I grew up in a small town in Wyoming, and got to enjoy the awesome sky every night. Always had an appreciation for the universe, and how we're just some tiny speck of dust in the grand scheme of things. Then I moved out of state to a large city for college and suddenly it was gone, and I realized how easy it is to lose perspective of things. When I've tried to have conversations with friends about it or talk about the sky, no one cares, and they have no idea what they're missing. It's a bit sad.

I really get sad when I realize that I've already missed the night sky, the one that used to be covered with stars like dusts. It's hard to see it in personal now that I'm living not so far away from the city

I used to think how it was possible for ancient civilizations to navigate with the stars until I saw a picture of the unmolested night sky, and my mind was immediately blown and that question was answered in an instant, I've wanted to see a clear night sky ever since
I've seen this, August 2005 in Australia, about half way along the 8 hour road trip from Adelaide to Melbourne. It was very late, there was zero light pollution as far as the eye could see on a very flat landscape and I looked out of the window up at the sky and I could not believe what I was seeing. I asked my friend to stop the car for a while so we could appreciate it better. I've seen pictures in books but I always assumed you needed a telescope to see the Milky Way. One of the best experiences of my life.
Wow. I live in Perth, Australia and the light pollution is 7 which I mean it’s still sad but I can’t imagine living in Los Angeles where they have a light pollution of 9
I live in class 8-9. When i was a about 11 we went on a holiday to NZ and in NZ we staid for a week at a very remote place where there was class 2. I didnt knew much about light polution back then but i will never forget the sights at night. One of the most prettiest thing i ever saw. It felt like i could see the entire universe.
I'm in the Royal Navy and lucky that whilst at sea we can sail in total darkness (excluding basic navigation lights). To look up at the stars at night is a gift!!!
Every single time I saw a photo of a sky with no pollution I always thought it was a filter that could see better than the human eye and the first time someone told me this was real I seriously thought they were joking. Its sad to know you cant see a beautiful event that happens right above your head every night. I wish one day I would be able to see the night sky unfolding right before my eyes.
Well exactly the same thing with me, i always thought it was edited to look good but it turns out it isnt well now its ny dream to visit such a place where i can see this
there needs to be just one night every 5 years or so, where they shut all the lights of in America (obviously won't affect generators) and let people see the true beauty of the night sky... It's seriously sad that people actually think this is fake.
We have this here in Ireland, all lights for one day in honor of "green earth" are shut off for one hour at night. The towns that do it fully, including here is absolutely amazing!
SAVING THE DARK Millions of children will never see a sky full of stars. The night skies remind us of our place in the Universe. It gives us identity, makes us feel a connection. Think of all the great minds that gazed up at the night sky and were inspired by it. We've lost the potential for thousands of great minds.
God said to overpopulate the earth and multiply like a tree. he has created so many things for us but we didn’t consider appreciating it and new gens wont be able to see the most magnificent thing god has created, the galaxy :D
It is on my bucket list to go to the most least light-polluted place and just gaze at a view like in Number 1. It's fascinating to just stare at a view like that and think about the universe, and just how insignificant the earth is among billions of other planets in our galaxy.
no sure where you are located but on the East coast US there is Cherry Springs State Park in PA. It is one of only a handful International Dark Sky Parks in the US. If you are on the west coast, there are more options to choose from!
You are not alone, it takes ALOT for me to cry but this stuff right here hit me through my emotional shield for some reason. The music plays a big role in this video as well :-).
It can be found in less polluted areas, such as near mountains, where there is less commercial outrage, but more natural. It can be admired throughout the night.
I still remember as a kid when I used to study in a Hostel School in a far off village at a time in India when powercuts were so common. Me with my friends looking at the sky in amazement. That sight is still as clear as a daylight in my mind whenever I remember. I wish to see that sight of billions of stars twinkling again once. I'm ready to travel more than a thousand miles where I can watch that night sky again and experience the stars that lit up my childhood again after so many years of separation.
I'm getting goosebumps while watching this... it's truly wonderful to see the space above us. I feel bad for those living in urban/sub urban areas not witnessing this beauty...and I'm one of them.
2:08 I got really emotional, I really thought those pics I saw on the internet were just photoshopped I've never seen the true beauty of the sky at night without light pollution, I really need to see it at least once before I die, I can't believe we're missing this fantastic view everyday.
You do not actually see the sky like this, these photos are taken via long exposure using a camera. But the sky in areas with low light pollution is still very nice, with thousands of stars visible and the milky way being seen as a gray band across the sky, as long as the moon hasnt risen. But in areas with nearly no light pollution, the sky looks very beautiful, almost like the pictures, just a bit less colorful.
i once had a major whole city blackout during my campus stay and i definitely can see the milky way. The sky was perfect and clear. Unfortunately, most of the students didnt take the chance to look up at the sky during that time and instead used their flashlight from their phones to light the roads. I guess they really missed their once in a lifetime chance to view the milky way with their naked eye
Kiwi It’s not exactly once in a lifetime. If u learn about it, take interest, then go out into a wilderness area, then u can just watch the best natural light show!
@@starrytwilight9540 we shouldn't have to go to designated areas to see something we were supposed to see every night. It should be a every night in a life time deal.
@@cain8628 People need to travel at night, hence the lights. Safety is more important than a light show, even if it is really awesome. Going to designated areas for the price of a plane ticket is worth it for the safety of people driving.
I would go out every night that I wasn't on watch, onto the fantail of my ship, every night to see this as we crossed the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Having grown up in a heavily light-polluted area, I'd never seen anything like it and I never have since. Our industrialized society has robbed us of such a basic part of our shared humanity - the ability to look up at the night sky and see something greater than ourselves, something that isn't the darkness that we hide from. Thank you for bringing back this lovely memory, and for helping to inspire my children to both observe the beauty of space, and to preserve the natural beauty of the Earth so that we can continue to observe the stars.
After seeing this i feel that half of my life has wasted. 😔 a complete backout is needed so we can witness such a beauty of the Universe. Light light go away....😖
"Imagine if the stars came out once every thousand years. Everyone would die to see them. New religions would be created overnight. Instead, they come out every night, and we choose to ignore the majesty of creation."
