- A step-by-step video highlighting the process of rebinding a used Bible.
This is my personal Bible that I rebound myself in pigskin just over 3 years ago. At that time I didn't know much about Bible rebinding and the product wasn't perfect. After additional research and practice, I finally felt comfortable rebinding my own Bible. It was a joy making the Bible and the video. I hope you enjoy it as well!

I didn't even know rebinding Bibles existed until I saw it on RUclips! But I've never had a clue how it's done. It's so sad to see a naked book like that, especially a Bible. It turned out great! It makes me happy that people are still learning this old type of hand-done craftwork!
What this made me think of is salvation. Thru God’s grace we become new. The old man is shed and the new man is born, God is so good, amen.

I just purchased an old, VERY well loved and worn down bible off ebay that I plan to re-bind.
I have a little experience with binding but nothing compared to this craftmanship level!

This is the best Bible rebind that I have seen, the edges do not extend 1/2 over the pages of the Bible, what a beautiful job. Take Care and God Bless.

@@IdratherbeinHobbiton Hi! Not exactly as I'd like to (using leather) but the result was OK. Where I live is hard to get good leather, prepared for bookbinding, as well as the necessary tools. But I will get there! ;-)

Practice (and patience and grace toward yourself while learning) is key. Ive had to re-learn that over the years with many skills lol.

Hi there, SDG! You and I have actually met before at TMS, at lunch with our mutual friend Yadid. You recently rebound a Bible for one of my wife's friends, which is how I heard about this video. I’ve recently started rebinding Bibles and have found your video to be extremely helpful, so thank you! My method is based on Diego Caloca’s, but I found yours to be better on a couple points-such as using the bone folder to enhance the spine nubs.
I do have a couple questions about your tools:
1. Where did you get your chisel? Am I right to think that yours is round hole and not diamond hole? What size is the chisel tip?
2. Where did you the mat you used with the chisel, and what’s it called?
3. Where did you get your corner cutter? Half-round cutters are easy to find, but I’ve only been able to find a few options for arc-shaped cutters.
4. What is the metal tool at the 05:31 mark called? I mean the one that you use to further enhance the spine nubs, and that you later use to mark the stitching line at 06:56.

My bible is in badly need of a rebinding & recover.
I'm an experienced leatherworker and have all the tools you show in the video, but I have some questions on materials.
What type of glue are you using for the paper/binding? I use eco-weld because I love how tacky it is. Would this work?
What is the webbing or reinforcement made of?
What type of paper is the inside liner?
I'm familiar with leather-I have all different weights but all of the paper supplies confuse me.

Hi Bobby. Happy to be of help. The glue I use on the spine is PVA glue. I also use it on the corners, since it doesn't dry as quick as EcoWeld and gives more working time. The reinforcement is called "Bookbinding Mull/Super Crash." As far as paper goes, I just use some cardstock. Hope this helps in your own attempt to rebind a Bible.

I absolutely love that cream colored pig skin with the black stitching. I'm going to try to Re-Bind the Crossway ESV I preach from thanks to your videos. It's been falling apart and now I have hopes of rebinding it. Can you tell me how to acquire a cream colored leather like you originally used for this bible before you decided to re-bind it. Brilliant, thank you. I worry about all the squished out glue, but you just wipe it off. Does it mark the leather or leave a film in the grain?

great video! question, what was the type of light brown leather material used at 2:32 that was put between the cover and the liner? what is the point of that material?

Couple of questions:
1. How are you measuring the length of your thread for stitching, and is it one thread or two separate threads?
2. What sort of tool are you using for making the outline groove where you are punching holes.
Awesome job with your stitching! Can you please share what thread you used and where you got your leather? I am wanting to try and rebind my mother’s bible.
I use mainly 0.6mm or smaller for thread. I get my leather from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply, and have them split the leather.
Does the liner itself have to be leather to make a strong hinge, or is bonded leather or leathercloth ok? Thank you.

I recommend goatskin, about 0.5mm in thickness.

I’ve just noticed, you stuck the hollow to the cover not the text block. Not seen it done that way before.
If you don’t mind saying. What is that brown paper / board you use when you glue the leather on it
What material is the inside cover liner made of? Is this like craft paper?
Question @SDGLeatherGoods, why did you put craft paper between the liner and cover?
That is actually not craft paper. It is a 0.5mm thick lather of bonded leather. I use it for two reasons. First, it's basically like a template to make sure that the leather doesn't stretch too much. Second, it adds a little bit of stiffness to the cover, which I like.
Hi there, what weight leather did you use and did you have to pare or skive it down? Great work!
I ask the supplier to split the leather down to 1-1.25oz (0.4-0.6mm). This way I don't need to worry about skiving it myself.
What is the material you use for the hubs/cross?
Is it just another piece of leather? I've seen other people use leather cord for hubs.

I need to do this to a couple of bibles. Where would I get the leather from? What if I want to add pages in the bible before I rebind it? I would need extra leather because the spine would become wider. Help!

Found a guy reviewing an SDG rebind and that’s what he said was in there anyway. He had the same concern as me, he didn’t want the cover too floppy.

Yes, that is some bookbinding tape. But I don't use that anymore, since the PVA glue is enough.

JESUS GAVE HIS LIFE FOR US AND LIVES AGAIN!

Blood coming from his body, NAKED, hanging on that cross like Roman torture weapon! What a Lord God and Savior! He had to. HE is God the Son. Only His sinless blood could pay for all our sins. 1 John 2:1-2.
He died on our behalf! We believe in Him and who He is, trusting the shedding of His blood as payment for ALL our sins, and His burial and resurrection from the dead the third day for our eternal life! John 20:24-31. HE LIVES EVERMORE!
We can live forever through Him. God forgives our sins through Him otherwise our sins will prevent us from living in Glory with Him and our family in the faith the Bible describes. We study to show ourselves approved in wisdom and further truths about Him! We are in a family! God's family. CHRIST'S BRIDE! We got to know Jesus Christ better and better!
