I'm studying church history at FAU in Erlangen. This is entertaining but a bit sensationalistic, as if the journalist has discovered something that the scholars did not know. I want to clear up some things. Firstly, the theologians, church historians and archaeologists are not all agreed about the extent of Constantine's so-called conversion, which was described by the church father Eusebius in a clearly biased manner. We simply do not have unbiased written accounts from this period! We can, however, look at the laws he created, and his actions. Constantine did make a lot of laws regarding the churches, donated huge sums of money to build churches, outlawed crucifixion and gladiator death matches, granted all Romans freedom of religion and overall was one of the best emperors. However, he also killed his wife and son, and did not officially become a Christian till just before his death.
He did not "convert the whole Roman world" to Christianity, but merely legalized and promoted it. Actually, he was unpopular among the pagans because he put so many Christians in high places. There were many religions in the Roman Empire, some were illegal (like the cult of Dionysus), but Constantine legalized Christianity and returned the goods plundered by previous emperors. Christianity did not officially become a state religion until the reign of Theodosius at the end of the century.
Constantine also did not "create" Christianity, as some suppose. He did make Dies Sol Invictus (Day of the sun) an official holiday for all Romans, but the Christians had been meeting on Sundays for a long time, so this created a syncretized form of Christianity. Most Christians were converted heathens, so they kept many of their cultural practices and bit by bit adapted them to their "new faith", including adding 25 December, birthday of Mithras, to the Christian calendar as Jesus' birthday. Early Christian theologians such as Justin Martyr and Eusebius saw Mithraism as a satanic counterfeit of Christianity and preached against this heathen cult. Sadly, Constantine was antisemitic towards Jews (mainly due to the political revolts by Jews), and brought Christianity further from its Jewish roots. He also brought some shady theology into it, as well, like the idea that God wanted him to be emperor (otherwise, why did he win the battle). This kind of deterministic triumphalism has afflicted Western Christianity ever since.
There really is very little that Yeshua shares with Mithras or Mithraic relgion, except for the imagery (rays of light), the concept of a god having a son (which all Roman religions had) and some pagan rituals which were kept and "christianized" like Christmas. The video talks about Mithras shedding the "eternal blood" of the bull being similar to Jesus shedding his own blood. Well, that really is a stretch. All pagan religions killed animals and shed their blood. Guess which other religion did this? Judaism. Bulls and sheep were killed and the blood "saved" the people from their sins. Most importantly, during Passover, the blood of the lamb saved the people. This is why St. Paul, a Jew, describes Yeshua as a lamb. Eating a communal meal was also a part of Roman paganism (the meat and wine was first offered to their gods). Jewish Christians understood the Eucharist as a form of the Passover Last Supper, but the pagan Christians related it to their background. So, in short, if Mithraism shared some compoenents with Christian rituals, it's because some rituals (prayers, offerings, common meals, words like "eternal", "sacrifice", "immortal", "resurrection") are found in MANY religions, and that Hellenistic Roman culture shared certain elements, including artistic depictions and cultural themes.

    ABSOLUTE NONSENSE!!!
The guy deliberately ignores the most important historical facts ,and distorts others.
    1. St.Constantine did not turn to the Christian Faith after his vision.
He was brought up by his Greek and Christian mother Helen.
    2. Christians in Western Europe where he ruled, were a tiny small minority.
He had no reason to present himself as a fervent supporter of this religion, as he would probably be hated by his army and his subjects.
    3. The arch of Constantine was decorated by fragments of previous destroyed arches.
Therefore there are no secret symbolic meanings , apart from the obvious point that Constantine was a victorious and promising monarch.
The supposed Mithra priests statues , are actually Persian officers in chuckles.
    4. The overwhelming majority of the empire's population were pagans.
Rome had an official state religion ,the one of the Invincible Sun, an Constantine as emperor ,was Pontifex Maximus.
There was no way he could declare his Christian faith openly without causing massive reaction or even rebellion.
Actually he was secretly baptised at the palace in Constantinople, shortly before his death.
He did though something great :
He transferred the Capital = the heart of the empire ,from Old pagan Rome, to New Rome ( Constantinople),within a Greek and Christian culture.
    5. Similarities between Mithra and Jesus Christ, are tottaly fictitious, and were claimed by dome 19th century anti Christian scholars , without the slightest historical evidence.
    6. Constantine was so eager to mix up religions ,that he called the 1st Ecumenical Council, with the participation of over 300 bishops, in order to clarify the doctrines of the Christian Faith.
    7. A church in Rome was constructed upon a Mithra temple.
    What a discovery!!!
Hundreds of Churches were constructed upon pagan temples.
8.The Nativity was placed on December 25 ,when pagan feasts were held.
That was known right from the beginning, and it was done deliberately, so that it would supplant Roman Saturnalia.
9.The new capital of the empire was named New Rome .
It was the people ,that gave gradually the name Constantinople to the City.
    10. The column in the square of Beyaziyt mosque, was topped by Theodosius statue ,not Constantine's ,therefore it was called forum of Theodosios.
    11. Ravena mosaics were constructed 200 years after Constantine.
    12. Constantine couldn't be buried in Holly Apostoles church, as this was built by Justinian 200 years later, and contained real relics of the 12 Apostoles.

