  • India's Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told CNBC's Hadley Gamble his country will carefully assess whether to support a G-7 proposal to impose a cap on the price of Russian oil. “There are many conversations going on due to a large number of factors,” Puri said at Gastech 2022 in Milan, Italy.

      @@bn1193 Well you heard it wrong!! India put up the condition that it will accept the Cap if US lifts sanction on Iran and Venezuela!! Which US cannot and it was a telephonic conversation initiated by Iran Foreign minister, they didn't meet. The conversation was about the bilateral and JCPOA along with Iran nuclear talk was also discussed.

      He has been a diplomat, and came via meritocracy (while being excluded of the 23%-50% seats of available positions due to reservation system/reverse discrimination system which is also a primary reason for brain drain in STEM from out of India to USA and Europe) to the service unlike USA where the winning Executive branch decides not just the ministers/secretaries, but even the bureaucrats in a "winner takes it all" manner.

    I think the representative from India is correct. HIs responsibility is to do the best he can for his people. If the US wants to talk about democracy then why did Nixon support the coup d'etat in Chile? Why has the US invaded countries around the world? How many people were killed in Vietnam Iraq Syria Afghanistan Libya and or indirectly killed in Yemen? Let's stop the hypocrisy

      Jaishankar also is very well qualified and is excellent in getting a point across.
      India has a great future.
      Assuming there is one.
      There were occasions in the past when a nuclear conflict was possibility .
      There are individuals who seem determined to make what was a possibility a reality.
      Consider this:
      When Puri or Jaishankar speak at a function people are attentive and dwell on their opinions and feel that they have been educated in matters they may not have even considered.
      In contrast :
      No wait.... let's not speak of the brain-dead.

I saw a similar interview with Lavrov probably the greatest Foreign Secretary on the planet and a woman from the BBC who was going to show Lavrov who was boss. He politely destroyed her. She didn’t have the intelligence to know who she was up against and came at him with questions she had got from western media outlets. She ended up being rude so he made the now well known classic remark “ for a Brit you are very rude “ she was leaning forward on the edge of her chair clearly agitated and Lavrov sat there quite relaxed calmly answering the questions

    I understand where the reporter is coming from, but its not the same as asking us Europeans to sacrifice some of our earnings for higher prices of oil (and higher prices of everything else actually) as it is to ask Indians to make the same sacrifice since that sacrifice in Europe has a lessser impact on our lives than it would have on Indians. So in that sense I agree with the Minister. The reporter tried to pose an ethic question without realizing that its more unethical for him to throw 1.4 Bil people under the bus who are economically worse off than Europeans. He should have asked her for instance this: would Americans (and Europeans) stop buying cheap Chinese goods if China were to attack India? Would have been funny to see her answer that question.

    The west block needs to understand that India is not buying for privileged citizens to run their six cylinder SUVs. Majority of Indians use 90-150 cc motorcycles and that's everything for them. It generates business, is the only mode of transport for them. India must safeguard these people's interests because they are already standing near the cliff!

      Well to be entirely fair, it is the same story in India. Majority of Indians blame the UK & the US primarily, but all NATO countries for Russia's invasion and occupation of Ukraine. Is that entirely fair? I watch Indian media daily, as well as read social media comments. The general consensus is that the West is bad; whilst Russia is their big brother, who is the underdog who was backed into a corner by the bigger dogs.

I can easily suggest the further you live from Central Europe, and the Baltics, the greater your capacity for sympathy to Russia. West Asians, East Asians, Africans, South Americans may not fully "understand" the true nature of Russians if they have not existed under Soviet rule. If you had your relatives over time raped, killed, and conscripted into Russian army, you would most certainly feel differently about them.     India won't give in to the puritan concepts of the west to punish Russia. We won't compromise our Energy security for any country, irrespective of the fact whether it's a democracy or not.
    This is simply because no one else will do this for us. We have had our fair share of Europe and US centric approach towards us!

      I concur. The key is for India to play both sides of the fence to help their GDP grow and keep peace in their region. This will not be easy, but Indian leadership appears to be pretty sharp. They just might pull it off. I hope they do.

    As an Indian i must say our govt.did the best thing by buying Russian oil...and managing our energy needs in the correct manner...becoz here people cannot afford a 25-30% rise in energy cost for any reason weather geopolitical or local....if the govt is not elected what are these ministers going to do by keeping good terms with the ideotic western partners and there ideotic agendas...Russia is a time tested friend of India and India should stay in the right side of this changing world order.

      India is not on the side of Russia tho. Buying oil is a demand and supply driven act between two countries.
      India really can't be on Russian side when it's CCP which holds the control cards of Russia. Read and educate yourself more on this.

      @@varun2250 I think it is you should educate yourself more on this. India is a friend of Russia going back years and you don’t stop being a friend because they are friends with an enemy. It doesn’t say they will always be friends and there may be a time when it is not expedient for India to be so? There are military exercises in Vostok with Russian, Chinese and Indian armies participating. India will do what is best for itself. The fact that India will not condemn Russia in spite of extreme pressure from Britain and America I would say shows a remarkable friendship. To be so arrogant to suggest to someone that they should educate themselves, because you think your opinion is better than theirs shows an excessively inflated ego and I would say it is your opinion that is floored
