Happy to see you revisiting it!! The fangame Undertale Yellow has gotten me back into Undertale lately, it's SO good a full length game that took 7 years for the devs to complete, and the OST is incredible! Thanks for reviewing Fallen down :)
If you like Undertale's music then you'll definitely appreciate some of Homestuck's soundtrack as it was also created by Toby Fox! (Edit: He created the music, not Homestuck itself 😅)
When I see you listening to undertale's soundtracks the only thing that comes to my mind is "Man, he's just like Asgore", you have fun in a beautiful way.
One of my favorite tracks as well. I see the two background choir voices as male (Asgore) and female (Toriel), because their stories are connected to the humans who have fallen down. The music, just like their stories are suffocating melancholy that turns into hope and joy.
I showed Fallen Down to my piano professor once. Having never even heard of Undertale before, he compared the song to a carousel that used to be loved but is now old and broken
i heard this song not long after a close family member passed away. I was in highschool at the time and undertale was just becoming big, I broke down and couldnt even stand without help because the emotions i felt were so strong from this. Its truly the best song in the OST in my opinion and a top 5 in all video game music for me personally
I would really love to see you react to the Undertale Musical made by the Man on the Internet Crew. They made such a fantastic job in it and gave every Soundtrack a better understanding in their context. They made me cry enough to say that they made it beautiful
Will you do vocal covers of songs at some point? Hearing your singing over Fallen Down just makes me want a full version honestly, your voice is beautiful.
I love chiptunes in general, but especially in modern music it's only used by conscious choice. It has its own function as an instrument that COULD be replaced by more 'traditional' instruments, but doesn't NEED to be. it holds its own thematic and emotional merits, moreso now that it isn't the only way to have music in games
Marco! I'd love to see your reaction to some of the Madoka Magica OST!! it has some incredible tracks and i'd love to see what you think and/or feel when listening to some of the songs! i feel like you'd be fantastic at analysing the songs
Fallen down reprise is my favorite song from the soundtrack. I learned to play it on piano (I can't play piano) just because it touches something in me that almost no song does.
Something that i really love about the first half of this song is that we are introduced to four voices. The voices that, to me, represent the four primary characters in the story. Chara, Asriel, Toriel, and Asgore. It opens with the two voices dancing alongside one another, representing the two children. Both mirror eachother like siblings. Then, the two deeper voices come in representing the parents. Each pair is similar yet distinct, creating some mild tension and representing how we have these interconnected characters each causing change in ways that reflect their personalities. Then, with the reprise, i feel we get to hear a plethora of different voices that begin to represent the characters that get swept up in this story.
As a man that is suposedly musicaly inclined, I have not used it other than to enjoy music. But near the beginning an instrument leaves song for a little bit making it tell me a story of how you feel alone in the world then when he brings it to the 27 sec mark the "singing" part almost feels like a mother singing to her child informing you its okay and not to cry. Then near the end the song obviously gets more up beat. Idk if you cared but thats my take.
I want to hear you singing more, with the songs of the games Marco! is sooo beautiful, i love it! I deman it!! xD Do ot!! also, another song you might like, since is also has some heartearming, and calming theme, is Stardew Valley! :D
I think the reason the chiptune works so well in this is it's simplicity reminding us of a simpler time in our childhoods, and that serves to elevate this simple but effective track into something much mure resonant than real instruments would be in this case
What I love about the majority of Undertale's OST is using simplicity to the maximum. The chiptune makes it emphasize of the core melody and carries the emotional weight through.
Oh my gosh, I was literally rewatching the Undertale playthrough last week! I actually kept coming back to the last episode afterwards because I loved seeing Marco's great and lovely reaction to this song, it's so heartwarming. Thank you for making this video
Undertales OST is seriously some of the most beautiful, & impressive music that has ever been released for a video game. Especially impressive since this is an indie game, yet its music is on par with the finest in all of gaming
I am of the opinion that music when played in a different key has a different emotional effect. Hearing and playing Undertale and Deltarune for the first time and listening to their soundtracks, I was stunned by the...de-tuning of a lot of these tracks. It opened up a whole world for me and I can't get enough of it.
I hope at some point you could consider visiting Undertale Yellows OST, it’s a fan game that’s quite literally a full game. (And it’s free) it’s a take on a prequel for Undertales story with a bunch of charming new characters that are almost on par with the Undertale cast. Also wanna mention the game took 7 years to be developed! “A mother’s love” has a permanent place on my playlist!
The chiptune vs orchestration thing is, I think, about approachability. An orchestra is dozens or more people all working on...well...concert...with each other. It's big and organised and special. But it's far from intimate with the amount of work that goes into just making it happen. A chiptune feels more intimate because it *feels* like there's less involved. It *could* be one person with a sound device making it all. It's stripped back, smaller and does not feel like a giant organisation was involved in making it. And thus more personal and achievable.
Marcomeatball, so far ive been lovign your insights and reactions to all the songs that you've listened to, and now i have the courage to give my own request. The guilty gear strive community recently got a new character, A.B.A, with an amazing theme called "symphony". I think youd love it, considering your reaction to all the other character's themes. Im begging you man. Would love some more guilty gear strive content. Dont have to, but please.
@@ranid0072no it’s not? There’s 2 remix’s of the main themes in the entire game and they’re at the start of the game and the bad ending of the end of the game.
