    I think we need to give Cat their credit here, they came with one mission and succeeded. I thought it was a possibility that it was going to be where the Catalyst wasn’t necessarily lighter but had better ergonomics that made it feel lighter. Turns out it’s both! Now just to see what this 858 has and then maybe we can party like it’s the 1970’s again?

    What about true back country sleds? That I would like to know because that's where weight means so much.... On a trail I was always under the assumption weight wasn't bad because of hook. Front and rear in the like. Boondocking I think where weight matters. Float, ease of mobility for the rider, and power to weight ratio. Those 3 I think is why weight is a big deal in the back country!

      We found out why the Turbo skidoo is heavier than the turbo Polaris when the non turbos are the opposite. It’s because the Skidoo is a Competition package which is considerably heavier than a standard XRS due to bigger shocks, 2 ply track, extra bracing and bigger brakes. There is no directly comparable Polaris turbo and unfortunately there is no NON turbo competition package. So we have no way to directly compare a ski-doo turbo and non turbo to find out how much it actually adds to the sled.

    Great video...thanks for weighing them all. It seems like the twin weights have pretty much been "the same" for years which is in that 520-580lb range full of fluids ready to ride. With the longer tracks, longer paddles and taller riding positions it seems like this is about as light as they can make them and not have chassis warranty issues. They tried to go super light weight with the 03 F-7 and it ended up being much heavier by its last year of production in 2006 because they had so many chassis cracking issues. I've weighed sleds over the years and when compared with a the 1994 T-cat (620lbs ready to ride), the 2000 121" ZRT 800 (620lbs ready to ride even with an extra heat exchanger in the rear of the tunnel) and a 2001 144" 1000cc mountain cat that weighs 640 lbs with only a little gas in it...the new sleds are lighter, make good hp for twins, have a better riding position (although you can add a bar riser and tall boss seat to an old sled and it improves it greatly), have longer tracks, longer lugs and more track behind the rider so better traction from a dead stop. Mountain sleds tend to be lighter but I believe that they have production sleds about as light as they can make them and still maintain structural integrity at a price point they can sell them. Sure you can go with carbon fiber ect...but that gets very expensive very quickly. Now it'd be interesting to take an older sled like a ZRT and put a 141" procross skid under it, a boss seat ect..and weigh it. :)

    the big thing missing in this to be a true riding weight comparison is the actual snow buildup. you need to run them through the snow for a half-hour or so and let the snow/ice cake on in the different nooks and crannies, then weigh them. some sleds are really good at not letting snow build up on them, and others will pack in a lot of snow in the track suspensions, heat exchangers and rails. this is where the true riding weight needs to be measured.

    • @pavmentsurfer13
      @pavmentsurfer13 8 месяцев назад +1

      This isn’t a realistic option at all. EVERY ride will result in different levels of snow build up on every sled. It’s also not valid because people who ride in different places and in different conditions will get different weights. We would literally have to weight every sled after every ride while also noting every aspect of every ride. Even after all that, it STILL wouldn’t represent every rider in every condition. the ONLY fair way to weight sleds is exactly how we did it.

      We were ALL shocked at the weight of the S4. Obviously, that power package is HEAVY. On the trail, it doesn’t FEEL heavy, but that extra weight is definitely robbing horsepower. We d really like to see Polaris do what skidoo is doing and design a purpose built 4 stroke just for the Matrix platform that’s light and has more horsepower.
