Lukas is a master in his own right. Yes it helps to come from Willies loins, but he had to put the work in. Nobody can do what he did in that video without the love and the work. Simply amazing... Great call on this one!!!
About 4 or 5yrs ago my gf had Austin City Limits on when I came home from work.. I immediately recognized his voice, but had no idea who this face was... I checked the info and even with the name Lukas Nelson it took me a holy sh!t moment to realize...
So good. I have been obsessed with this song and Lukas performance of his dad’s song for weeks, months after I watched Willie’s 90th birthday celebration. I listen to it almost every day because it’s always playing in my head. So pretty. ❤
Almost a perfect rendition of how Willie plays it, Lukas is probably the only person on earth that can pull this off. I remember my guitar teacher breaking this one down for me about 30 years ago. I had a bootleg recording of Willie playing "Angel" acoustic, I think Emmylou was in the room with him and they were trading songs. Willie had more embellishments with the triads. It blew my mind to hear that type of playing, especially on Trigger with its unique sound. Another great performance you can find is the live version of this song on the Honeysuckle Rose soundtrack. Thanks for choosing this performance Michael.
One of my favorite songs ever, and a song I play first when I pick up a guitar (along with Satisfied by Ian Moore). Willie is a WAY underappreciated player. Love this Michael. Well done. Would love to see you talk through Willie’s version. There are some differences. Lukas kills this.
I found Lukas through Spotify "Discover Weekly". I've been a big Country and Willie Nelson fan before, but when i heard "Just outside of Austin", i was totally flabbergasted at how amazing of a song it was. Quite literally picked up a guitar that very same evening once i got home and started learning it. Now i just have to add the lyrics to the playing and perhaps am able to even perform it.
Lukas is amazing. He's more of a rock and blues guy, but clearly he's comfortable in whatever genre. He and his band, The Promise of the Real, toured as Neil Young's touring band. It was an amazing show.
listen to his "Find Yourself " you will listen to it 500 times its that good love Lukas Nelson he has said he was a big SVR fan listen to him live at the opry its fantastic
My favorite Willie Nelson song and Lukas absolutely NAILS it! What a performance! I have watched that performance many times. One of the best live performances I have seen in years. Thanks for reacting to it.
No better time for a tribute....to the blood who got him there. I've followed Lucas for a while now , and I am not disappointed. Thank you good mr Palmesano......you have topped off my Fathers Day for sure. Stay well , ron
Michael you’ve got the coolest reactions man. It’s inspired me to geek out a bit on my listening and I believe has improved my playing. Thanks for the vids.
Thank you sir! Fantastic breakdown. Love the focus on favorite tricks. I struggle with finding tasteful placement of diminished chords/runs, this is a perfect tune to practice on. Cheers.
Hey Michael, You should really check out "Find Yourself by Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real". I went through a Willie Nelson discography listen through, and checked out his son's work. It is different but you still get some Willie--isms that, like you said, pay homage to his father but still retain his own originality. The track has this great groove, great melody, and showcases what Lukas Nelson is really about.
So pumped you are doing this video. Ive always liked the song, but as soon as I saw this sometime last year, I had to learn this version. Love Lucas and Willie"s playing styles. There are so many good elements in this that leveled up my playing. Thanks for this Michael!
I recommend you check out some of Lukas' guitar playing with his younger brother Micah, in a RUclips video titled "Lukas & Micah Nelson / Every thing is bullshit / Harrahs Resort - Funner, CA 1 1/5/18". His guitar playing in the middle of the song turns a "joke" song into something amazing.
I'm not a guitar player and nothing you said about the technique made any sense to me other than terms like major, minor, chromatic, and chord, but I enjoyed YOU enjoying the performance just about as much as I enjoyed the performance itself. I've been a fan of Willie over forty years and I'm happy that someone r
