    Professor Adam, this is a great tutorial and thank you for putting it online. I know it was for your students, yet I found it very helpful. I know 'about' the cloud, but not how to use it properly and I was finding that I was saving things to my hard drive. Hopefully, I will have success. If not, it will be user error. I already pay for Microsoft and get 1T of cloud storage, so I found out by accident that I was not utilizing it like I should. I will look around and see what other videos you had. Your information was very clear, step by step and very informative. I hope this helped your students as well! I just subscribed!

    Great instructional videos - Thanks. When One-Drive is synced with my laptop, does it create a COPY or a LINK to the file in the CLOUD? A LINK doesn't use the space whereas the COPY uses space on the Laptop. But a COPY let's me work with the file off-line. If I do, does it update the CLOUD COPY when I reconnect to the internet?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 года назад

      Hi Kumar,
      No, your cloud files will be stored on Microsoft's servers. The files stored on OneDrive will not take up any storage on your computer, unless you download and save them to your hard drive. I hope this helps you out.

    thanks for the video, a quick question that do you maybe know why after i click sync, folder and sub folder structure is visible in file explorer, but when i go to check they are all empty folder? the files were not there, they look like empty folders, not synced. Is this because that the number of all items in this synced folder is >5000 ? not sure how to solve this

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 года назад

      Hi,
      If the file contents are larger than the allowed storage space (5GB), then it might not be syncing correctly. Try syncing another OneDrive account that has less files and see if that works. If it does, transfer files that you need to that account without exceeding the file size limit.

    Hi, Adam I am running .Win10 and have a subscription to Office365 Home Edition. Do I have two instances of OneDrive?
    Can OneDrive be used like Mozy or Carbonite to automatically backup a predefined backup set to the cloud? My sub gives me 1 T of storage space per user at no additional charge. I’m thinking it can replace my Mozy.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 лет назад

      Hi Judyln,
      You will not have 2 instances of OneDrive. Your 1T of storage is linked to whichever Microsoft email account that you linked your Office 365 subscription to. You could use OneDrive as your backup, but OneDrive's primary use isn't necessarily backing up data. So if you accidentally delete something or your Microsoft account is hacked, it could mean a loss of important files. It's okay to have multiple backups as long as they're well organized. I hope this is clear, have a nice day.

    Going to give it a try, currently using another online backup but the problem is if one file is added to the backup set, the whole set is done as a full backup instead of incremental. I am very familiar with older software like xcopy, pkware, and when Windows added briefcase all of which would compare and backup only the new or changed files. Since my backup set is 700 gigs in size you can imaging the problem when I add even one file, and the online system I use now has to back up the entire set all over again.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark,
      You're right, full backups can take a very long time, especially if you're backing up 700+ gigs of storage data. Well, since OneDrive only comes with 5GB for free, you might consider using it for a while to see if you like it, just backing up certain files as you go. OneDrive does offer a premium subscription, I don't know the details or how much it costs, but it offers 1TB of cloud storage. Although the initial syncing process will take a long time, from that point forward, it should load and sync as soon as your computer starts. Not sure if this is an option for you, but it may solve your problems with storage backup times. Have a nice day and thanks for the comment.

      So I been experimenting with One Drive and it is phenomenally, infinitely easier than the current backup party I use, once that subscription runs out, one drive is a bit more but well worth it, if I can get my VSDC capture to work, will have to to a vid on it.

    Request - with Sync on office365 the default location of files in on onedrive and it downloads content/changes to my desktop files. Or, the files on onedrive control my desktop files. I would prefer having the default file location on my desktop and having copies and changes made on onedrive as a backup. I don't think sync allows that yes? AutoSave constantly saves files in the background which is good but does allow my preferred file management scheme? If so how do you set it up and if not, is there another solution out there that offers that capability?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 лет назад

      Hey How To Do Show,
      To be honest I am not so sure on this one. I don't use Office 365 (I use 2016) on any of my devices, so this one is something I don't have much experience in. I also disable the autosave feature on my version of Office so I am mostly unfamiliar with the process. I was able to find some information on the Microsoft website that may help you out, and I'll link it below. My guess is that you'd have to change your sync options, so hopefully this works:

