Hey kit, can you try applying the feelwrite2 film over the boox Go 10.3 or note max and use the ceramic nib pen to see how it feels? Does it feel better or worse than default writing feel of those devices?
I am so excited!! If you can do a battery test and see how long it lasts with entire daily use. I saw a chinese video of it and the battery drained from 89% to 85% in a 10 minute video of flipping through different apps and readers to show different content on the screen. If you can also compare it with boox go 10.3 and viwoods in screen clarity and writing feel? Thank you 😊
3700 mah down from 6300 from the Tab X. It's nearly half. It would be a trade-off if the note max is lighter, but it's not either. 560g of the Tab X vs 615g. But the cost is lower~
You can't make a direct comparison to the battery in the Tab X because Note max does not have a frontlight but the Tab X do. Not having a frontlight saves a lot of energy.
Hey Mr. Kit, can you try comparing the screen to an actual A4 sized paper to get a feel on how similar (or different?) it looks compared to an actual paper?
In future, would you please include the comparison of the reading of the b&w content on the Note Max versus Go10.3 , but on the Natural Light (say outside, or the light from the window...) only. That's something I'm in particularly looking for. Thanks in advance.
Got excited seeing this video notification, but then realizing the Note Max is still not out yet was a bit of a ride. I'm curious how easy it is to read in low light conditions if there is no front light, and how quickly it processes some apps. I don't imagine it will bother me much as I'll still have other devices like my phone or laptop. My primary uses will be reading and taking notes as a history teacher who continues to do academic research, reading and taking notes while doing language practice, and potentially given its size, displaying sheet music when playing my synths or other instruments.
Yeah, I think you have to know that you won't need the light. I'm currently typing on it, but have to have the overhead lights on, so it's not ideal TBH. But at work you will be fine. :-)

I'm debating getting a 13.3 tablet or monitor for a writing setup since they cost the same. I love my tab mini, but it's a bit slow for typing and editing.
In some ways yes, 300PPI is a nice to have for example. It feels like an up to date build and form, and maybe if you need the keyboard case. But if the Tan X is currently doing what you need it to, I would say that this hasn't made it obsolete. :-)
(question for future) I've heard from some users that the speed on Note Max may not be up to the expectations. Given the CPU is the same as on Go10.3, do you see that BSR makes the device faster (say to compare to the Go10.3 and/or Boox Palma 1) ? Maybe, try to opening very large hyperlinked PDF file, say some calendar (1k pages) and try swiping through the pages and/or pressing on the hyperlinks, will this device be able to navigate throuh that hyperlinks faster than Go10.3 for the same file?
wow - I've been really looking forwards to this one, Kit. I'm still planning on getting the Max, but I've some apprehension regarding the contrast. With carta 1300, I think I was hoping for a bit better. Some images show the Palma, of all devices, as being especially sharper in its contrast. So comparisons here would be appreciated. Quick question... I have never owned a Boox so I am not familiar with the interface. Is it possible to upload a PDF document and use it as a template on Boox tablets? I own a Supernote Nomad and I have been waiting for the Supernote Manta, but I am a bit undecided because of the price of the Manta... If I am going to spend that much, maybe a slightly larger tablet would be preferable... I'd be interested in a comparison of the writing feel on both, which is also important... Yep, you can use the pdfs as a template on boox, or just write on top of the PDF. Writing feel is better on Manta, but the Max isn't bad. Decide if you need the size and the app functionality!

@ I’m married to a retired school orchestra director, so we have stand lights, same as we’d use with standard paper, plus most of my gigs take place outdoors, which is another reason why I’d rather use e-ink instead of an LCD iPad screen.
Wow Boox just squeaked by getting this out in 2024! This will be a boon for musicians looking to display sheet music in full size, the previous go-to device was the 2020 Max, which was getting a bit outdated. I opted to not wait and got the Go 10.3, and was pleasantly surprised that even at 36% less SA, it was very readable at a glance while playing piano. The only issue I've had is that my handwritten annotations need to be small on musical staff paper, needing to pinch zoom to write and then being fairly small on view. The Note Max would solve this. My only concern would be durability since this is a lot of area to support the thin glass substrate (they should have gone with plastic substrate), especially for travelling musicians who would put this in a bag. That would put me in the market for Boox's eventual upgrade to a Mobius-style screen in the future! Thanks for all your hard work and reviews
You can get a similar feel of the mobius, or of that of nomad more likely, by applying the feelwrite2 film over the go or note max and using the ceramic nib

