For many of us remember where we were when we heard the news of John Lennon's assassination. My parents and granny frequently spoke of where and how they heard of JFK'S assassination. For people of a certain age (I'm 61). We remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard about John death as well as the 9/11 attacks. For what it's worth when John was killed I was working as hospital nurse. The 4-12 shift. I heard when the midnight shift came in. I live in NYC and walked the 13 blocks to the Dakota (the famous apartment building where he lived and was shot in front of). I cried with the multidudes. Such a huge loss for the world.

The last picture in the music video where he’s talking about dying, he’s autographing a copy of his final album for a fan who’s standing to the right of him in the photo. That fan was Mark David Chapman, the man who a few hours later, shot and killed John Lennon. So the last photo of John Lennon alive is him giving his killer an autograph.

John and Yoko spoke to humanity, not market music messages for money, John and Yoko projected our Humanity in their art; musical, graphic, film, performance... They felt we were moving away from our humanity and into being market minions, Like some famous folk. John and Yoko marketed love and peace, ran advertising campaigns for peace, in all they did.

I've never seen that video. It brought tears to my eyes.
John Lennon was a genius songwriter along with Paul McCartney, and their songs will live forever. I too don't know what was going through his mind at the time, but he had his reasons.
And for that he was murdered by a coward, in the back.
I had his "Double Fantasy" album (Yes. Album) for a little over 2 weeks, overwhelmed with how many great songs were on it. In fact, I was installing some new speakers in my car the night he was murdered. I had just made the last wire connection, turned on the stereo to check out the sound and "(Just Like) Starting Over" was playing. YESS!!
I cranked it up...it sounded SOOOO GOOD on my new speakers.
    And then the song ended.
There was dead air on the radio.
    My system was silent.
For about 30 seconds I waited for another song to play.
    Nothing.....
The DJ finally came on. Announced the song that just played and followed that with the news of his murder an hour or so earlier.
My mouth dropped open in disbelief. Tears forming in my eyes.
I remember that night very well.
People always say they will never forget where they were or what they were doing when Kennedy was assassinated...
    Or when Elvis died...
    Or when the towers fell.
    .
Add John Lennon's death to that list.

This song was written for and released on his first solo album: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band which was released in late 1970, the same year the Beatles broke up. The song is basically John rejecting "idol worship" whether it be forms of religion and religious figures, politicians, and particularly musicians/entertainers (Elvis, Bob Dylan, and his own band the Beatles). During the 60's, the Beatles were the largest figures in entertainment and pop culture, and for many people, particularly kids, teenagers, and young adults, they were more important than kings, presidents, religious figures. They were the new Gods. That idolization never went away and the Beatles are the heroes of the Baby Boom generation, particularly those that grew up in the 60's. So when the Beatles broke up in early 1970 (officially), a whole generation of music lovers were devastated. Their sorrow was very similar to John's own death a decade later in 1980. In this song, John is basically telling everyone to get over it and move on. The line at the end of the song "The Dream is Over," is a great example of that. The whole dream of "peace and love" which defined the counter-culture movement at the end of the 60's was coming to a close, and John was telling them to quit living the fantasy and get with the real world basically. Time to move on from the Beatles, time to move on from the "dream of peace and love," etc. Your description of "it sounds like John is mad at the world" is a pretty accurate one, as he was angry at the Beatles, the press and media and how they treated him and his relationship with Yoko Ono, the Vietnam War, and his own personal issues (the death of his mother when he was a teenager). This song is basically all of that and was a great example of him dealing with all the anger, bitterness, resentment, and just wanting to put everything in the past behind him and move forward. Many of the songs on the first album expressed these themes, but this song was the prime example.
Based on the music video for this song and his assassination 10 years later, the song kind of takes on a whole new meaning and perspective, as you can add death and the finality of it and how people can mourn but must carry on and move on without the person that died (in this case Lennon).
To sum it up, this is one of his greatest and most meaningful songs. One of his most raw, emotional, and powerful songs. There's a bit of anti-religion message to it which might turn some people off, but there's much more to it than that.

I remember my dad was watching Sunday Night Football when Howard Cosell announced it. We were all in shock, like losing a friend.
His killer (I refuse to say his name) stalked him outside John & Yoko's home. John even was kind enough to speak to and sign a copy of his new record for that trash that killed him. He was actually shot 5 times.

