Nice video! I’ve been ironing my husbands clothes for years. One game changer was adding homemade cornstarch into the mix. Really keeps the shirt super crisp👌🏻 And helps a lot to not allow stains to sit in the fabric A cup of distilled water + one tsp of cornstarch + 2 drops of essential oil. (Cornstarch stinks after a while) mix well pour in a spray bottle. Shake well before spraying & don’t over spray lol
Men don't iron because we find it either pointless, boring or both. When we do iron it's usually due to superficial external pressures, or because we're in the Military. However, ironing has two very interesting side effects; it helps to improve one's self-awareness, and it increases one's attention to detail--the latter being the reason for ironing in the military. If you find yourself in a situation when you need to iron, then make it as painless as possible. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that ironing has a calming, almost meditative, effect. You may even begin to look forward to ironing and may also start to view ironing in the same light as waxing your car on a Saturday. How to make it painless? If you're doing your own ironing, then chances are you are also doing your own washing. There are a few points that others mentioned and that the video overlooked or under-stressed that I wanted to share/highlight. - A good ironing job begins in the washer. Use the correct settings. - Don't overload the washer. Clothes need to move freely in the water. - Don't overload the dryer. Clothes need to tumble freely and expand. - Don't use a cool-down dryer cycle if you plan to iron. - Don't wait for the dryer to "buzz"; remove and hang shirts while they are HOT. (Optional: Rig the dryer to continue tumbling with door open while you remove shirts.) - If you forget, the dryer will stop and shirts will cool and wrinkle. Restart the dryer, and toss in a damp washcloth. - Set up ironing board in front of the TV, internet radio, or in garage if dryer is near your workbench. I've even ironed outside in back yard with my dog. - Begin ironing the back of the shirt on the square end of the ironing board. - Move shirt to tapered end of board to iron the front panels one at a time. - Iron collar, then end with ironing the sleeves. - For a sleeve top crease, pinch the under-arm seam where the seam meets the shirt. Lay the entire sleeve flat and starting at the seam, iron the sleeve working from the seam (under-arm) to the top (over-arm). (Note: Some sleeves are not oriented properly when set into the armhole. So, before you press the top crease, make sure the crease will align with the center of your shoulder). Hope this was helpful.
I haven't ironed in ages so this has been a lifesaver, it's my graduation ceremony tomorrow and I can't wear anything over the robe otherwise I wouldn't have bothered ironing. Thanks!
Boss asked me to iron my shirt or be ready to get less hours which led me here. learned to Ironed my dress shirt from this page and it did well. Cheers. Learn a new art.
A word to the wise: a) Buy a good, quality iron, not a cheap one. Black & Decker sells their classic version at a good price and it'll last for years IF you take care of it. I still have mine after 30 years of average use. If you're going to put water in your iron, try to use distilled water. Tap water, especially if you're in a hard water area, will leave mineral deposits inside your iron's reservoir. Over time, it'll ruin your iron's heating elements and gunk up the iron's vents making it useless. b) Keep your iron clean. If you use spray starch or any kind of fabric spray, it will tend to form a build-up on the bottom of your iron resulting in it dragging or sticking to the material. Distilled water in a spray bottled works well too. You can use tap water, but again, watch out for mineral deposits clogging up the steam vents. If it does need cleaning, mix a ⅓ vinegar. ⅔ water solution, pour it into your iron and let it set for an hour or so. Rinse it out two or three times - you'll see all the crud come out when you're done. c) Buy a tube of iron cleaner, relatively cheap and found next or near the spray starch at your supermarket. Use a small amount to wipe it down after every use, especially if you happen to do a lot of ironing. If you don't have any, keep it clean as best you can, but don't use anything that will stain material the next time you iron. • I learned how to iron shirts from the best: the US Marine Corps.
Coming from someone who has had to iron a shirt for just about every workday for 17 years; go from collar, yoke, body to sleeves. If you mess with sleeves and cuffs before the body, you'll just get wrinkles and have to re-iron. I also use a spray bottle to moisten the shirt rather than steam. In my experience, most iron's will start barfing out rusty water after a few months that stains your shirts.
