to choose 1 mon to ban though i'd choose latios, it's the most powerful mon by far and it supports all of the other problem mons offensively, so if it got banned i think it might take enough pressure off to fix things, then latias could step up to fill its defensive role so we wouldn't lose anything

Weavile also isn’t very good in gen 5, rocks weak, sand vulnerable, doesn’t threaten a whole lot, and reun can just switch out of weavile into tyranitar/skarmory/ excadrill/ rotom wash lol
What makes Gen 5 OU so hard to balance? They've gotten rid of gems, Swift Swim, and sleep. Yet even weatherless teams can still be broken. Is it just because of the overall balance of the metagame leans offensively, or is there something I'm missing?
From what I can gather, it seems like when Gen 5 was current, its leadership operated on a "broken checks broken" sort of philosophy, and only really banned stuff that was so broken that it made the tier unplayable. Also lots of failed experiments, like trying to ban Swift Swim in conjunction with rain instead of banning it outright. Now the modern playerbase wants to ban all the broken stuff that got left behind, but the problem is that people can't agree on which bans should be prioritized, or if banning one thing would make another thing even more broken.

From what I've seen, Clef usage is starting to go up. It's not Top 5 like in Gen 4, but people are starting to use it