On a regular basis I go out camping a least 200 KMS from the city and just spend the night watching the milky way drift past. I live in Australia, and we get to see more of the Milky Way than people in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a blast. And watching it long enough, you can tell the Earth is rotating as the Milky Way and stars move along. Just so beautiful.
Light pollution covers, + a cut off time for light would produce this effect. What's important to note is that, coming from someone living in a LP1 zone, it won't look anything like this. Beautiful for sure, no or little colors, and oftentimes obscured. The best times to view it is in the summer when everyone has their lights on late at night unfortunately, so unless you're much more hillbilly than me you won't get to experience the core very well like you get to in this video.
Seriously, this astonishingly beautiful universe filled with stars, galaxies, planets etc. puts on this show every single night, then tops it off with a beautiful sunrise, and basically nobody can see or wants to see :(
When i was 5-7 years old i lived in a small town for 2 years away from my city, and I still remember those days when I could see lots of stars whenever I walked with my mother or father during nights with my dog(my dog has passed away), this brought back some old memories, after I complete college and get a job, i'll go to the rural or city outskirts whenever possible to watch these beautiful stars again
Amazing footage, and a reminder of how bad light pollution has gotten. Go to *any* wilderness area that's enough miles from urban blight, and this is what you'll see. We've almost forgotten it's up there.
It was me Level 5 : Wow! So Beautiful Level 3 : There's an another World too Level 2 : Holy Sh+t! I might fall of the Edge Level 1 : Tell me I'm not on Earth
If you liked that video, you'll probably enjoy, "30 day timelapse at sea" it's really good and has 1 million likes. The day is peaceful, he recorded many sunsets and sunrises, and even storms. And at night there was no light pollution (obviously, since he was in the middle of the ocean) and saw many stars.
I’ll never forget when visiting the Negev Desert in southern Israel looking at the night sky and seeing the Milky Way for the first time. I was literally in awe. I was laying on a log (meant for sitting) at the hostel staring at the night sky for hours. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen
I've been to the Maldives and I was sleeping really early so I can get up early and make the most of the day.. One day I went to a fishing trip and when the sun got down we headed back to the island.. It was then and there were I looked up and saw the universe.. I climbed up the boat and cried.. It was gorgeous... From that day till the end of my vocation I stayed up late watching the universe.. I which we can see that sky in the cities
@@AmitKumar-nq7wk That's still the universe. If I stare at a pebble on the street that is still a part of the universe. I am staring at the universe right now.
Cali's a good place for stargazing / anything astronomy related compared to the east coast ! Nothing under Bortle 3 in Michigan, 4 for most of the east coast.
Awesome video. This is why I love camping and adventuring so much. Cities are great, but that sky out in the wilderness is something everyone should experience. Please, get out there guys!
I live in a very lightpoluted country and had the pleasure of seeing the night sky in bolivia in the atacama desert region. It was incredible. The most impressive thing I saw the entire trip. It was the first time I saw the milkyway and was incredibly impressed by it.
If the first thing you think about after seeing a beautiful sky is "LSD," you are pretty much hopeless. It's something that's supposed to take you inward and make you appreciate life as it is and not through some filter. How out of touch do you have to be, where you can't even enjoy reality without artificial enhancement. Truly sad...
I don't think that's always the case, some people respect the beauty of something while sober and also think it's beauty is amplified while under the influence of certain drugs.
+nadoeloiskat, it takes a good camera with good light gathering power, yes, but there are upper end consumer cameras that can do this. I have a Canon that I've used to shoot lunar eclipses, and it will pick up the sky like this. What you see in this video is what your eyes can see in the right location. It's not exaggerated.
+nadoeloiskat, as I said in a separate post, you have to escape the urban blight. Getting "outside the city lights" isn't enough anymore. You have to get *away* from cities altogether, and yes, the higher the mountains the better. Night photos taken from the ISS show just how bad and how widespread our light pollution is these days.
I saw it one time in a small village in India. I was so shocked to see that the sky actually looks so spectacular. There was pitch dark everywhere and I could see all the stars. It was amazing
Back in those days when we had no inverters or generators and the lights used to go out in hot summer nights I and my family used to go to the terrace and lay on mats facing straight up to the sky. And my child self was always amused by the huge beautiful galaxy of stars. I miss those days, night skies show no stars. This generation of humankind has stolen the happiness of the next generation.
I can remember as a child in the 50’s laying on the front porch looking up to the sky with my sisters and cousin, attempting to count the stars, and seeing the Big Dipper, and admiring other shapes forms in the sky made from the stars, I walk out on my porch now, and I miss that beauty.
It is always feel so surreal when you look up to the night sky, it's endlessly beautiful, it makes us realize that we are so small in this big universe.
You actually not only can see Andromeda (although it´s the biggest and brightest), but also M33 a spiral galaxy and also the two Magellanic Clouds of course.
Mootykins yes it is. I live in level 6 light pollution and I can STILL see Andromeda. It looks like a smudgy star. Just barely noticable. You have to look a little to the side of it but you can see it.
Our eyes can't see the colors of the milky at night without the aid of a camera. I live in a level 2 zone and I'm no stranger to using a camera to see the colors of the night sky. Simply put, the cones in our eyes need a certain amount of light to see color. Very few objects in the night sky emit enough light to see those colors. I've been to a few observatories through out the States and never seen that much color. Just look at the back ground of the videos and see how detail you get. Last time I was outside during a new moon phase, I could hardly make out any detail nearby. It's a great video showcasing what is above us every night. Looking at the planets and celestial objects through a telescope is an amazing sight.
The first time I went camping I was literally scared to look up at night, I had ZERO clue the sky could look like that and it was incredibly imposing and made me feel small and like i could not breath. Seeing even a hint of the Milky Way especially was shocking
I have never seen any deep sky objects in my life. Unfortunately, financial situations have forced me to move just north of Indianapolis, which happens to be the largest and brightest city in the entire state. There are lights everywhere I turn. It saddens me to think that I have never even glimpsed the Andromeda Galaxy or the Milky Way, or more than 30 stars in the sky.
That was so beautiful, I wish I could see it without light pollution, when I was a child the stars were visible just about every night. I tell my grand children how much clearer the sky was then, they really can,t comprehend it.
I am trying to tell my loved ones how beautiful is the night sky full of stars but most of the times no one seems to understand it. I hope someday someone will sit next to me and enjoy the view ❤️
The glory of this brings me to tears every time I watch this. It may seem we are small and insignificant but we are part of something that is much much much bigger than than anyone can imagine.
It's so important that light pollution be addressed. It's often overshadowed by litter, air pollution, and water pollution. All need to be fixed.... Hello, how're you doing?