    Great job!
    However, I am eternally confused with syncing files. I've gotten into so much trouble losing folders and files when deleting to start fresh. I AM USING THE CLOUD PRIMARILY FOR A BACKUP OF MY PERSONAL FOLDERS. If I continue using the folders and files seen on my desktop, they are NOT the same folders that are synced in my (onedrive) folder. I don't know of a way to copy my "synced" desktop folders into my regular desktop folder, so that they will be accessed and visible on my desktop - How do I move or copy my synced desktop over to my "real" desktop, so that they could be accessed and changed FROM MY DESKTOP. Or, do I have to only go into my (onedrive or dropbox) folder to make additions and changes to be current and synced up automatically? Thanks for your attention. Rob Oh yeah, could I download the folder and then somehow get that downloaded synced folder to appear on the desktop?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 лет назад

      Hi Robert,
      Thank you for watching my video and for the comment. I actually made a video that covers specifically syncing a OneDrive account to your PC. You may be having syncing issues due to other accounts being previously synced to your PC. The benefit of syncing your OneDrive account to your Windows 10 device is that you can easily access all of the files and folder from File Explorer, rather than the OneDrive Web App. Check out this video and let me know if it was helpful for you or if you still have more issues. Have a nice day.

      Hi Alicia,
      Sure, you can right-click on the cloud icon in the bottom right of your taskbar. That'll open your OneDrive options. Select Pause Syncing, and you can choose the amount of time that you want to stop syncing. Alternatively, you can also sign-out of OneDrive and use OneDrive.com to manage all of your syncing. I hope this is helpful for you.

    Regarding the sync feature, what if you have more than 5.5 GB worth of stuff? My Documents folder has quite a bit more than 5.5 GB and the first time I got OneDrive working it gave me an error message saying the drive was full. I don't want to buy more space from Microsoft (partly because I don't need 1 TB or anywhere near it and I don't want to pay a subscription fee either). So what is the best way to work with OneDrive when your files exceed 5.5 GB? Thanks!

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Douglasskinner,
      You could create multiple accounts and store the files between those accounts if you want to use OneDrive. I think Google Drive offers 15GB for free, so if you're fine with Google's platform, they offer 3 times the space. I hope this helps you out.

    @Chris-mr8qm 7 лет назад +1

    Hey, thanks for the video. There is one thing that I am not sure I understand with the sync option in the explorer, the file is saved on the Onedrive cloud but is it saved as well in the computer??? I cant figure this out...
    The reason is that I do not want to use drive as backup but extra storage and use the exploser just for better access than the web browser.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  7 лет назад

      Hey Christopher,
      Thank you for watching. When you save something in File Explorer, you can choose the OneDrive option. If it is saved on your OneDrive, it is not saved on your computer. To save it on your computers long-term memory, you'd need to save it to the hard drive, which is listed under 'This PC' in File Explorer.
      I use OneDrive for the same thing, as an access point rather than backup. Anything that you save to OneDrive on File Explorer can be accessed immediately at OneDrive.com from any device. Hope this helps explain it.

      Yeah the sync process on OneDrive is automatic and easy to understand. The cloud in the taskbar (Windows 10) allows you to sign in to OneDrive and sync your files to File Explorer. I've found that sync time is usually very short, I expect that you'll like it. Let me know.

      You're going to have to change your sync settings within Microsoft Office. This website should help you adjust the sync away from your C drive and on to your E drive. You should just have to change the location once and it should work from there on out.

    I have a very specific One Drive issue, and it isn't one that I can find a solution for online.
    I bought a new computer because my old one is practically dead at this point, and I set it up using a different (newer) Microsoft account. The trouble is that the new computer didn't give me as much One Drive space as I had on the old computer/account. Is there a way to transfer that space to my new computer since it is technically mine anyway? I need the space because I am trying to move my files from the old one to the new one. It isn't working because not enough space.
    I even tried setting up another user on the computer using the old account, and the one drive didn't carry over to the new computer. This is annoying.

      It might depend on what the file size is. With video files, it's likely that the size is too large to fit within the free storage on your OneDrive account. Hopefully this helps you out.

      Hi Elizabeth,
      You can only open your current documents if you transfer them to the new computer. This can be done using OneDrive, assuming you have less than 5GB of data on your current computer. The safest way to do all of this would be an external hard drive. I hope this helps you out.