This VERY thing just happened to me the other day. I have been using the steam function for some time now thinking it was better than using a spray bottle, but I think I'll be using the spray now.
My iron has a spray function built in. I just press down a button, and it sprays out water from the front (not from the bottom part). I really love that. I can hold down/straighten the shirt with my left hand, and iron AND spray with my right hand without putting the iron away.
For anyone reading that, the gunk coming out is due to minerals in our tap water. I never use tap water, I keep a gallon jug of distilled water next to my ironing board and don't have that problem.
i can't believe so many guys cannot iron a shirt or even tie a tie. My mom was the only woman in the house. It was my Dad and 2 brothers. She said she wanted to make sure me and my brother...learned how to cook...learn how to wash, iron, and fold clothes...and a little sewing if we had a rip on a garment. She used to tell us there is no guarantee you will get married...and if you do get married...there is no guarantee your wife will know how to do these things. One of the best skills I learned how to do.
My mom taught me all of that as well, including how to sew on a button, I just came for a refresher on ironing as it's been three years since I've had to wear dress clothes. I just got a new job where the code is business casual, when all my other jobs have had a specific uniform, or no dress code what so ever.
Wow I would have loved that! My parents were overbearing and then suddenly not, so I wasn't taught how to do anything they ever did for me and then suddenly expected to do them.
If you use the "throw it in the dryer because I don't have time" method, toss 2-4 ice cubes (depending on their size) in with the shirt. They will melt and create steam, helping to remove wrinkles better. Also, starch can be really rough on the fabric and shorten the life of the shirt. Use with caution.
I'm a woman and i'm only watching this because the guy i'm talking to was wearing a really wrinkled shirt and it made me cringe, my grandmother tried to show me this once and I didn't think i would really ever need it because not many things need to be ironed anymore, I was wrong.

My boyfriend asked me to help him with his work outfits and we got him dress shirts. Well I didn't have a dad and my mom was never home so now I'm here 😊
One more tip if you're in a hurry and going to resort to the drier: throw in two or three ice cubes, which will help steam out the wrinkles more in there. I've known people to put their clothes back through the final rinse cycle in the washer if they don't get to the drier quickly enough and their clothes wrinkle from sitting there in the drier too long, but they don't want to iron. Just throw in some ice cubes instead.
I didn't know that shirts could actually look good. Like many others here, I didn't get much time with my parents to learn basic life stuff. I'm thankful for a dad that taught me the really important stuff, but besides that, less common tid bits like this got completely missed.

Good overview. I would have emphasized the use of starch a little more and given tips on ironing box pleats and side pleats but I guess you can save that for the advanced ironing video =)
My ironing technique is pretty much as shown in this video, aside from the fact that I always iron shirts straight out of the washing machine. Advantages: no need for a steam iron, gets the shirt largely dry, without the need for a tumble-drier, ensures that you iron your shirts at once, and don't leave them, literally, hanging around for days.:
This is so true. If I have only one dress shirt to iron, I still take some other shirts and iron them too, even if they have been used only one time after I last iron them.
Do NOT tumble dry your shirts! Basically do not tumble dry at all. Tuble drying destroys the fabric of your shirt (especially on the collar and the cuffs) and any other clothing, it also adds traces of where the shirt (or trousers) have been bent which you can never get out again except you would redye the cloth. Always hang dry your shirts with a hanger. If you are short in time, either keep a shirt in the closet that is no-ironing fabric (and only use it for those days) or hang one of your shirts in your shower (on a hanger, of course). Shower really hot. The steam will clear out some of the wrinkles and your shirt stays fine.
Art of Manliness: Step 1 read the shirts label Me: Proceeds to read label only to realize it’s in Chinese “You have to understand what the fabric is or you can destroy it.” Me: 🙂 🤞🏽
Nice shirt. RUclips suggested I also see some older AoM vids like grilling burgers and steaks. Glad I did as grilling season is upon us. May I suggest a video on sharpening and honing kitchen knives to go along with those videos?
I just went into a rage fit trying to get my shirt to look nice. Next time i am going to find someplace i can pay to get it done. Or just buy a new shirt every time i need it.