Great video that every person should watch and understands the issue with light pollution,There should be some kind of petition to sign to preserve as much locations as possible
Imagine being a Native American. Being able to look up every night and see the unfiltered sky. Imagine being able to look up and wonder about the Milky Way. About the universe. About where we are and why we’re here. That would be nice.
Charles Messier did his sky observations of all 110 Messier objects in the 1700s from downtown PARIS. Light pollution everywhere has gotten much worse.
I am now living in a very crowded city for my job and studies, and the nightlife is very popular here. They turn the light on throughout the night and the pollution is very serious. I always miss my hometown. People go to their bed around 10 or 11 p.m. and the light streets are also very dim [It's okay, the crime cases are very low there]. The light pollution is relatively very low and I used to enjoy star gazing on every pleasant day.
And He(Allah) is the One Who has made the stars as your guide through the darkness of land and sea. We have already made the signs clear for people who know. This is what our ancestors seen every clear night before the industrial revolution. Crazy to think the more advanced we become the more we lose our souls...
I remember when I went to Mexico in the more rural area and seeing the stars for the very first time. It looked just like 2:00. That made me want to move as soon as possible!! I love the night sky 💜💜
Wasn't it Tesla that is the one we should thank for basically all electricity and a bunch of other stuff? Edison was just a cruel businessman and thief.
I'm convinced that humans have spiritually lost something by not being able to see this anymore. Imagine being reminded every night what a massive universe we live in, that's gotta do something for your soul.
So easy to forget and when you look at that Milky Way and you really realize what you're looking at, it's truly awe-inspiring. I don't think simply showing that picture to somebody. Does it justice. You have to show them pictures of full galaxies and show them how it is from our perspective. What you are truly looking at is just absolutely awe-inspiring. 😮😮
I never imagined that the centre of our galaxy is that bright to light out planet in the dark sky. It's the best view from nature that we are missing in our life. Priceless 😍
When I went out west with mt mom driving along the ET highway I saw more stars than I could ever image, and even some clouds. I had no idea you could see that with the naked eye. That same trip I went to death valley we didn't stay until night however, I'll also never forget this moment. As we were leaving we drove right into a huge rainstorm(this was in the summer too). After we drove out of it and death valley was behind us we saw a rainbow their that stretched across the horizon. The one time I went to death valley I experienced a rainstorm and a rainbow. What are the chances?
As I live in the Northern Hemisphere of our planet, I've made a plan to go on trekking adventure next summer with my cousins to a remote place free from light pollution of our capital city and other villages in the kashmir valley in order to see the magnificent core of our milkyway galaxy 😍😍