One of the best comments on this feed and the only thing I question is #1? I thought Constaintine converted to Christianity much later in life even after the council of nicaea? It seems like he took the opportunity to use the religion for conquest purposes to me. (My personal opinion, you can have your own) Remember he was only a human being like you and me, flawed in more ways than we know. Also, one of the biggest beefs I have with the council of nicaea is that no females were involved or allowed in the picking of the books that went into the bible. I am still baffled to this day that females can be a part of Christianity. The religion that steals from others and claims innocence.

Christianity was alive way before his time. He did declared that all religions would be tolerated in the Roman Empire. Constantine ended the vicious persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire. Constantine was the first in human history to wage war using the name of Christ.
He did not identify himself as “Christian” until he was 40 years old, and he was baptized only before his imminent death at 65.
Constantine wisely perceived that the Catholic church would glue together his fragile Empire, and he fought heretical movements (Arianism) that can jeopardize the unity of the Church or the unity of the Empire. hence He was made a member of in The Council of Nicaea by the Catholic church.

An interesting mix of historical perspectives and exaggerated speculations. It's pretty clear that Constantine's Milvian Bridge story is at the very least his own revisionist perspective, years later, told in the company of Christian clergy and almost certainly tailored to that audience. I can also imagine him equating Mithras and Jesus Christ, religiously, and reimagining and reinterpreting what he'd experienced years earlier. He clearly wasn't actually Christian until later in his life, and by most accounts, Constantine didn't convert to Christianity formally until the time of his death. But much of the other speculations in this video - of Constantine seeing himself as divine and possibly the replacement of Jesus is just typical Roman Imperial stuff. All the Roman emperors either actively sought to promote the idea of their own divinity or had it done anyways by the populace (remember Vespasian's comment to his son Titus as he was dying - wryly remarking that he felt like he was 'becoming a God'?). So the video's portrayal of this aspect as somehow unique to Constantine - that he was uniquely self-centered among the Emperors in seeing himself as Godlike - can't be taken seriously. That's what they all did. All-in-all though quite interesting, particularly the detailed analysis by the professional guests of the arch and other artwork and archeological findings.

@@islamsalaam1129 Honestly it is the truth... I do not expect a ruler of a country to be fully devoted to one faith, especially in a free-religion state like Rome back in those days... The Legend of Constantine is a white lie, as I am sure he baptized at the end of his life, which is rather a semi-common tradition to those that are not full Christians...
My point is *not everything is black and white* ... An emperor cannot act as Queen E the first or her sister Mary, especially in a country with Mithran elites and poor (to middle) christians... At that time Christianity is on the rise and on parr with Mithra elites, I doubt he can stay at his seat by being full Christian... It would seem that the Roman Empire was struggling to survive as a viable state at the time Emperor Constantine decided to find a way to shore up a broken, decadent empire.
After all, the Romans had spent a lot of time trying to wipe out Christianity, by means of: torture; imprisonment; mass murder; repression of communal worship, etc. At the end of this effort, the faith was actually growing, instead of being destroyed.
Certainly, Constantine must have thought, 'if you can't beat them, join them.' Here was a community of people who had defied all the odds, while maintaining their morals, and other values, something lacking in Imperial Rome at this time. Simply incorporate this strong community into the weakening Roman culture by means of the law, and Rome would last forever. Or, at least, that was how the story should have gone.

There is so much information not mentioned here. Like how Constantine’s Mother was a full blow Christian and traveled to the Holy land relic hunting and establishing churches along the way.
The vision Constantine saw wasn’t the cross at all but rather Chi-Rho. “In this sign, conquer.”
It is quite common for Roman Emperors to build giant statues of themselves or more accurately steal them from old emperors and have the faces changed. It’s also common practice to have yourself deified as an emperor.
What these “historians” should be looking at is the written trail that was left by the man to see what faith he held. In that you read of a man that was trying to unify the church and stop in fighting. He called the first Council of Nicaea to help deliberate with the bishops of the day and help mend rifts that came about due to differences in teachings. A megalomaniac wouldn’t concern himself with such things. He himself had the word “consubstantial” added to the Creed that settled the matter of Jesus and God being of the same material.
Let us not forget that he wrote several laws that gave Christians freedom to worship openly and returned lands and buildings that were taken from Christian churches and citizens.
This program is pure garbage with as much historical bases as an Inquirer periodical has in facts. It does not site historical documents and cherry picks information to represent its own views and lead the ignorant astray. Do some reading in actual books. You’ll see that Constantine did a lot of work for the good of the church and that he was a Christian.