This was the first (and only) piece I learned to play in the piano! I mean... "learn to play" is a strong word, as I just pressed the notes in the correct sequence, but nonetheless, it was a nice experience!
Through it all, many years later, the Undertale song I keep coming back to over and over more than any others is still 'Undertale'. It feels like a story being told to you at a campfire,a story of hope and desolation, of determination and woe. Just a beautiful, beautiful song.
This song perfectly captures a one word that only exists in my native language, "saudade". Saudade is a complicated feeling, a mix of nostalgia and melancholy, a longing for a time long past, and a flood of warm memories from that era of your life.
Interestingly enough, this song always felt sad for me. An intense feeling of longing and wistfulness fills the song. But the last few seconds of the song, where it resolves, paints a different story, as if reminiscing about a time with a long-gone friend, right before they appear in front of you, reuniting at last.
My congrats go to you, i've always loved watching your underatle music analyses, you are the only one so far who truly understood toby fox's music the right way, complimenti Marco 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Toby Fox, like every musician who worked on Homestuck, is very very talented. If I may implore you, please listen to "Three in the Morning" by Clark Powell or "END of Friendvangelion" by James Roach.
i just would like marco to experience the full cascade suite (cascade / flare / savior of the dreaming dead / black hole, green sun). toby was responsible for editing it all i think, and tensei, clark powell and malcom brown did the tracks.
This moment will always hit me in my heart. I've been a (mental health) social worker and used this sentence a few times. People get very emotional reactions to it.
Always love an analysis of Undertale's OST, Toby Fox really has a way of setting tone and empowering story through music. Honestly one of the composers that has inspired me the most to learn music and composition. If you love Undertale I can't recommend OMORI enough, I think you will find a lot to love in the game's music and story, despite its heavy tone.
Ahh undertale.... truly a great game.... the music top notch and emotional.... Can you react to minecraft music Sweden and Mice on Venus its got a lot of nostalgic, emotional aspects that may not be present to first time listeners but to veterans it invokes a raw emotion of the good old days (plus minecraft is a really good game with tons of unique and awesome music) Shoutout to C418
React to Efisio Cross - If you fall i will carry you, if you haven't already, pretty, pretty pls. It's an equivalent of High -quality classical music and works so good in tandem with European -fantasy art of WLOP.
This is one of those songs that would often pop into my head towards the end of a busy shift at work. I'd have to be careful though, because just imagining that warmth at the beginning would sometimes be enough to make me choke up a bit.
Yo, Marco! I know this is from a long standing IP but it is a game none the less! The ost from Transformers fall of cybertron is truly epic and its composed by Troels Folmann! One of my personal favorite tracks is "Break Free" which is the theme of when Grimlock escapes captivity and goes on a rampage!
Toby fox is honestly one of the greatest musicians and storytellers of our time. Capturing pure emotion in song. And not just simple emotions like fear or happiness any decent musician can do that. but those complex intimate ones. love, nostalgia, melancholy, childhood friendship, safety, longing, playfulness. Feelings you can’t ever explain with words but Toby knows. He feels and through his music he lets us feel them too. I’ve always described undertale as the memory of a childhood adventure we had in a different life. Brand new places, new friends, a place to save and an innocence that nobody has to get hurt and everything can be alright if we just keep going. And listening to the music now as we get older feels like meeting all those friends we made on that adventure again. After life beat us down. Responsibility and drama and stress. We have these friends who we never knew but also know like family coming and making it all alright again. Reminiscing about the time the fish lady chased us with a spear or when the crazy robot made us do one of those cooking shows our parents watched. And of course the pie our mother baked when we got back from our crazy antics.
Hey Marco! Have you ever played Returnal or listened to the Returnal OST? It's an awesome sci-fi game that takes inspiration from Lovecraft and Ridley Scott's Alien, and the soundtrack is haunting! Do give it a listen if you're interested 😊
Hey MarcoMeatball, I just discovered your channel and I'm really liking your aproach and how you analyze the music and OSTs of videogames. I've beem glancing at the videos you've uploaded and there are a lot that I'm liking and I'm going to be watching them little by little. But what surprised me is that despite you having some Mass Effect and even some less known video games, you haven't done anything on Dragon Age, Ratchet & Clank or Kingdom Hearts, which at least I personally think it's a shame as I think they are ones of the best games even more on an OST and music perspective, and I think a lot of people would like to hear from you about them, and I would definetively love it xD. And if you haven't played them, absolute recommendation. But well, if for whatever reason you aren't interested, it is what it is. And well, that's kinda it, hope you have a nice day.
I freaking Love undertale… could you do the ARK OST? Gareth Coker’s style really is special and is pretty well known. Would be awesome to see your opinions, especially since you know about ARK.
I hope for one day to see a reaction to attack on tarir from Guild Wars 2, kralkatorrik's theme guild wars 2 as well, and of course, never forget from Halo 3 On a side note, this song makes me happy and sad as it makes me remember my old but not forgotten cats

i agree its such a great song. you feel like your journey is at an end. your friends are here. your filled with love.
"That dog needs to stop" could totally apply to Undertale too. *Glares at the Annoying Dog*
*Toby appears * Who called me ?!
Fun Fact: the section starting at 2:05 is actually referencing Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X
Undertale music is always worth a revisit
I love your interpretation of this track, I think it's exactly the same.