I am an artist and I am looking for a compact e-ink tablet with a color screen so that I can constantly take it with me, easily hold it in one hand to draw and sketch a lot, and sometimes read PDFs. Can you please tell me what to choose? I'm thinking about the tab mini c or the note air 4c. I'm confused about a lot of models and I want to know which is the best option for my purposes right now.

Yeah, it seems ok so far. Let's hope that they can achieve what they have done with the battery on the Note Air 4 C! It has gone down 30% in my testing, and installing apps today.
Thanks Kit. I’ve just received the go 10.3 for PHD research. However, if the max turns out to have a decent battery I’ll send it back and get this instead. You’re reviews have been extremely helpful.
Test to see if the device can keep time. Turn off the Wi-Fi, Set the time manually, let it sit for a few hours and look at the time. Is it accurate? Set an alarm on the device, did it go off on time? Remember, some users don’t have or rely on Wi-Fi connections so let the device stand on its own feet and test the clock.
@@GeorgeYoung-b1s yeah, it's good, just like any other Boox. I mean OneNote benefits from colour in my opinion, but apart from that yeah, the extra space is great, and I'm going to enjoy having it in split screen mode.
Also, for the thorough review, please compare the Mobius screen to the glass screen, as durability/stress resistance has been a major concern on Reddit. Does the improved resolution justify the (worse) glass screen?
Seeing how big it is in the hand , moving it around etc. I'm glad I bit the bullet and ordered the Go 10.3. It has yet to arrive and was hoping this would release within my 30 day window for return of the Go in case I did really like that bigger screen (and felt the need for keyboard) but it is massive to carry around and use one handed which I'll do on occasion with the 10.3 . @tahirahmed33 I would disagree. If you'd check the existing posts, you'd see that Go10.3 is having Brighter background than the Other Carta1300 competitors (not speaking of Note Max, because I don't know yet), but A5X2 is Less bright than Go10.3, and it does have the Carta1300...
I returned the Note Air 3c because the writing experience was atrocious (and because it was so heavy). Does this device also feel like you are writing with a dry erase marker? Can it do multi-page transcription to text? What's the weight in hand feel like?
Yep, you can put any PDF on it. You can either add new pages for your working, or you can have a linked notebook in split view so you can always access it quickly from your textbook,

It's too bad that the reddit forums are chock full of complaints about the company and their lack of appropriate responses to many, many unhappy users. That alone causes me to steer clear of their tablets.
Kit, could you address the issues of data privacy and encryption with e-ink devices? My understanding is that only the Remarkable devices have on-device encryption -- for Boox and Supernote, critically, there may be encryption for data transfer, but not on-device. I'm in education, and for this reason I *know* that for my university, I would never use Boox or Supernote to touch anything from students, and that instantly cuts down on their utility. I don't know what British laws are on student data privacy, but I'd like to hear your take on this -- and, please, to push the major e-ink makers to add on-device encryption!
You expect such a costly device to have Android 14 loaded to keep up with GooglePlay Apps. Boox really should be like Apple - optimised software with regular updates. I’m amazed Apple hasn’t produced its own e-ink screen to rival the Carta 1300 and Apple’s optimised apps.
Finally here! I am above all excited to see how it might work with the keyboard folio also. However, for now, it would be great to know the input lag it has vs the go 10.3 when typing with a bluetooth keyboard. Also, how good is that writing feel and how snappy is the super refresh? It's really frustrating how long Boox is taking for this device to go live in the U.S. I will order one on day one because I love the Boox Go 10.3 so much and having that extra real estate on the screen will be so good. Especially for some PDFs that are a little hard to read because of small text.
It was on Amazon but sold out i think those are pre orders as he said the release date is Feb 2nd. I will keep checking amazon to see if I can have it as a preorder once I know the battery is decent with the bsr. It ships February but I saw the Amazon become available and then sold out again so ill keep checking.