Paul Kleinpeter I feel sorry for you...on the plus side, ironing isn't too bad when it goes right....it's when it goes bad 3 times in a row i get pissed ;)
Collars. Nope, go from outside to centre then from other outside to centre. Ironing from one side to the other pushed material to the one side and causes creases. Also, do sleeves before body of shirt. Doing body of shirt first means it will get wrinkled when you're doing the sleeves. Wrinkled sleeves are OK because they're going to be under your jacket sleeves.
I have been ironing since age 8 (now 64) and this comes the closest to any video I have watched on how to iron a man's dress shirt. I have given my son, now age 26, you APP and this video. I tried to teach him when he was 10, 12, 13 but he KNEW EVERYTHING a;ready and didn't pay attention. ROFL SOOOO, now that I am retired I trade MY ironing for his CASH...we called 6 dry cleaners and he pays ME what he would pay them OR he can iron them himself. WORKS FOR ME! Ironing is a skill ALL should learn!!!
I specifically married a man who was a manual labor worker to avoid this daunting task well long story longer he decided to switch careers into a more professional setting. I am 30 years old and today will be my first time ever even holding an iron. Why am I so nervous about this? 🤦🏻♀️😂 Thanks for the awesome and helpful video!! 😁
I'm good with ironing except for one thing: the pleats on the sleeve (near the cuff). I always mess those up somehow. They just don't seem to sit flat enough to just iron right over it. Any suggestions?
Don't iron them dry. Use a spray water bottle and give it a good misting - enough to dampen the material, but not soak it. It'll hold the fabric down long enough for you to iron over it. If you're using spray starch, use the water first to create the crease, iron it lightly, then use the spray starch to hold it down.
If you iron a lot use distilled water instead of tap water. The hard water from ur tap will eventually clog ur iron from mineral deposits. Mineral deposits can also end up on ur shirt.
I asked my mom how to iron since I want to wear a suit to cosplay as Hange for the anime convention this week. She said that it's my fault for getting the dress shirt wrinkly and ignored me... So now I'm here :D
I spend between $150 - $200 on each shirt, here's what I do to make my 5-year old shirts look brand new, hand wash your shirts and, after thoroughly rinsing them (I suggest some nice smelling fabric softener for the final soak), roll them in a towel (to dry). Unroll the towel, after about 10min, and iron the shirts straight away. Hang them up in your wardrobe, even if slightly damp. No sun damage, fresh smell, no shrinkage or deformity. The process takes some time, but whenever you need your shirt, it'll always be ready, ironed and smelling good.
I see a lot of people presume we are single men. I am married. My wife does the washing and I do the ironing. I always try and up my ironing skills. She doesn't wear things that need ironing all the time, I do everyday so it is only fair that I do that.
I iron the front of the shirt last. That way, there are fewer opportunities for subsequent wrinkles to occur during the ironing process to one of the most visible/noticeable areas.
Quick tip on the dryer. If you really want to snap out the wrinkles quick, throw in a damp hand towel or wash cloth (clean of course) and set the dryer on the highest heat. Wait a few minutes for the dryer to heat up, then throw in the shirt for a 2-5 minutes. The steam coming of the drying hand towel will help loosen the wrinkles on the shirt. Make sure you take the shirt out immediately before the dryer can stop and give it a good snap or two. Ta-dah. Works like a charm. Good for chinos too.
Wow! The next video on my thread said to do the first two steps completely opposite. No water in iron and turn iron to highest setting. Different strokes for different folks!
Thanks! Could never figure out sleeves. I'm not single but have been doing my own laundry for 30 years. My wife of 35 years is from the Philippines. She Is way better looking than I guy like me deserves but her family is from a remote village and she grew up doing laundry at the river. She has been in the states for forty years but hasn't quite gotten the hang of clothes sorting. When all my tighty-whities came out pink one day I raised hell. Been doing my own laundry ever since. Filipina's are wonderful loyal wives but they don't take criticism very well and they are very good with a bolo. I figured that early. Now I am very happy and still have all my appendages.
