- Welcome to the first in an ongoing series we're calling "Reference Points". In this series, we will be working backwards in a way, to tell all of you newer lovers of horology about some important watches that we feel make up the foundation of modern wristwatches. We've tried to give you tidbits of historical knowledge in several of our articles over the years - in particular those from the "Historical Perspectives" category - but now we're going even further. Today, in our first "Reference Points" feature, we're starting at the top and explaining to you the entire line of arguably the most important line of a single complication there is - perpetual calendar chronographs by Patek Philippe, from the very beginning. Read the whole story here: www.hodinkee.com/features/refe...

To this day, this episode remains one of my all time favourites from Hodinkee. Such quality
Agree. The best of the best
As far as I have seen these are some of the best watches that exist.
Yep and AaS
One of the greatest, most consequential, and beautiful watches ever made.
Thank you so much for this! For someone who is just getting the hang of the watch-world this is pure gold. Might I ask how often you plan on releasing these? Amazing work.
It's not about telling time you wanna tell time use you Cellphone. its heck of a lot cheaper then your 8K rolex. its about workmanship, Art, Complications.
nim nim parvin
Besides no quadruple Gyroscoptic Tourbillon can be as precise as an Atomic Clock, which satellite time and mobile phone time are based on.
You want phone calls, emails, texts and notifications to follow you around everywhere you go, get a cell phone or a smart watch. You wanna know the time and nothing else, get a mechanical watch.
I'd rather get a 10 dollar Casio to tell the time instead of a phone. A phone you have to take out of a pocket and press a button. I watch I can just move my eyes and *look* at.
you can take a plane ride from anywhere on earth and fly to italy and France and see and appreciate workmanship and art for heck of a lot cheaper than these Pateks
Reference points has to be the most important and fun videos to watch about some of my favorite watches! Bravo!
To have a 5970 with the pushers of a 2499 would be a dream come true
Another great video series, keep up the good work. I learn something new with every video.
Best watch videos on RUclips. Love those Patek's.
It's about time you all posted another vid...nice video!

Casio F91W for the win.
Fabulous work👍👍
Stunning
This is just awesomeness
great video ,
Beautiful
What happened at 2:07? The seconds hand stopped at 59?
Wtf... I just noticed... That's weirddd
: ) That means Matthew Mcconaughey is sending out SOS. He's in trouble in deep space. LOL
COLLABERATORZ Ouija Able He is a ghost.
They probably only wound the watch a tiny bit to get the video, it simply ran out of wind, these watches all require winding by hand
Yep, that's the best watches allright. I will collect them once I hit 50s
Grande !!👍👍
Could we have Omega, Longines, Vacheron, JLC, Oris
Perpetual Calendar Day!
how many people are subscribed to Hodinkee?
The key issue here, is that Patek Philippe .. unlike Omega, Rolex, Zenith, JLC ... and many others .... are not vertically integrated outfit. They buy parts and sometimes ebauches from the likes of ETA, modify them and only assemble them in-house. They might be great at hand polishing the parts to a very high degree, but that is "not a watch making". In past, Patek had entire movements made for them by the likes of Jaeger le Coultre and by Girard Perregaux, hence why not buy Jaeger le Coultre in the first place.
Everything is about the design. What makes Patek "the best" is that they have the most beautiful watches. You know that the colours Picasso used were not made by him? Also the canvas was not made by him? Also the brushes where not "in-house" he outsourced everything, but what he put together is what counts. It's very similar with watches, Patek Philippe is art. Look, I agree with you, if you really care about the mechanics of the watch, yes, buy a perpetual calendar JLC in stainless steel at unbelievable price. That's a great watch, but, it's not beautiful, like most of the JLCs. Iconic yes, but not beautiful (I have many JLCs) and I have many Pateks, when I put a Patek like 5970 on my wrist I feel like a God, when I put JLC on my hand I feel smart, because few people understand how good those watches really are, but when I look at it, I don't feel the love I get from the Pateks. Same as with ALS and even FP Journe (the closest rival to Patek). Also, to buy all of these watches, it costs money, a lot of money, so you want to make sure that your money is safe. For that reason I buy Patek. Also, I started to buy FP Journe because it's inevitable their prices will go up, probably faster than most of the Pateks today. It's the beauty of the product that counts.
If it is true that Patek doesn't manufacture their own parts, that's a pretty big stink on their name. Doesn't matter if their watches are among the most beautiful in the business. I'm really disappointed if RickJ are right about this.
@49fiori You are a snob. But basically right when saying that Patek make nicely finished watches. Coming back to snobism. It was a while back, when I used to put bi-metal Rolex Daytona on my wrist every time I wanted to test drive the new Ferrari. Purely, because salesman at Maranello asked me silly questions about what I do and what I am driving ... if I wore Omega.
@49fiori I have some 35 watches ... and had couple of manual wind blue dial Patek Elipsis a long, long time ago ... since then, I have progressed a bit, although not in the same direction as you obviously. FP Journe makes beautiful and unique watches, but I am more Breguet, Ulysse Nardin and JLC, or IWC sports watches guy. Although that I do have bit of everything.
@Faustian Funk Look at Lemania movements in last year's manual Omega Speedmaster 1863 (Moonwatch) and compare them to some of Patek Philippe movements. The fabulous Patek CH 2770 movement is Lemania 2310 ... in everything but name. Even their $100,000+ watches use Swatch parts, or entire Swatch movements. Whilst I am not saying that other watchmakers like Breitling, or IWC don't do the same? They don't usually hide it. Half of Swiss watch industry use ETA-Valjoux, or Lemania movements, with add on modules by the likes of Dubois-Depraz. It is only in last few years, that major brands started to produce in-house movements (one type only, in most cases), whilst they still use ETA for majority of their watch models.
i would luv to buy every day one of it ...
isn't the 1518 case 35mm in diameter not 36mm?
Yes 35mm
Can it wear with nato strap?
best comment
These are some of my daily beaters, no big deal really they look nice enough
This guy's voice is soo deeeeep.. He should be into podcasts.
*That’s like 15 million worth of watches*
Nope. More like 3 million
Wow!
What happened to the chrono second at 2:02 it just slows and stops?
If you watch the seconds hand at 9 o'clock, it appears to strike the hour hand and jam the train. This forces the watch to stop the transfer of energy.
GRAFHC
Not something you would want to see in a watch of this magnitude.
Patek Phillipe. No es un reloj Cronografo. Es una obra de Arte. El puzon de Ginebra
How much price in $
2499 is the best watch ever made :D
1:54
Why does the 5970P not have a deployment?
To keep the price down? JK!
Can someone explain to me why the 5970 is so iconic? I understand that its gorgeous but whats more to it? Im very curious!!!
PandaPower3195 I prefer the 5070, which lacks the day and date but looks more elegant.
+PandaPower3195
It's sort of a tribute to the 1518, the first perpetual calendar chronograph patek ever made, so i guess it's sort of special in the lineage that way. My fav is the 5204 though, which is not in this video.
Oh thats actually pretty cool, thank you for explaining that. I'm particularly in love with the 1463!
I have a casio XD
Is no one going to mention how the watch malfunctions @2:07
It ran out of juice
I bet the typical owner of one of these Patek perp calendar chronographs brings the watch back to the store whenever he needs to set it. Unless he has a 13-year-old nephew whom he trusts to set it for him.
Why do I need the month on my watch?
Why would you beed the Moon Phase on the watch? Right? Its just to show the craftsmanship and complication.
+Spuds7er Why are you watching this video?
+Spuds7er Why?
Because you can.
Will be really handy when I get abducted by aliens I guess.
Big tie.
One day, I promise!
the shpitz indeed!
How much
if only ....but ya never know !
I have a Patek phillipe and I got it for $10 at the garage sale.
If you want the best, you buy Jaeger le Coultre, or IWC perpetual 100 year calendar watches ... and not Patek with 1 year perpetual (?) calendar ...
after all it was Patek, who used to use Jaeger (as well as Lemania, Girard Perregaux and others) movements ... and not vice versa.
200 bucks each!? I take them all!
Dear Gentlemen the closest I can get to anything like these are my collection of 4 mint Omega Cosmic moon phase triple dates in various sizes and metals however they feel shpitsy to me - I have promised myself to start with Patek next year, still got a few more Rolie to get
The end of the road!!!
one day
5270 is the best IMO (not in this video)
l have a Rolex submarine gilt dial 5513
Noreciau pirkti. kiek kainuoja
An apartment produces at least 5%/year in rent and another 5% (min) in value. I have 5 replicas - 2 Pateks (1 a complication), Rolex, Breitling and a Cartier. About US1K each. Everyone says -"Great watch you have there, expensive eh?". Yes I say. "This one (the complicated Patek) I bought when I made the 1st million". Been making anywhere from 500k to 1M every year for the last 5 years trading sovereign bond futures. 😅🤣😂
there very nice watches, but not many people can afford this:/
SAINT MICHAEL TIME WACH
Arabic numerals are actually Hindu-Arabic numerals. It urks me every time someone calls them arabic numerals.
The ones on the watch are Arabic numerals not Hindu-Arabic numerals
***** They're actually the same thing, except one name fails to credit Hindus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_numerals
Peep peep little bird.
Arabic numerals
What a stupid thing to be upset about