I'll probably catch flack for this, but there is a part of the brain that allows artists to do what they do. A gift. I'm NOT saying practice doesn't make you a better player, but artists, i.e., painters, sculptures, musicians, have a gift. If not... everyone would be able to do it at the level which makes them special. A specific part of the brain (I don't know which part. And some may say I don't have a brain after this post lol) that allows them (with practice)to comprehend, emulate, or create what they are trying to accomplish at a speed relevant to the task. Will I be able to play like this? Maybe. After years and years and years of practice. While others (artists) pick it up relatively quickly. I would give anything to play at the level and accuracy in which some people display. I've seen growth in my playing, but do I think I will ever play as good as you (Michael) or Lucas? Probably not. But it won't stop me from trying. I might be 100 yo before I can play like this, but at least I'll die a happy man. Love your page, and how you break things down.
I'd love to see you do a breakdown to a song with some of Willie's guitar playing... he always plays Ou Es-Tu Mon Amour live, which I think is a phenomenal acoustic instrumental.
This was one Great video, you nailed it. Can you do the same thing you just did with "Angel" with either "Funny how time slips away" or "Always on my Mind"
Definitely agree with the don't sleep on Willie Nelson's guitar playing sentiment. I'm on a mission to get everyone turned on to the Teatro album. One of my favorite Willie videos is the official version of I Never Cared for You. ruclips.net/video/kmdwsLtNx2E/видео.html Lukas is fantastic as well. Of course he shines when he sings with his dad and brother or does his dad's songs but his own stuff is great as well. You should check out a few of his live performances of his song Forget About Georgia. If I remember correctly there is also e version on the first album with a rather lengthy guitar solo that is not to be missed.
Jesse Wells “War Isn’t Murder”. Jesse has so many instant hits, and his clever lyrics are real AF. He can really play that beat up acoustic too. ruclips.net/video/8E9l_i6HPYM/видео.htmlsi=ZTsV3E_rMkgGvMnb
Thank you for this revue…you’re inching upwards in your journey being like Willie…a National Treasure ! I’m so glad you not only like Willie, but you revere him! 100% spot on, just as Lucas is more, much more than a sound-alike, there’s only one ☝️ of you Michael P., and folks learning the guitar will attest to my thoughts. You’re the students Angel, flying too close to the ground! Thank you, and may God continue to bless you and your family! Pea sout!
Hey Michael! Not sure how this works- long time lurker, first time troll... Love your channel and your musical analysis. Have you done a deep dive into Brian Setzer yet? Sleepwalk has been a centerpiece of his set for years- he's certainly one of the most underappreciated musicians of his generation. He could make so much more money just touring as a trio (Stray Cats), but he spends a hearty chunk on bringing a 15pc show band on the road. Pure musician. Tell us about what he's doing here, please! ruclips.net/video/Eosj3MUD2WE/видео.html
I post on here every so often with a link to one of my songs. Hoping one day someone records one! ruclips.net/video/fnqve6iNa9U/видео.htmlsi=rZf1AwZuLD0il4Oe And still waiting on my first comment! Maybe someone here can be the first. 😄
Hey Michael- Luka is doing an almost note for note transcription of Willie's original from "Honeysuckle Rose" back from 1980. Credit where credit's due- do an analysis on Willie's playing. Here's the original. ruclips.net/video/7DKKh5icgI8/видео.html
Lukas is a master in his own right. Yes it helps to come from Willies loins, but he had to put the work in. Nobody can do what he did in that video without the love and the work. Simply amazing... Great call on this one!!!
It’s crazy how much he sounds like Willie…
Yep if you just hear the audio you probably couldn't tell the difference.
All I've heard is the first line and he sounds JUST like his dad
I would say his brother Micah (Partical Kid) sounds even more like Willie
Merle Haggard has a few sons that sound like Merle, so old country is not dead..
About 4 or 5yrs ago my gf had Austin City Limits on when I came home from work.. I immediately recognized his voice, but had no idea who this face was... I checked the info and even with the name Lukas Nelson it took me a holy sh!t moment to realize...
Lukas is very much his father's son. He's terrific in his own right.
So good. I have been obsessed with this song and Lukas performance of his dad’s song for weeks, months after I watched Willie’s 90th birthday celebration. I listen to it almost every day because it’s always playing in my head. So pretty. ❤