It's US, I am not sure about EU. I am tempted to do the same to get the free case as it's $50 but I need that flexibility to return it within 30 days just in case any issues come up. I really don't like the boox customer service it's crazy how difficult it is to even get warranty services for device defects. I am too scared I won't be able to send it back if its defective.

I'm looking for best value e-ink tablet/screen for following purpose: 1) music sheets (pdf) 2) no frontlight required 3)big enough (preferably A4 size or close to it) 4) no other functions required. Main use: play music in direct sunlight. I was ready to order tab X , but note max seems to meet requirements even better :) Do you suggest any other large (>11inch) e-ink tablets which meet basic requirements : value for money, just display PDF, annotating /taking notes is optional for me. I am thinking of getting the Boox go 10.3, you have said it is very good. I need it for just reading academic papers and making notes on them, and the odd scribble of diagrams for methods. A function that lets me easily go back to highlighted parts or a paper would be useful. Is the go 10.3 best for this or is there another that might actually be better. Any input from anyone using any tablets would be really useful, thank you.
@@joshchillington4083 both that and the A5X2 would work very well. (Lots of eink tablets would TBH.) Between those decide if it's important to have android apps and if money is an important consideration. If you want an amazing writing feel go Manta.

@ I agree with you on the iPad for illustrations. But for sketching on the go and less eye fatigue i would like to stick with paper. But I wonder e ink can shorten the gap between the two mediums
@noobahoi, Yeah, from the "mm" perspective it looks like : (1) Note Max = 243mm (width) x 287.5mm (length) , while the (2) A4 Paper is 210mm (width) x 297mm (length). Kinda 10 mm (1 cm) difference, in length, which would prevent placing exactly two A5...

Excuse me, not exactly a comment on this specific video by itself and not exactly sure if you can do something about it, but I see the titles of your videos and their descriptions (badly) translated into my native language. There are English-speaking creators whose videos don’t feature this issue. Maybe there’s some box to untick or something? It’s a problem that’s been ongoing for a few years now (with various creators on the platform) and RUclips still doesn’t let users pick languages to not translate… (well, I’ve seen worse: shorts from people speaking my native language with audio replaced by robotic voice speaking English, and absolutely no way to pick the audio track on those…)
Bluetooth (and USB) keyboards worked fine with the last Onyx tablets. Even different languages. So it would probably be no problem. I don't know about Spacedesk, but I suppose if it is a 'normal' Android app it should work, too.
@@jasonaz7310 I did use the Firefox browser with a keyboard/mouse with the Tab X. It worked fine, just the CPU was sometimes a little bit slow (e.g. you had to wait 2 or 3 seconds until a complex web page was fully loaded). As the Note Max has at least 40 percent more speed with the CPU, I suppose it's quite useable. For a definitive result, you have to wait for the official reviews.
Hey i have been interested in buying a good e ink device and having it for a while but I still can not seem to find the best one. I have been looking at the tab mini c. I currently have the kindle scribe (1st edition). I am trying to have the versatility of an android device like samsung s5e but I also want color, writing capability, and of course it being an eink device. Is the tab mini c the best option now? Is there a black and white option that has google play access that is also good quality? Forgot to mention I want the size of the tab mini c since I like the small form factor especially since it has writing capability. Thanks!
One step forward... but two steps back. The Go 10.3 is perfect except for the size. This is 13.3 which fixes the size, but 1) BSR cannot be disabled and 2) the left bezel is H-U-G-E😢
I urgently need an e-ink device, mostly for text editing/using as external monitor. My general question: Note Max or Tab X? (I can still buy either) More specifically: 1. How does the screen compare to the Tab X in terms of FRAGILITY (major concern of most people!) and resolution? Do you think it might break too easily? Is the resolution significantly better (i.e. worth the tradeoff)? 2. How does battery life compare to Tab X? 3. How does usability as an external monitor (for text editing) compare to Tab X (resolution, speed etc.) 4. What would you say are the pros of the Tab X over the Note Max? No keleido 3 is much darker. I had the remarkable paper pro with gallery 3 and it's darker than note max and every bw device. Color devices are all darker than black and white devices. Once you see comparisons you'll see.
Yeah, I guess the Mobius screen and front light, but you are right it doesn't seem to make sense as a purchase now unless they discount it heavily. :-)
I wish BOOX would add a good-looking fountain/calligraphy pen to NeoReader. The existing one is terrible, and the brush pen is only a tiny bit better - my handwriting looks atrocious. I’d love a tool that writes like the ReMarkable calligraphy pen.

