Siddharthan Chandran: Can the damaged brain repair itself?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 фев 2014
- After a traumatic brain injury, it sometimes happens that the brain can repair itself, building new brain cells to replace damaged ones. But the repair doesn't happen quickly enough to allow recovery from degenerative conditions like motor neuron disease (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or ALS). Siddharthan Chandran walks through some new techniques using special stem cells that could allow the damaged brain to rebuild faster.

I have sustained a TBI and I have, fortunately pretty much recovered, my one piece of advice, that I've come across, is to constantly expand your mind with knowledge.
Brad Berry can you elaborate on how you recovered and who assured you that you recovered?
I recently got into boxing and fell in love with it, but i leave practice with a headache every time and maybe even a concussion.
Any advice would be appreciated
Brad Berry what a shame i got an std
Fantastic talk! As a stroke patient, I must tell you that I have hope for future benefit of such studies :) Thank you
How are you doing now? My good friend suffered a stroke too...
@@Ugandangirl hey
I got a nice laugh since I'm both a rocket scientist and a person with brain trauma. On most days I cry but got some humor this morning... I write quantum theorems on reverse gravitation yet since my car accident I sometimes have no idea where I'm at when I get out of the grocery store. It's interesting. But I have faith in my brain's ability to come back better than ever with my daily meditation practice, delicious organic nutrition, and my amazing therapists at Boulder Brain Recovery. 😎💛
DIVINE COMMERCE How are you going now ??
I'm recovering from brain trauma too. I'm determined to make a full recovery. Also add accupuncture if u can im finding it helps a lot
DIVINE COMMERCE I hope you also do stem cell therapy come on now if your rocket scientist you should be able to figure that out.
i was an former ice, meth user did i for 10 years by the time i got of it my mind was fucked and fried in the end i turned to meditation and tremor therapy its taken me years to get better.
Check out lions mane mushrooms,
This is literally how you can get people and especially young people into science
Nope. Big words plus chasing prestige does not encourage good scientists
It's not about Young... This is about Indians (Hindus) gets chance now...
Young people are already into science
We need more doctors like this, doctors should be scientists of biology but today they are just salesmen.
This is a hugh problem in oncology... I met doctors that had great problems with alternative drug use (I do not mean esoteric pills or something) but drugs (certain antibiotics etc.) that had great epigenetic impact against certain cancer cells rather than systemic chemo with their standard stuff (Doxetaxel, Platins, Paclitaxels) and the crazy thing is that they rarely make a chemosensitivity test before using them. So the first line of chemotherapy is "good luck" shot into the void most of the time. There is a big gap between doctors and scientist and patients most of the time believe doctors have some scientist level knowledge which they dont (most of the time)
I'm going to tell you right now; the brain most definitely repairs itself. It used to be hard for me to put cohesive sentences together and now, at forty four, I'm able to learn and remember better than ever before.
How is brain repapir itself?.. I was fall i a baby... Has something happened?.. I don't know?..
@@busrakorkmaz7842 God bless you.
Fantastic level of hope for us brain injury patients & I hope to look forward to brain stem cell treatment to regain the use of my left arm & hand, improve stability & walking & regain what essentially was a 'normal' life. I think this speech gives us all more hope for the future for so many neurological conditions & improve millions of lives very soon.
Thank God, such people to be among us.
Thank you prof. and all of your colleagues, you have planted big hopes.
That was wonderful! Great work Dr. Siddharthan!!
Smart fella with a good heart .. all power to him
Love it when u see someone that passionate about what they do
I wonder why these abnormalities such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease seem to present themselves in areas of increased substantia nigra, and what would be the practical results of regenerating lost neurons from these areas using the fruits of this research...nice! Keep it up! Try to gather as much support as possible in order to raise the masses' awareness towards this branch of science.
One of the best talks I have heard and I do congratulate on your articulation on the subject. Your speech points to you being a Malaysian or a Singaporen and Kudos to that
We need more innovative people like him, thank you.

In 2010, I was diagnosed with Ataxia and since then, I've been saying the same thing he is now, but without much scientific knowledge to back up my claims. I am very glad this man can better explain this.
Did you recover from ataxia?
Amazing talk! Awesome!

Thank you for sharing this video Dr Chandran.

The reason this happens to peoeple's brain is because the brain isn't used in the right way but instead it's bombarded with stress, anger, and lack of relaxtion.. that's why meditation is so powerful
COMPLETELY AGREE
Could you provide a source that emotions can do so much damage to the brain? could this sounds like BS
yes, the brain is capable of entering many states of brainwave activity.. ergo alpha, beta, theta ect.. it has been proven that these states of brainwave activity are directly linked to happiness, life longevity, increase in positive outlook on life, and increase in sexual energy.. there are many universities that have published scientific journals citing their findings.. all of which are available to anyone online. Just try meditation for yourself and it will speak for itself
Not metal contaminates that induce prion formation?
Although I agree that meditation and self awareness is mandatory in promoting a healthy brain, there are chemical mechanisms that cause these diseases. Our work environments are loaded with copper, aluminium, and many other metallic residues that can have adverse effects on protein folding processes.