Sleeves: Lay the sleeve flat with the front of the shirt down. Adjust the sleeve so that the entire flat felled seam is upright and in a perfect line along the bottom. Any extra fabric appearing below the seam needs to be adjusted to the front as the sleeve is probably twisted and so will your crease. Start from the bottom of the seam at the arm pit and iron up toward the shoulder. From here you can iron a crease into the yoke to just under the collar. Work from the shoulder to the cuff always with your iron starting at the seam first. If you find that the crease you're creating is not lining up with the crease that exists in the shirt, dampen the section with a mist bottle and override the incorrect, pre-existing crease. Using the flat felled seam as a guide will ensure that your creases are sharp and reliable every time.
i would recommend starting on the back of the shirt, sleeves, collar than front. This way you wont make creases on the ironed parts while flipping shirt over and laying it down to do other parts of it. If there is creases done then at least it will be in the back where there will always be creases due to sitting down and stuff.
I always iron the collar & yoke/shoulders first, then sleeves, then front & back; and I press in the back pleat starting at top and going about 1/2 - 2/3 way down letting it fade out rather than press all the way to the hem.
I didn't grow up with a dad, so I never learned how to do basic things. Now RUclips is my dad.

shackledwithfreedom wow! Takes me 10 minutes!! O.o
EXACTLY and then it still looks like garbage
Ironing frustrates the shit out of me lol
perfectionist I see! I can relate.
Just hang them out of the drier. They are already self ironed out.
Good video. Ironing everything in batches is a great time saver.
This is so true. If I have only one dress shirt to iron, I still take some other shirts and iron them too, even if they have been used only one time after I last iron them.
My mum never let me near the iron when I asked her so I used this video when she wasn't at home, thanks a ton 💪🏾💪🏾
"Art of Manliness" I guess when I was born I didn't get the shirt ironing gene
same
Good day 😊 Im a public school teacher in the Philippines. Can I use your video for my lesson to my students? Thank you and more power.
I should start ironing right now. I'm on youtube watching ironing videos instead... that's how much I hate ironing!! 😩
Hello BellaXO I watched this and then went to sleep. Watching people iron makes me tired.
This is awsome - teaching men how do things - i never had a male role model so this is great for guys like me who never learned these skills.
I need to iron my boyfriends shirts, this was very helpful. Thank you!
I mean, since you’re already on the job, what’s five more shirts...weekly? As in my shirts.
I've watched a couple of these videos and what I've learned is I need to find a cheap dry cleaner
Great advice! I've been dying to see a video like this.
Art of Manliness: Step 1 read the shirts label
Me: Proceeds to read label only to realize it’s in Chinese
“You have to understand what the fabric is or you can destroy it.”
Me: 🙂
🤞🏽
Nice shirt.
RUclips suggested I also see some older AoM vids like grilling burgers and steaks.
Glad I did as grilling season is upon us.
May I suggest a video on sharpening and honing kitchen knives to go along with those videos?
The front part of the shirt needs to be last one to iron, not the first =S
Old videos gives the best tutorials
I just went into a rage fit trying to get my shirt to look nice. Next time i am going to find someplace i can pay to get it done. Or just buy a new shirt every time i need it.
Zeus Blue
I bought a brand new shirt and it needed ironing.
Paul Kleinpeter
I feel sorry for you...on the plus side, ironing isn't too bad when it goes right....it's when it goes bad 3 times in a row i get pissed ;)
Paul. This is why suicide is a thing.
im glad youtube is here for the kids of all the moms and dads that never taught us the essentials
You just saved my life
Oh I love it! I love the practical tips at the end... If you are short of time... If you are SERIOUSLY short on time...
+AJ I'd write more, but I've got a shirt to iron
What lack of self-esteem must one have to become someone else‘s personal Butler
I have been ironing since age 8 (now 64) and this comes the closest to any video I have watched on how to iron a man's dress shirt. I have given my son, now age 26, you APP and this video. I tried to teach him when he was 10, 12, 13 but he KNEW EVERYTHING a;ready and didn't pay attention. ROFL
SOOOO, now that I am retired I trade MY ironing for his CASH...we called 6 dry cleaners and he pays ME what he would pay them OR he can iron them himself. WORKS FOR ME! Ironing is a skill ALL should learn!!!
