@@scanida5070 Was only half the country (west/east) also thats still funding and the country was rebuild with foreign money so....
@@eraldorh A country literally bombed to bits...France and Britain weren‘t hit as hard. The marshall aid was only a bump start. The clever governing of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and minister for the economy Ludwig Erhardt brought West Germany back on track. The combination of Capitalism and Socialism let to a very attractive market, a market which was flexible and competitive yet still healthy and fair towards the common worker. This caused Germany‘s economy to surge. The GDP went up by 90%, investment by 110% and unemployment went down to 0.9%. This is the already mentioned Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) and this was the key factor which brought Germany back on track. Also, the Mittelstand helped to fuel the economy. Mittelstand means essentially small/medium sized family owned businesses which often strive more towards quality (made in Germany) instead of quantity. Due to their size and often specific fields, they were difficult to get out of business and so only fuelled the economy even more. 50% of Germany’s economy is still made up by the Mittelstand. The Marshall aid was only a small part of Germany‘s economic success.
To be fair, they keep doing it to themselves, I'd rather the stability we have in the UK, than a flip flop economy leading to crazy extremes (even if the decline in the UK hurts man). Give us a few years out of the EU and I think we'll overtake Germany once again ;) I expect explosive growth actually, but we will decline at first, the growth will lead to many other nations becoming envious and leaving the EU as well.
I wouldn't count on China maintaining their trajectory, the CCP are not long for this world, dictatorships never last/are not stable, they only have had the growth they've had because they adopted aspects of the free market and capitalism and are leeching off the West (particularly the USA), but the people will eventually want the freedom the West has enjoyed for centuries. I didn't realise Japan had declined so much btw. The USA are about to have some crazy inflation, but with a changing of leadership ;) they will cement their place as the dominant power for at least a few more decades.
The British Empire should be around double the GDP at the beginning btw, they missed out our colonies...
Seeing Poland, Sweden and Belgium pop up was cool. China's growth and USA's dominance are just absolutely insane
@Saharat Nakhon-Em Norway sell oil
The USA was in a massively beneficial position throughout the 20th century. They were in a position such that they could participate in both world wars without having their economy complete shat on. The US could just ramp up its industrial capacity without concern for having tanks blitzkrieg across it. That, plus having a capitalist economic system which is just objectively better than what most other countries had at the time, and having access to vast reserves of space and natural resources, contributed to US dominance of the global economy. Even today, the United States still comprises about a quarter of the global economy and is staying steady there with relatively stable growth, covid being in the long term only a minor speed bump

@@machinist_matt Most of the machinery and industry that helped Germany rebuild so fast was actually still intact after the war, around 60-80%, because it was brought underground at the beginning of the war. Also it wasn't dismantled and shipped off to the allies because they didn't want to make the mistake they did after WW1 again (last part only applies to the BRD, the GDR was exploited by the soviet union).
@Cheeto The allies ignored their own treaties too, for example the founding of the Bundeswehr (army of the BRD) was supported by the NATO.
Germany is actually really impressive, even when they fall they quickly get back up and goes at it again hard.
I would be interesting to see how strong Germany would be with the 1914 borders
that's because they signed an armistice right when the allies put a foot on their land to avoid having it destroyed in ww1, promising to pay money to compensate. Meanwhile 1/3rd of France and Belgium was in ruins and the peoples necessary to rebuild it were dead or injured. Then one decade later then even cut the payments they were supposed to make with no compensation, leaving countries that suffered from their rampage like Belgium and France in the dust. And then re-invaded them one decade later.
@@zefyrisd69 You didnt pay attention in History class, didnt you? Germany couldnt pay the reparations because they had no money. The treaty of Versailles and the crippling debt was the hole reason hitler rose to power in the first place.

1. Germany (HRE) was the most populous nation in Europe. Even in 1700s its GDP was larger than that of France. Too bad HRE was disunited.
2. Germany (HRE) has excellent network of navigable rivers and also plenty of arable land.
3. Germany (HRE) has abundant natural resources, especially coal and iron, which France or Spain lack (France has its own, but not as abundant as Germany's).
Britain (England) actually had rather small population during medieval to early modern era. Its GDP was lower than Portugal and the Netherlands, not to mention continental heavyweight like HRE, France, or Spain. And 2. That Japan’s economy is way larger than I personally thought it was.

well the issue with this, is that the overseas colonies of britain or france weren't counted together with the mother country. the US western frontier was very similar to colonies in the sense that they were taken by military force and had lots of untapped natural resources to boost the economy, so the US has a bit of an unfair advantage in this measurement.

China got absolutely crushed in the Boxer Rebellion and Opium Wars.
The West reduced them from the most powerful, richest nation on Earth to an absolute hole. China had no chance of fighting the freshly industrialized Britain.
It took them a century to get back up, and they almost got the top spot back again.
@Oh FiddleSticks Not at the first spot yet. Their Purchasing Power Parity is higher but they still lag in quite a lot of areas. There's more to a world hegemony than raw GDP.
They'll snatch the top economy spot in a decade but a crisis is coming down the pipes. It's all about how they handle the aging population in about two to three decades. They have a huge bump coming due to the one child policy.
It might come in time for the second industrial revolution. Near complete replacement of basic workforce by robotics... if it won't, they are in trouble.

There's a big gap there you missed where China repeatedly shot itself in the feet with disastrous, ideologically driven policy.