Why is it so hard to believe that there is a physiological aspect to your emotions that physically affect the integrity of your body and its biochemical equilibrium? A search will reveal that what Psy Qui mentioned is supported by research: news.stanford.edu/pr/96/960814shrnkgbrain.html

really a very good news ,seems to be a break through
Reminds me of Dr Vilayanur Ramachandran, another wonderful neuroscientist.
Are we there yet?
This is excellent! I didn't unite u def stand the concept of the marrow repairing itself. I wish he'd explained that better, but this would pair up nicely with lissa rankin's principles.
Where about can we go for this type of therapy please? And what is the progress these days, after 4 years from your article?
Good man Chandran.
When intelligence, the capacity to see a patient as a whole and unique being, and compassion meet, great discoveries are possible, and a great scientist is born. Which is really rare- but here the case.
Amazing
Will this work to counteract decades of drug abuse?
My kudos to Siddharthan Chandran & TED for this fantastic talk and insights! I pray a cure or path to recovery is possible soon for patients. I speak from a personal loss where my mother had terminal FTD (fronto temporal dementia) and I saw how the degeneation of the brain cells enveloped her into a withdrawed state and it was completely disheartening to see someone so full of life slowly fade away! my prayers and best wishes for more positive cures and potential for people and families coping with the various forms and challenges of Dementia.
excellent
very interesting
If you ever had damage - well I should say injury you would know if it could repair. The Nueropathic pain I go through on a daily basis sometimes lets me believe YES our Brain can repair itself.

Hi how are you need help please
I suffered a brain injury a year ago and am hoping to get intrathecal administration of mesenchymal stem cells to help heal more quickly. It's insane that their use isn't approved in the U.S.
interesting, i have MS myself and would be interested in reading the full study on what he was talking about....can someone help me find this please
So this was 6 years ago. Where are we now?
At 9 months old I crawled off a 12ft balcony onto rocks below. Severe TBI. Fracturing. Im mostly normal but my memory struggles big time and at age 37 my mental capabilities are seemingly diminishing.
You can be cured by God's mercy nano-medication, i.e. to help endogenous neural stem cells
to be triggered for regeneration, i.e. to clear away those inhibitory molecules.
Stem cells hold the key to the future of medicine. But, as it's shown here with surprised expectations, it should be studied thoroughly and carefully and appropriately.
Love Ted talks 😀. This one is really interesting. The brain is amazing.
Some I've seen make me wonder how they were approved to do one. What are the qualifications for someone to do a TED talk? I don't want to mention any specific talks to put them down publicly. I'm sure many would agree that not all talks are equal in credibility. I am therefore genuinely curious as to their acceptance process and overall intention with the Talks.
Thank you
one of the things I dont like about TED talks ( as a whole they are great but there a few things that should be improved) is they dont give any references or further reading/watching... if they do, it would be great...
Wassup bro greetings from istanbul!

Yes very much so, I'm living proof of that. Thank you divine.
I've always wondered if a lot of brain damage is caused in childhood? The brain is developing and so many kids play sports where it's easier to damage something (brain) that is growing?
"The brain is capable of repairing itself, but not well enough." That's not how nature works. Nature creates completely self-healing organisms (what would the point be of a cell that has potential but no ability to actualize it?) and WE INTERFERE. See, e.g., Terry Wahl's work on MS. Given appropriate nutrition and lifestyle choices, brains self-repair (this is not the same a developing something that was never there in the first place, though in some cases that may be possible too). It's a pity he's waiting for a drug, for some external rescue. If we clean up our lifestyle choices and live in alignment with our physiology (exercise, clean air, organic nutrient dense food, adequate sleep, stress management, connection with others, avoid noxious substances, etc.), the healing comes from within.
What about schizophrenia
A person who is very close to me suffers multiple sclerosis, I'm hopeful this research will provide them with a cure..
Prem Suraj check out the Coimbra Protocol!
Estriol drops has also been used to reverse MS brain legions
God bless this man.
Now please.... where are the treatments.

I recently suffered a drug overdose and my brain has not been the same since. I have been having trouble remembering things, articulating sentences and feeling more depression and anxiety than usual. I hope that neurogenesis and neuroplasticity will help me to go back to the way I was before.
Jordan there are some great videos available on Ted Talks about brain repair. the most important thing you can do is have faith and hope that you will get better. Actually I am certain that you will get better from the research I've come across. Life is a shared experience, but we also largely shape our reality with the power of our mind. Eat healthy food (cut out the meat entirely) some foods are better than others. try to reduce your stress. A little stress is good for growth, but focus on deep breathing and drinking water. Try meditation. Try to exercise daily. Never stop believing and struggling for progress. you will make progress. Life is all about struggle and progress, but progress always wins :)
Thank you Doug, I can't tell you how nice it feels to have your advice. I'm currently doing everything you mentioned, running, yoga, meditation, I also follow a ketogenic diet and avoiding sugar where possible. I used to be a vegetarian but since the overdose (Jan 1st 2017) I've been eating meat for the nutrients, but I am thinking to be a vegetarian again as I feel happier eating food that hasn't been killed. But I'm worried at the same time that if I quit eating meat I won't get adequate levels of DHA and other important vitamins and minerals for brain repair.
I agree with what you say, life is about struggle and progress. I believe we learn the most by facing challenges and overcoming them.
I am suffering dippression and my both frontol and left temporal lobes tiny damge how can repair.. Plz help

Metal and radiation toxicity is the more plausible cause other then tbi's and lack of physical exercise, as well as moderating the use of technology can prevent this. A solution would be a medication that removes toxins without having a negative reaction on the brains circutry.