In high school I ironed every single day lol. What happened?
thanks man i have homecoming tomorrow and i needed someone to teach me how to iron thank you so much
AoM, you saved my arse once again!
Matias Alric Glad to be of service.
then you sit at a desk/ride the train and it is wrinkled horrendously again
Nice to see all the guys ironing their clothes. I’m just here trying to surprise my dad while he’s at work with fresh clothes
I have now become iron man
Has a Jamaican I learn to Iron my shirt in 4th grade I just came to read the comment to see how everyone else do
How come nobody taught me this!
Annalise Trite
Because you went to a public school just like the other 95% of us.
crazynakedpandas I went to private schools from K-12th and currently a sophomore at a private college. but still, never learned to iron my clothing.
great video. exactly what i was looking for. the background music was great too
Hey, can you do "HOW TO IRON MUSTACHE LIKE A MAN"
Thanks for helping me out. Looked great before work!
Hey, women have dress shirts as well
Amen 2 that sister
+Tracey Mensah amen
women should wear dresses and skirts and look sexy. what is the fashion now that women are encouraged to look masculine? ridiculous
guest a woman can be sexy with a shirt, deal with it.
Then search for a RUclips video for you gals then.
Saved me a headache tonight. Thanks Art of Manliness.
Ironing movements seem a little too fast in this vid. ;)
Im here cz my boyfriend just asked me to iron his shirt and I've never done it before lmao thank God for RUclips! !
Surely the answer is: get your wife to do it...
Because not being able to dress yourself is the epitome of manliness.
Being unable to recognise the difference between putting clothes on and ironing them is horrifically unmanly.
Dark Day Ministries Being a grown man who depends on their wife to do even the most trivial tasks, like ironing a shirt, is immensely unmanly.
Explain...
We have a word for male people who can't do their own laundry or clean their own homes: boys.
Now how do I iron out the wrinkles on my face to get the chicks?
Avoid inflammatory foods, and get proper sleep.
Thqnk you. I needed this for my navy suit for war.
I learned nothing from this video
Took me a long time to find this video, thanks Art of manliness
I think I'll just take it to the cleaners.
If you iron a lot use distilled water instead of tap water. The hard water from ur tap will eventually clog ur iron from mineral deposits. Mineral deposits can also end up on ur shirt.
Thanks for the tip!
I think I messed up. The iron somehow ended up my ass.
This is correct.
Thanks for the video. It really helped us out on a buddy's wedding day!
The yokes the hardest part and you just blew over that!
I asked my mom how to iron since I want to wear a suit to cosplay as Hange for the anime convention this week. She said that it's my fault for getting the dress shirt wrinkly and ignored me... So now I'm here :D
Tomorrow is my dad's presentation so I'm here because I want dad to look great tomorrow.
Kanchan Nirgude that’s sweet actually. I’m sure it went well!
Thank you so very much +ArtofManliness!!! You saved my life!
Warm = Clean
Wow! The next video on my thread said to do the first two steps completely opposite. No water in iron and turn iron to highest setting. Different strokes for different folks!
My mum asked me to iron 2 shirts while she went to work. It's been 2 hours and I'm here now.
Who’re watching this video in 2020? I don’t know how to iron my pants so this video helps me a lot. Thanks!
Sleeves:
Lay the sleeve flat with the front of the shirt down.
Instructions unclear, played league of legends and burned the house down after my defeat
hey guy, what's the name and type of your iron ? I really needs to buy one.. is very nice
i would recommend starting on the back of the shirt, sleeves, collar than front. This way you wont make creases on the ironed parts while flipping shirt over and laying it down to do other parts of it. If there is creases done then at least it will be in the back where there will always be creases due to sitting down and stuff.
mportklr Very good idea. I want to learn from you. My whatspp is +18025933725
+Tan Catherine wtf u putting ur whatsapp
I always iron the collar & yoke/shoulders first, then sleeves, then front & back; and I press in the back pleat starting at top and going about 1/2 - 2/3 way down letting it fade out rather than press all the way to the hem.
Thank you, works great and you get better after doing a few.
👏👏👏👏
