- How to stretch watercolor paper, I'm going to show you how to do this quickly & easily without lots of equipment.
My homemade stretcher boards can be made in many different sizes. They can be used again and again and there is no need to damage their surface with staples. These have given me MUCH better results than masking tape and my boards don't cost a fortune to make either.

@@TheDevonArtist Ah, yes, but I love this way. I've been struggling with using tape. Not going well. This way seems much more stable. Certainly worth a try. :D
@@carolinarkasas26 Carol, like you I can never seem to get the gum tape to stay stuck down, maybe it could have been the smooth wooden surface I was trying to stick it too. But I prefer my personal invention, it works! LOL Paul

Thankyou Paul, I do have one of those boards, I will have to see if I can make other sizes, perhaps get my son to cut the MDF for me lol, I will check out how to make one on the website I admit a smaller one would be useful. Your a gem with all these tips which you do generously share with us all 👍😊

Thank you Bruce, yes give it a try, as you know there are a few other way's people stretch paper, even using the shop bought stretcher boards as well.
Very creative. Will have to make a few in different sizes. Like it better than gummed tape!
Thanks Alex, all artists have their own preferences and for some gummed tapes works really well. I personally have never had much success with it sadly. 😢

Enjoyed learning how to make a stretching board Paul, thank you for sharing your diy skills with us .. I have always used gum paper to stick down the paper but find it lifts quite easily when the paper is really wet so I will ask my other half to cut me some mdf to size and I have some rope which will be perfect to use :) Thank you Paul
Your'e welcome Sharon. As long as the gap between the three MDF sheets is the same thickness as the rope it should work fine. You need the rope to be a snug fit but not tight, as you need to allow for the thickness of the paper as well. Paul :-)

I use a gatorboard. I bought 2 full sheet size boards and cut one into quarter sheet sizes, so I stretch one full sheet and four quarter sheets. Or one full sheet and one quarter sheet and six smaller sheets. I don't have to cut it off the boards, just pop the staples. I can do it all on my drafting table with a big sponge or hake brush.

Is there a tutorial on how to make the pucture with that fancy framework
Hi, I don't quite get what you mean. Maybe on how I then paint on the stretched watercolour paper? If so, then I just approach it in the same way as I would when working from a pad of paper. 😃
@@TheDevonArtist fancy framework was referring to that beautiful border. I usually use masking tape on pastels but thinking water would just lift low tack tape so how do you get your borders so perfect. Thank you for replying.
@@leerag I see what you mean, I do still use low tack tape such as washi tape or any low tack tape to be honest with you. I do make sure that I run my fingers back and forth over the tape before starting the painting though. Warm with a hair dryer when removing it. 😊

This is an interesting way of doing it. I personally use gatorboard and staples. The staples get loose if i am using a very wet wash. Do you think your way would work better for very wet washes?
Hi Lupert, I have used my method for very wet washes, and it worked well. I suppose this will also depend on the type of paper you use as well. I personally use Bockingford 140lb which seems to work well for this method. Paul :-)
One thing I keep wondering is, do you have a certain size paper you use for most of your tutorials. I downloaded an image to print, and the size was a little bigger than letter (8.5 x 11). I’m guessing the size doesn’t need to be exactly the same, but I also imagine making it too small or too large would make following your tutorials a little harder.

@@TheDevonArtist Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I actually have that size in a block. If it helps anyone, I’ve discovered the DickBlick watercolor paper blocks are quite good, and they’re less expensive than Arches. I’m in the U.S., so DickBlick might not be available to everyone. I’m good at accumulating art supplies, so I probably have just about everything! 😂

Personally, I don’t stretch mine. I will tape it down or I will use a block. Most of the artists I’ve been watching don’t stretch their paper, but I can see where it would be helpful.