Were this a mobius panel, it would be an obvious choice for me. I don’t want to take notes on this, I have a5 binders and heavy paper for that, but I DO want to read, annotate, and fill out full size pdfs, submit assignments and typed documents through the Canvas app, and read music with the e-ink version of Mobile Sheets Pro. Super Refresh would likely make a big difference for quick page turns in music, including half turns(which requires a localized refresh) and links. I do have concern about longevity with that large, glass display on a thin metal chassis. If they updated the tab x with color and a mobius panel, that would likely be my choice.

No, unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Not having a front light is what makes it possible to have a much, much smaller gap between the ink in the display and the surface of the device. This is what makes the screen look so sharp compared to screens with a front light and it is how they manage to remove the gap between the pen and the ink on the screen. With a front light there'll always be a gap and you can not get a paperlike feel. You have to choose, a good looking display with a paperlike feel close to the pen, or a front light. The front light option already exist in other products so it makes sense to go with the other option on this one. Also, if you want a frontlight how about just turning on an external light source the same way people do when reading normal physical books.
@@FilipMolin well obviously if I need a front light it's because I cant shine a bright light in the environment like reading in dark mode at night in bed, airplane, etc.. the explanation makes sense but I really wish they had another option offering the front light, it's a key feature in many situations
Kit, thanks for the quick look. This and the Go 10.3 are the only Boox devices I would have any interest in. However, I can still effectively do academic work on the A5X and Manta so I can be patient for the A4X2 to make it's appearance. Too many workflow and UX tradeoffs for me if I went to Boox. Will definitely watch your review though.
Lovely, but as with all eink devices these days, it's strangely and excessively reflective. It's a horrible amount of glare. I thought the whole point of these was to make reading in the sun easy

Yeah. I want comparisons to things we intimately understand: A6, A5, US Letter, Composition (B5), and A4.

The palma is a very small device so I'm sure the contrast will look better do to smaller surface area?

Wow Boox just squeaked by getting this out in 2024! This will be a boon for musicians looking to display sheet music in full size, the previous go-to device was the 2020 Max, which was getting a bit outdated. I opted to not wait and got the Go 10.3, and was pleasantly surprised that even at 36% less SA, it was very readable at a glance while playing piano. The only issue I've had is that my handwritten annotations need to be small on musical staff paper, needing to pinch zoom to write and then being fairly small on view. The Note Max would solve this. My only concern would be durability since this is a lot of area to support the thin glass substrate (they should have gone with plastic substrate), especially for travelling musicians who would put this in a bag. That would put me in the market for Boox's eventual upgrade to a Mobius-style screen in the future! Thanks for all your hard work and reviews
You can get a similar feel of the mobius, or of that of nomad more likely, by applying the feelwrite2 film over the go or note max and using the ceramic nib

Hi, Kit! I really like your channel. E-ink devices are very interesting to me. I am an artist and I am looking for a compact e-ink tablet with a color screen so that I can constantly take it with me, easily hold it in one hand to draw and sketch a lot, and sometimes read PDFs. Can you please tell me what to choose? I'm thinking about the tab mini c or the note air 4c. I'm confused about a lot of models and I want to know which is the best option for my purposes right now.

It's not much, a little darker if anything. Both look good. carta 1300 should have 30% better contrast and screen response.
I’ll like to know what the battery life is like. With BSR and the same battery as the go 10.3, I’d be worried about how long it will last between charging

Yeah, it seems ok so far. Let's hope that they can achieve what they have done with the battery on the Note Air 4 C! It has gone down 30% in my testing, and installing apps today.