Fascinating story; regardless of Constantine's alterations to early Christianity, it's hard to imagine Christianity becoming a widespread world religion without his support or without the embrace of the Roman Empire for that matter. Even though Constantine DID NOT make Christianity the official religion of Rome, he set the tone of tolerance to Christianity, which only later would become the official religion. Let us just imagine if Rome had embraced Judaism, Zoroastrism or any other Religion as their official credo. The world would certainly be very different. It was through Roman conquest that Christianity spread throughout Pagan Europe, and later it was through Christian European conquest that Christianity would spread throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia and pretty much everywhere.

The Mithraic religion highlighted the movement of the Sun across the elliptical. The movement
from the constellation of the Bull ( Taurus) to the constellation of the Ram ( Aries) took place at about 2,100 bc. Prior to that Spring commenced in the constellation of Taurus for about 4200 Bc to 2100 bc. The fact that Mithraism Was a secret and elitist religion is not because it was different from the Roman religion per se , but it added an esoteric spin to the Roman Greco religion, particularly from
About 200BC , because the constellation of Aries matched the sign of Aries due to the precession of the equinox.
In Persia, where the magi originated from .. the lamb was known as the Ram.. so the author gets it wrong here .. the symbolism of the cap was from the Zoroastrian faith, where it is mandatory for Zoroastrians to wear a cap. This practice Was adopted by the Jews and Muslims later. The Mitraic religion is influenced Mitra of the Indo - Zoroastrian faith.
Going back to Astronomy , sign of Aries , which is symbolised by the Sun bcoz Sun reaches it zenith or exhalation point in Aries and that explains the reference to Mithras as the Sun God.
No doubt, Constantine had motives in combining Christianity with the Mithraism and this can be seen by the church adopting Easter corresponding to Sun’s move into Spring
Equinox which coincided with so called the rite of spring celebrations which later on became Easter. The’s sun movement into Capricorn or the winter solstice on 22nd December was adopted as the birthdate of Jesus to make it easier to combine the Greco Roman customs into Christianity.

God is holy and therefore inevitably always absolutely RIGHTEOUS! So God can never be merciful, gracious, because grace is not justice and therefore is wrong! A holy God can only be holy if he NEVER does wrong !! So FACT is without Jesus his SACRIFICE out of love for us we would all be lost! Only YHWH is not lying when he says he is HOLY and MERCIFUL !! Who is YHWH equal? EXACTLY NO ONE !!
JESUS gave himself as a sin offering !! A PURE LIFE FOR A LIFE !! Because we have to be holy = without guilt otherwise God will judge us FAIR and RIGHT !! Jesus is YHWH and thus the Creator of EVERYTHING and thus has the weight to wash the whole creation clean with these pure lives (BLOOD) !! God bless you

Does he not judge righteously! he would judge injustice and he would be UNHOLY !! Grace is not fair because it is a GIFT that you do not deserve! If you had earned it, it would not be GRACE but JUSTICE !! So a HOLY GOD cannot be MERCYFUL when he is JUDGING !! So FACT is without JESUS HIS SACRIFICE, it doesn't work !!
So logically and rationally seen is a fact if Jesus did not die for the sins of the world and is not God then it does not work! !! Just like in Islam !! IS ALLAH a LIAR when he says he is the RIGHT JUDGE (which he must be if he is HOLY) ??? Or is ALLAH a LIAR when he says he's MERCIFUL !!!!

The first narrative about the Milivan bridge is by Lactantius, not by Eusebius. A medallion was issued at Ticinum in 315 AD which shows Constantine wearing a helmet emblazoned with the Christian Chi Rho symbol and coins issued at Siscia in 317/318 AD repeat the image. So the Christian symbols were used by Constantine himself soon after the battle. All the rest is one big protestant conspiracy theory without any hint scientific truth or reason.

The arch is irrelevant anyway. It was commissioned by the Senate as a gift for Constantine, to be built by his 10 year anniversary for him to visit Rome. Constantine didn't rule from Rome ever, and only visited twice as emperor. He ruled from Mediolanum(Milan) and Augusta Treverorum(Trier), and several cities in Illyricum and elsewhere. We don't know if Constantine had any thing to do with the arch's design. It's entirely made of spolia. Even the sculptural relief band going around the monument commonly attributed to Constantine's time may be spolia from a monument begun by Probus or Carus.
All the Tetrarchs did this. The only story being told on Constantine's arch... Is being told through the use of older sculptures from previous emperors' monuments. I can't believe the doc doesn't even mention this. It must be the only look into the arch that doesn't immediately go into the history of the sculptures and which emperors commissioned them(Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, etc).
Other than that, it's a very impressive arch, and the inscription is obviously from Constantine's day, but written by the Senate. If people want some evidence of Constantine's conversion, the fact that he spurned Jupiter Capitolinus in his triumph, a totally unprecedented and bizarre move, and the fact that he began giving his children a Christian education at this time, and began closing certain pagan temples, etc.