I play this video at least once a week. It’s a perfect cover.

Lucas's arrangement of his Dads song is nothing short of genius I think.
Lucas is definitely Forging his own path and I believe is making some really good music
Just Outside of Austin is a great one of Lukas’ to check out. Lots more of that great chord work
My second favorite song from Willie! Blue Eyes is undeniable. Great reaction and share, sir!!🤓🤠
listen to his "Find Yourself " you will listen to it 500 times its that good love Lukas Nelson he has said he was a big SVR fan listen to him live at the opry its fantastic
I saw this show at the Hollywood bowl and the shrooms had just kicked in when Lukas went up I cant even describe the feeling
Lukas Nelson is a Fantastic Singer, Song Writer, Musician and Performer!🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
You’re absolutely correct Mike, genius arrangement!!
Thanks for all you do brother!
I love it when you geek out on these, Michael! Happy Father's Day, my friend. Keep it in your hands.
My favorite Willie Nelson song and Lukas absolutely NAILS it! What a performance!
I have watched that performance many times. One of the best live performances I have seen in years. Thanks for reacting to it.
I was at this show, both nights and it was so good! I had tears streaming out of my eyes as Lukas played!
Lukas is awesome. His country stuff. His rock stuff. All of it.
That was magic!!! Looks like I need to go down the Lucas rabbit hole 🐰
Beautiful song ❤
I just found this and was utterly gobsmacked at just how good it was! Thanks for this, it's worthy!
Happy Father’s Day and thanks for all you do to teach us non-musicians!
I’ve been waiting for this video by someone for sooooo long. Thank you so much
Beautiful, lukas amazing 👏
Willie Nelson is one of only two musicians Miles Davis speaks highly of in his autobiography. The other is T. Monk.
No better time for a tribute....to the blood who got him there. I've followed Lucas for a while now , and I am not disappointed. Thank you good mr Palmesano......you have topped off my Fathers Day for sure. Stay well , ron
Lukas is 🔥.
No doubt will be a star for many years with stuff like that. 😎
Sooo smooth and tasteful!! Great tune.
Lukas is so cool!!!
Thanks Michael. Excellent breakdown of a great song. Another great musician you've introduced me to.
Michael you’ve got the coolest reactions man. It’s inspired me to geek out a bit on my listening and I believe has improved my playing. Thanks for the vids.
Great teaching moment…..thanx Mike ….for breaking it all the way down…..
Lukas is one of my favorites.
THIS was Amazing !!~ I LOVE this song ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! thank you.
Awesome job bringing all the scuttles to light.

One of my favorite movies ever! And yes, the similarities are incredible!
This is pure genius 👏 Bravo! 😊
I’m in, I’m hooked.
Thank you sir! Fantastic breakdown. Love the focus on favorite tricks. I struggle with finding tasteful placement of diminished chords/runs, this is a perfect tune to practice on. Cheers.

Find yourself is a great song!
Do not have a clue what you are talking about with guitar info but Absolutely love your analyses
We’re all thinking it, you said it!! “This is flat out bitchin’”
GREAT SONG AND GREAT JOB MP !!!
Very cool

Lukas Nelson is a phenomenal artist in his own right being Willies son has probably been a blessing and a curse
Listen to the song again as a new father of a daughter and after raising his daughter is faced with releasing her to the world
I’ve seen many guitar heroes live (holdsworth, evh, Derek trucks, etc) and Willie holds his own with any of them
@2:54 isn’t that Bb diminished just a Vi chord ? going to the ii ? Like “ I got rhythm” and countless othe jazz standards . Just curious .
Willie said Lukas is a far better player than him. Of course he’s a proud Father but Lukas is incredible. Can’t wait to see you react to his music.
NICE! Is that the new Space Blue finish?

Lucas Nelson before Martin Sexton? There oughta be a law.

He taught Bradley Cooper to play guitar so he would be credible while guitar in "A Star is Born".
did someone clone Willie?
He's like Willie, but better and hot! 😄

You really like to make it about yourself....
Another riding the tailcoats with serious Nasal congestion. Blow your nose Lucass
another boring song that is far from guitar centric
I’m not sure we watched the same video…
When Willie is gone, hIS Magic won't be lost. Lukas is INCREDIBLE!