Test to see if the device can keep time. Turn off the Wi-Fi, Set the time manually, let it sit for a few hours and look at the time. Is it accurate? Set an alarm on the device, did it go off on time? Remember, some users don’t have or rely on Wi-Fi connections so let the device stand on its own feet and test the clock.
Sure, well, I usually leave my devices off wifi all day at work and the clock is usually ok. :-)

@@GeorgeYoung-b1s yeah, it's good, just like any other Boox. I mean OneNote benefits from colour in my opinion, but apart from that yeah, the extra space is great, and I'm going to enjoy having it in split screen mode.

Also, for the thorough review, please compare the Mobius screen to the glass screen, as durability/stress resistance has been a major concern on Reddit. Does the improved resolution justify the (worse) glass screen?
Seeing how big it is in the hand , moving it around etc. I'm glad I bit the bullet and ordered the Go 10.3. It has yet to arrive and was hoping this would release within my 30 day window for return of the Go in case I did really like that bigger screen (and felt the need for keyboard) but it is massive to carry around and use one handed which I'll do on occasion with the 10.3 . @tahirahmed33 I would disagree. If you'd check the existing posts, you'd see that Go10.3 is having Brighter background than the Other Carta1300 competitors (not speaking of Note Max, because I don't know yet), but A5X2 is Less bright than Go10.3, and it does have the Carta1300...

I returned the Note Air 3c because the writing experience was atrocious (and because it was so heavy). Does this device also feel like you are writing with a dry erase marker? Can it do multi-page transcription to text? What's the weight in hand feel like?

Yep, you can put any PDF on it. You can either add new pages for your working, or you can have a linked notebook in split view so you can always access it quickly from your textbook,

It's too bad that the reddit forums are chock full of complaints about the company and their lack of appropriate responses to many, many unhappy users. That alone causes me to steer clear of their tablets.
What would you recommend for mostly reading and not a lot of writing - Go 10.3 or this tablet? It feels a bit too big just for reading. Thanks!
Yeah, unless you need big PDFs, I think that the Go 10.3 will be a more comfortable reader.
Why is it still not for sale in US?
Kit, could you address the issues of data privacy and encryption with e-ink devices? My understanding is that only the Remarkable devices have on-device encryption -- for Boox and Supernote, critically, there may be encryption for data transfer, but not on-device. I'm in education, and for this reason I *know* that for my university, I would never use Boox or Supernote to touch anything from students, and that instantly cuts down on their utility. I don't know what British laws are on student data privacy, but I'd like to hear your take on this -- and, please, to push the major e-ink makers to add on-device encryption!

You expect such a costly device to have Android 14 loaded to keep up with GooglePlay Apps. Boox really should be like Apple - optimised software with regular updates. I’m amazed Apple hasn’t produced its own e-ink screen to rival the Carta 1300 and Apple’s optimised apps.
Would love to see an Apple e-ink rival. And yeah, I don't disagree about the Android version. :-)
Finally here! I am above all excited to see how it might work with the keyboard folio also. However, for now, it would be great to know the input lag it has vs the go 10.3 when typing with a bluetooth keyboard. Also, how good is that writing feel and how snappy is the super refresh? Many thanks, will be using your link in due time when they sort out the supply.
It's good, I am typing on it at the minute and enjoying the experience. I will do a side by side at some point the Super Refresh should help somewhat!

It's really frustrating how long Boox is taking for this device to go live in the U.S. I will order one on day one because I love the Boox Go 10.3 so much and having that extra real estate on the screen will be so good. Especially for some PDFs that are a little hard to read because of small text.
It was on Amazon but sold out i think those are pre orders as he said the release date is Feb 2nd. I will keep checking amazon to see if I can have it as a preorder once I know the battery is decent with the bsr. It ships February but I saw the Amazon become available and then sold out again so ill keep checking.