It is impossible for your eyes to see the sky the way it’s shown in the video even if you went to the darkest regions of space.
When light pollution hides the stars, we too easily forget we live on a planet flying through space. The best show on Earth is the stars!

I asked my friend to stop the car for a while so we could appreciate it better. I've seen pictures in books but I always assumed you needed a telescope to see the Milky Way. One of the best experiences of my life.
yea i hope i see it someday
I am physics lover but I didn't watch so far this cluster .you were lucky
Wow. I live in Perth, Australia and the light pollution is 7 which I mean it’s still sad but I can’t imagine living in Los Angeles where they have a light pollution of 9

It can be found in less polluted areas, such as near mountains, where there is less commercial outrage, but more natural. It can be admired throughout the night.
It has to be clear weather (no clod) and you need to see the sky for like 15 minutes, so your eyes can adjust with the low light environment
I still remember as a kid when I used to study in a Hostel School in a far off village at a time in India when powercuts were so common. Me with my friends looking at the sky in amazement. You do not actually see the sky like this, these photos are taken via long exposure using a camera. But the sky in areas with low light pollution is still very nice, with thousands of stars visible and the milky way being seen as a gray band across the sky, as long as the moon hasnt risen. And watching it long enough, you can tell the Earth is rotating as the Milky Way and stars move along. Just so beautiful.

It does not need to be pitch black we woul just need to put covers around the edges of street lights. That what two town in Colorado did
Light pollution covers, + a cut off time for light would produce this effect.