      Hi Joyce,
      Using OneDrive will not have any effect on your iCloud account. You can use multiple types of cloud storage for different purposes. OneDrive and iCloud are essentially just 2 different types of cloud storage services. This video may help explain a little bit more about how the cloud works. Let me know if you have any other questions, I hope this helps:

    Is it possible to sync one of my regular library files to onedrive without having to create a new folder in onedrive and dragging files over? Google drive has the option to do this but I do not want to install Google drive on the other PCs.

      Hi Bruce,
      I am sorry about that, I have reset the link so hopefully the new one works. Yes it is possible. Once you sync OneDrive to Windows 10 (I recommend this for your home computer only), then you will see a OneDrive icon in your File Explorer tab. Then you can copy and paste any folder/file into your OneDrive folder and it'll sync any time you use the files. This works better than Google Drive because you don't need to use a web app. I hope this helps you.

Remember OneDrive only comes with 5GB of free storage, so if Hard Drive space is a problem, you'll probably need OneDrive premium. I hope this helps out.

    I'm curious: Have you ever tried using Google Drive? I have tried it several times because I can't seem to have any control over what it's doing. It seems to upload so slowly, and there is no count of any files or folders available, so I can never tell if all files have uploaded into the folder(s). It is so unreliable! Is it just me? Is it actually really easy to use and very reliable and fast?

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  4 года назад +1

      Hi Robert,
      Yes, I use Google Drive occasionally, but not as my primary cloud provider. Personally, I don’t like using Web Browsers for file management because then you have to log in every single time you want to use the cloud. I purposely sync all of my OneDrive files to File Explorer so I don’t have to use OneDrive.com for convenience. OneDrive also organizes files on the web browser similar to File Explorer. Navigation in Google Drive doesn’t feel as familiar to me, but I don’t think it’s necessarily slower or less reliable. I think it more depends on what user interface you prefer, but both are reliable.

    • @ProfessorAdamMorgan
      @ProfessorAdamMorgan  6 лет назад

      Hi XL Worlds,
      No, I mostly just cover what OneDrive is and how to sync it with Windows 10 in this video. Basically, you have 2 options to increase storage on OneDrive. Remember, you start off with 5GB of free storage:
      1. You can earn 0.5 GB for every person you refer to OneDrive. For Example, I earn 0.5GB for every person who clicks the link in my description, only thing is that it is capped at 15 GBs, so I'm no longer allowed to earn GB.
      2. You can purchase a OneDrive Plan from Microsoft. $2/month gets you 50GB. $7/month gets you 1TB of storage with Microsoft Office. $99/year gets you 5TB of storage and Microsoft Office.
      I hope this clears up your question. Thanks for the comment.

      Hi Chela,
      So when you save the document to the cloud, you will need to access the cloud in order to update and resave that document. If you want a copy on your PC, you will need to create a copy and put it there. If you want to access the cloud file easily from File Explorer, I recommend syncing your OneDrive to your PC File Explorer. If you can do this, you'll have no problem easily copying the file each day to your PC if you want a backup. I made a video on this, I hope it helps you:

      Hi,
      Occasionally OneDrive will lock you out of your account if something unexpected happens on your account. In this case, it was probably when you hit the back button. If you have another email address, you should just try to set it up using that email address until they lock up the old one. The link in the description should work fine, I've seen a lot of other people have used it. You will get an extra half gig for using it. If the half gig isn't important to you, you should be able to create a new account directly from Onedrive.com

      I haven't seen an error message like that before. Usually if you want to see your OneDrive account from your File Explorer, you just have to click the cloud icon on the right side of the taskbar. Once you do that, it should prompt you to sign in. Once signed in, you should see it in your file explorer. Not sure why it's asking you to go to account.live.com but typically all account fixes can be done directly at onedrive.com

      You're required to use a Microsoft Account to use OneDrive. If you
      already have a @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com*email address,
      or an Xbox Live or Skype account, you already have a Microsoft account,
      and you can use that info to sign in.
      If you don't have a Microsoft account, do the following:
      Visit OneDrive.com using your web browser.
      Click the Sign up for free button.
      Click the Create a Microsoft account button.
      Create a new email address and password for the new account.