I wish I knew more about why the delay. It seems that there are some devices from some shops somewhere, it's not like a normal Boox launch. Hmmm.
It's US, I am not sure about EU. I am tempted to do the same to get the free case as it's $50 but I need that flexibility to return it within 30 days just in case any issues come up. I really don't like the boox customer service it's crazy how difficult it is to even get warranty services for device defects. I am too scared I won't be able to send it back if its defective.
This is the prefect upgrade to my five year old Boox Max 3, which is still going strong and is in use every day.

I'm looking for best value e-ink tablet/screen for following purpose: 1) music sheets (pdf) 2) no frontlight required 3)big enough (preferably A4 size or close to it) 4) no other functions required. Main use: play music in direct sunlight. I was ready to order tab X , but note max seems to meet requirements even better :)
Do you suggest any other large (>11inch) e-ink tablets which meet basic requirements : value for money, just display PDF, annotating /taking notes is optional for me. Kind regards.

I am thinking of getting the Boox go 10.3, you have said it is very good. I need it for just reading academic papers and making notes on them, and the odd scribble of diagrams for methods. A function that lets me easily go back to highlighted parts or a paper would be useful. Is the go 10.3 best for this or is there another that might actually be better. Any input from anyone using any tablets would be really useful, thank you.
@@joshchillington4083 both that and the A5X2 would work very well. (Lots of eink tablets would TBH.) Between those decide if it's important to have android apps and if money is an important consideration. If you want an amazing writing feel go Manta.

Lots of drawing on e-ink content coming soon. It is a good time! iPad is great, but it is nothing like paper, whereas e-ink has that certain something!
@ I agree with you on the iPad for illustrations. But for sketching on the go and less eye fatigue i would like to stick with paper. But I wonder e ink can shorten the gap between the two mediums
Actually, it's not really DIN A4 but 13.3" is a little bit smaller. So no 'real" two A5 pages.

Yeah, from the "mm" perspective it looks like : (1) Note Max = 243mm (width) x 287.5mm (length) , while the (2) A4 Paper is 210mm (width) x 297mm (length). Kinda 10 mm (1 cm) difference, in length, which would prevent placing exactly two A5...
I would like to know if it's good for alternating typing with handwriting in the same document like you would do in OneNote, also I follow math courses so I would value an equation recognition that turns them into latex or something.

Dear Kit, does this one have a better contrast than the b/w monitors by Boox and Dasung do? I’m not quite satisfied with their contrast.
I haven't used any Boox monitor unfortunately and none of the up to date Dasung ones.
What AI system is installed on the device? And do we know if the device data-mines your information?
It says OpenAI, it's the only option. I will be using the Chat GPT app in any case. Tech Tools did a great video about Boox security. Concluded it is not shipping data to China.

I am from Germany. Please test the battery and the work with it. I think I will love this one, but I have good info here in Germany. I want to read books with it and take notes about my reading. And it should replace all my old school papers for writing and taking notes.

Thanks so much for the review. I'd be super interested to see a test for pdfs, and especially for reading academic papers. If you could download a study or 2, and show us how the note Max or Go 10.3 perform, as we are quite a few academics in this community with this goal in mind :-)
Excuse me, not exactly a comment on this specific video by itself and not exactly sure if you can do something about it, but I see the titles of your videos and their descriptions (badly) translated into my native language. There are English-speaking creators whose videos don’t feature this issue. Maybe there’s some box to untick or something? It’s a problem that’s been ongoing for a few years now (with various creators on the platform) and RUclips still doesn’t let users pick languages to not translate… (well, I’ve seen worse: shorts from people speaking my native language with audio replaced by robotic voice speaking English, and absolutely no way to pick the audio track on those…)
Please check the weight: same thickness and battery of Go 10.3 but double the weight. Is it true ? Looks strange