All I heard was "Well yes Ben they do all look the same and are incredibly overpriced"
Good one Toby! Very funny! Hahaha! That was me laughing! I wanted to indicate that I was laughing in real life! Hahaha! I did it again! Hahaha! I don't know what's come over me! Hahaha! Hahaha! Hahaha!

theRealAV8r What about Invicta?
This is a shitter free zone! Shoo shoo!
Cheating
They look like some crap you'd by at flee market. Never use gator or alligator strap. Trust me they skin things then throw body's to their buddy's.
For slave owners, not slaves. Beautiful
Is the guy on the right a Jew ?
Yes
Sure 🤣🤣
Jews not allowed to wear gold! not good.
Just Muslims I thought
You’re mistaken. Some Muslim sects don’t wear gold, jews and cristians can wear gold if they want.
i'll stick with my ROLEX! if you can tell time on a watch that 200 grand? you can tell time on a watch that is 8 grand!!
Well, good for you that you have one and spent 8 grand in it, Rolexes are fantastic watches. But the point of this video is not just "telling time", it's about one of the the best complications ever made.
Jude Francis Ballares : ... Your point being? Your comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Unless its sole purpose was that of telling the world that you own a Rolex? By your own logic, we could also argue that other people might stick to their timex and Invicta watches, because if you can tell time on one of those, then you don't need the 8,000.00 Rolex. Someone saying something like that here, would be every bit as unnecessary and nonsensical as your remark is. All this being said, did you not watch the video and noticed that these are perpetual calendars, and as such, they give more information than what you could gather from a regular three hand watch as most Rolex are? Do you understand what a perpetual calendar is? A mechanical watch that will give you the correct time, day, date, and year (some of which, as presented here, also have a chronograph function) without having to adjust them until around the year 2100? All this from a mechanical instrument? What comparison is it you are even trying to make here?
*That's what a seiko owner once said about my Rolex. To each his own! Cheers from Bangor, Maine where recreational marijuana is absolutely legal and home prices are some of the lowest in the entire nation.*
Of course its a Jew owning a store like this lol
Jews ✡ ?
Sure 🤣🤣🤣🤣