The Council of Nicaea, which OFFICIALLY established Jesus as God for the first time in Christianity, was organized by a Roman emperor named Constantine, who was a pagan and not a Christian, and was only baptized shortly before his death.
    1. He chose which priests and churches would be invited, thereby arranging the "majority" and "minority" positions at the Council of Nicaea.
    2. Nicaea, Anatolia, was an area where the majority of the population opposed Arianism, the doctrine that believed Jesus was not God.
Thus, it is clear that Constantine did not need to be actively involved in the council, as the participants had already been "selected," the environment was "arranged," and therefore the outcome of the voting decisions was likely predictable by Constantine.

In their translation of the Bible when you read the Gospels, they wrote about Yeshua going to Yerushalaim: "for the feast of the jews". Yeshua was a jew, and his followers were jews. When they wrote about it, they must have written the name of the Feast of Yehovah they were to celebrate (They had several). They would not refer to themselves as "the jews". Also when they mention the pharisees, they say "the jews". True Christianity started with jewish believers of Yeshua ha Masiach, then God manifested to the gentiles as well and of both He made one group.
It is clear that people who were NOT jews nor christians altered the Scriptures, to portray the "jews" as evil, and many jew believers were still jews! Believing in their Mesiah did non strip them of their jewishness.

It might've been due to her influence that, despite being a megalomaniacal pagan at heart, he built gigantic basilicas for the Christian faith, called ecumenical councils to find an accord between the various churches, to codify the scriptures, but did nothing to perpetuate Mithraism or the cult of Apollo. The one interesting revelation in this documentary was the relation of the Arch vis-a-vis the colossal statue of the sun god. Simcha would be so much more convincing if he were either really clean-shaven or sported a thick well-kempt beard, but somehow he seems to think that going around with a 5 o'clock shadow -- not exactly a "philosopher's beard" -- is, like, cool and chic.

It is said that Constantine didn't like having to visit all the most popular gods at their shrines to make offerings. It was easier for him to have just one inclusive god that he had to appease. He still made offerings to the Roman and Greek god Apollo, who was connected with many things, including the sun, and was one of the most popular pagan gods among the elite and educated in the Roman Empire. Remember that most of the Bible is written or translated in Greek.
Besides, many of his soldiers already believed in the god Mithras, and Zoroastrian mysteries from Persia are based on Mithraism. Mithraism was a rival to early Christianity. Mithraists were subject to persecution by the Christians, and soon died out. I wonder how many Mithra saints and martyrs there would be today if it had survived?

The Arch of Constantine is a stark apocalypse of the emperor's true stance... I've actually read of this theory before, and it makes perfect sense. It was his mother Helena, that went to the Holy Land looking for the Cross of Jesus, and built the Church of The Holy Sepulchre, where she believed she had found the actual cross. Also when disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, the only divine entity in that prayer was God/Abba Father) and all the other things that Catholics do, is straight up idolatory and not what Bible asks us to do. Also, the biggest turn off for me was when Catholics invaded Mayans, incinerated them alive and destroyed the ancient knowledge obtained over the years without even looking what was in there (probably some haven't been destroyed and kept in Vatican's library, who knows). I don't know how many people this Catholic Church has killed whose cries have been lost in history. Point is, if you actually want to worship someone, worship Abba Father/Creator/God. So we go looking for Jesus in the old testament (typological reading) and go looking for the church
This is done by looking at
      - Eve, the mother of all living
      - The ark of the covenant, keeping the covenant
      - The queen mother
      - Mary, mother of the saviour
      - The woman in the war in heaven

Which is stated in the Nicene creed

The reason why catholics venerate Mary so highly is that she is the perfection and personification of the church. Both prophetically through scripture and graciously in heaven sending forth graces to all who ask.

Christians weren't persecuted continuously between the 1st century and the 4th century (when Constantine ruled). The were long periods when Christians lived in peace, so it makes sense that there were Christian soldiers in the Roman army. Also, Constantine didn't convert the Roman Empire, he issued an order that Christians not be persecuted (Edict of Milan in 313). He himself didn't convert until 337 when he knew he was dying.
Also, there's no evidence that Mithras worshippers believed that Mithras died and was resurrected. It's disputed that they considered December 25 to be Mithras' birthday. It's possible that Constantine believed in both Christianity and Mithraism, because many Romans didn't consider religions to be mutually exclusive and he probably wasn't interested in the fine points of Christian theology. Syncretism (combining and assimilating different beliefs and gods) was widespread in the Roman Empire.