Does it work with Spacedesk and a Bluetooth keyboard smoothly?
Bluetooth (and USB) keyboards worked fine with the last Onyx tablets. Even different languages. So it would probably be no problem. I don't know about Spacedesk, but I suppose if it is a 'normal' Android app it should work, too.
By work I mean if it is usable. I had a hacked Sony DPT-RP1 and spacedesk "worked" but it was so slow it really wasn't usable.
@@jasonaz7310 I did use the Firefox browser with a keyboard/mouse with the Tab X. It worked fine, just the CPU was sometimes a little bit slow (e.g. you had to wait 2 or 3 seconds until a complex web page was fully loaded).
As the Note Max has at least 40 percent more speed with the CPU, I suppose it's quite useable. For a definitive result, you have to wait for the official reviews.
Hey i have been interested in buying a good e ink device and having it for a while but I still can not seem to find the best one. I have been looking at the tab mini c. I currently have the kindle scribe (1st edition). I am trying to have the versatility of an android device like samsung s5e but I also want color, writing capability, and of course it being an eink device. Is the tab mini c the best option now? Is there a black and white option that has google play access that is also good quality? Forgot to mention I want the size of the tab mini c since I like the small form factor especially since it has writing capability. Thanks!

One step forward... but two steps back. The Go 10.3 is perfect except for the size. This is 13.3 which fixes the size, but 1) BSR cannot be disabled and 2) the left bezel is H-U-G-E😢
I urgently need an e-ink device, mostly for text editing/using as external monitor. My general question: Note Max or Tab X? (I can still buy either)
More specifically:
1. How does the screen compare to the Tab X in terms of FRAGILITY (major concern of most people!) and resolution? Do you think it might break too easily? Is the resolution significantly better (i.e. worth the tradeoff)?
2. How does battery life compare to Tab X?
3. How does usability as an external monitor (for text editing) compare to Tab X (resolution, speed etc.)
4. What would you say are the pros of the Tab X over the Note Max?
I’d really appreciate answers to these questions, as I’m sure I’m not the only one who is considering these two devices. Thanks for your work! 🙏🏻
The screen looks greish compared to its white margin maybe similar to kaleido3 looks to me
No keleido 3 is much darker. I had the remarkable paper pro with gallery 3 and it's darker than note max and every bw device. Color devices are all darker than black and white devices. Once you see comparisons you'll see.
It does look darker than the Go 10.3 somehow, I don't know why, it's not by much. But yeah the Kaleido 3 is much darker.

I wish BOOX would add a good-looking fountain/calligraphy pen to NeoReader. The existing one is terrible, and the brush pen is only a tiny bit better - my handwriting looks atrocious. I’d love a tool that writes like the ReMarkable calligraphy pen.

Were this a mobius panel, it would be an obvious choice for me. I don’t want to take notes on this, I have a5 binders and heavy paper for that, but I DO want to read, annotate, and fill out full size pdfs, submit assignments and typed documents through the Canvas app, and read music with the e-ink version of Mobile Sheets Pro. Super Refresh would likely make a big difference for quick page turns in music, including half turns(which requires a localized refresh) and links. I do have concern about longevity with that large, glass display on a thin metal chassis. If they updated the tab x with color and a mobius panel, that would likely be my choice.

No, unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Not having a front light is what makes it possible to have a much, much smaller gap between the ink in the display and the surface of the device. This is what makes the screen look so sharp compared to screens with a front light and it is how they manage to remove the gap between the pen and the ink on the screen. With a front light there'll always be a gap and you can not get a paperlike feel. You have to choose, a good looking display with a paperlike feel close to the pen, or a front light. The front light option already exist in other products so it makes sense to go with the other option on this one. Also, if you want a frontlight how about just turning on an external light source the same way people do when reading normal physical books.

@@FilipMolin well obviously if I need a front light it's because I cant shine a bright light in the environment like reading in dark mode at night in bed, airplane, etc.. the explanation makes sense but I really wish they had another option offering the front light, it's a key feature in many situations

Kit, thanks for the quick look. This and the Go 10.3 are the only Boox devices I would have any interest in. However, I can still effectively do academic work on the A5X and Manta so I can be patient for the A4X2 to make it's appearance. Too many workflow and UX tradeoffs for me if I went to Boox. Will definitely watch your review though.
carta 1300 might be the best looking black and white screen but latency while writing it is not,

Lovely, but as with all eink devices these days, it's strangely and excessively reflective. It's a horrible amount of glare. I thought the whole point of these was to make reading in the sun easy
I think that was my rushed lighting more than anything!