He was in military prison for 1 year & met Patton whom he and the rest Loved. Patton allowed the German soldiers that he asked to volunteer to clean up the dead. So he was hard core. The army grabbed him in Romania as a 16 yr old. I was 18 we worked midnight's & on the way home Dec 9th 1980 the news came in. My Dad said the exact thing you said. Now what did this man do to deserve such a death. After that we were close. Why Christmas is never the same. My mom just passed bro be 3 weeks tuesday. I have been taking care of her since dad passed & I am a mess. You are right about those who were there for you when you had nothing. True friends. I hope you are well, my mom is with my dad now, of course complaining about the mess he made her....lol..no more pain. Bro , you want to die in dignity. No pain. Make sure you have someone to pull that trigger for you. You do not want to lay in agony or be hooked up to machines.

I'll never forget that day. I was home with my boyfriend. I was reading the John Lennon interview in "Rolling Stone Magazine" to him while he was doing the dishes. Then the phone rang, we'd gotten concert tix for John & Yoko just that day, San Diego was going to be the 1st city they played & we got them for our best friends too. It was my best friend, Karen. I said, "Hi, we got the tickets." She said, "Ok." She sounded sad & asked if she was ok. She said, "John is dead." I said, "What, is it just a rumor like Paul?" (Rumor in the 60's). She said, "No, turn on the TV. I was in shock. Called my fb in the room. We were just in shock. It didn't feel real. I'd followed The Beatles since I was only 4 yrs old & they came over. Finally started crying when they played, "All You Need Is Love." I said, "He died because he was for peace & love." Jesus, I cry even thinking about it. Unreal!!! I couldn't listen to any of his songs for over a year or I'd just cry. Now I love them as they bring back memories. I grew up with him. He went WAY TOO EARLY! Like MLK Jr & the Kennedy's - a great man who took a stance for peace & justice for all!

From the time I was old enough to understand, my parents made sure I knew it, and knew that the proper way to refer to his killer was He Whose Name We Must Never Mention.

Great song... saying believe in yourself regardless of what labels are put on you or other humans...we’re all one and the same... he wasn’t angry at anything & didn’t literally hate all the people etc he sang about - he wanted people to realise they too could be “as great” as the icons we look up to & worship 💞 All love peace & unity RIP John x Nice reaction btw 🤘🏼🙃

My heart still aches that John was taken from us so soon... such a brilliant, loving man. It's so hard to listen to "Beautiful Boy" knowing his son Sean was only 5 yrs old when John was murdered. Double Fantasy was his last LP, just released before his death. Old timers know Lennon's song w Beatles, "I am the Walrus", and is the reference, "I was the Walrus, but now I'm just John"... he left the band to focus on personal life, and family, and was shot just in front of the Dakota. Still hurts years later.

I'll never forget hearing about John Lennon's death. December 8, 1980. I was 10-years-old and obsessed with The Beatles. One of my first memories of world events. Seven years later, when I had to write one of those "person you admire" essays for a college application, I chose John Lennon. I think of him as a "martyr for humanity." The people who preach love and tolerance seem to get murdered: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assassinated_human_rights_activists

I never understood people's connection to John Lennon or his death (no disrespect intended); then last year John Prine died and it tore a hole in my heart so bad. It took many months to be able to listen to his songs or at least without crying. The fans in his community we all were knocked out. It's still so sad. I was able to kind of glimpse at other people's reactions to their stars shocking passings. It's that connection. Can't imagine it going away then seeing the comments from JL's fans here show it doesn't fade, is a fresh wound still.

Sorry for the long response. That last picture of him looking down after the song ends, the guy on the right was the guy who shot him. He signed an autograph for him earlier that day. I think the death of Lennon was a huge shock in many ways. It signaled the end of any potential Beatles reunion and for so many who grew up during the rise of the Beatles, it was a definite end. The Beatles had been broken up for 10 years by 1980 but there had been various rumors that they would get back together including the famous Saturday Night Live skit. The way it was announced to the world was shocking. Information didn't reach mass audiences instantly like today. For Howard Cosell to announce it on Monday Night Football, which was still very popular back then, to the world during a close game in the way only Howard Cosell could, just shocked the world, "rushed to Roosevelt Hospital. Dead. On. Arrival..." Back in 2012, my girlfriend at the time and I went to New York City, we visited the site of where Lennon was murdered. Lots of people taking pictures there. Young girl walks up to me and asks me what this place was. I told her John Lennon lived here and he was shot and killed right there. She looked at me somewhat confused as to think "who is John Lennon" but just said thanks and walked away.

John was on an FBI list. They didn’t do it but he stood for peace , unity and brotherhood and society at that time felt him a danger to the status quo.
John continued to spiritually evolve and the people running govts couldn’t handle it .
My generation changed the rules .
It was a most beautiful chaos.
Have you reacted to “Imagine”? Boils down to “all you need is love “.
The rest was metaphor for “mind control “ of systems .

I can add specific songs if you want.
