  • This is "The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird," the way I heard it in my head when I first read the lyrics to this song in the novel.
    First and foremost:
I love Rachel Zegler's version, but still, I was surprised at how differently they interpreted it. It has a whole different mood than what it sounded like in my imagination. For me, these words were immensely powerful. They tell the story of Lucy Gray's time in the Hunger Games and her relationship with Coriolanus Snow. Her ballad itself serves as a symbol of resistance and individuality in the face of the oppressive Capitol regime, so my immediate take on it was obviously much darker than the version used in the movie. I tried to capture the essence of Lucy Gray's spirit and the challenges she faces in the brutal arena while putting a musical dress around it that would still make sense in the Hunger Games universe.
Please understand that I don't see this as a competition. This is merely a different take on it, which has been in my head for almost three years now, and which I liked so much that I didn't want to just shelve it and forget about it.
Please note that I did not write the lyrics, nor do I own the rights to them. The music was inspired by the words written by Suzanne Collins.
A little note concerning my connection to the Hunger Games books and movies:
When composer James Newton Howard went on his first-ever tour to play the music he wrote for so many movies (including The Hunger Games), I was lucky enough to be invited as a guest singer for the Frankfurt, Germany show, to perform "The Hanging Tree" live with him and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and made me love the books and the story even more. This show took place in December 2017, and at this time, I would still perform under the name Hanne Kah.
    These are the lyrics:
When I was a babe I fell down in the holler
When I was a girl I fell into your arms
We fell on hard times and we lost our bright color
You went to the dogs and I lived by my charms
I danced for my dinner, spread kisses like honey
You stole and you gambled and I said you should
We sang for our suppers, we drank up our money
Then one day you left saying I was no good
Well, all right, I’m bad, but then you’re no prize either
All right, I’m bad, but then that’s nothing new
You say you won’t love me, I won’t love you neither
Just let me remind you who I am to you
‘Cause I am the one who looks out when you’re leaping
I am the one who knows how you were brave
And I am the one who heard what you said sleeping
I’ll take that and more when I go to my grave
It’s sooner than later that I’m six feet under
It’s sooner than later that you’ll be alone
So who will you turn to tomorrow, I wonder?
For when the bell rings, lover, you’re on your own
I am the one who you let see you weeping
I know the soul that you struggle to save
Too bad I’m the bet that you lost in the reaping
Now what will you do when I go to my grave
