    The other day I hooked up to a massive tire. After an hour of a drag pulling, rod bending battle I finally got it to shore, and right as I reached for the net it broke my rod, reel, and popped my line. Then I slipped and fell in the river. A cop came and gave me a $100 ticket for swimming in front of a NO SWIMMING sign.

      we have speckled trout and redfish in the states. I personally use way less drag for top water so the fish can run with the lure vs the excitement of trying to set the hook. Its increased hook up 10 fold. Allows for the nerves to be delayed as the fish takes the lure 😅😊

    Reminds me a lot of fishing in South Florida where I live. Canals and creeks with multiple species of fish including some non-native tropical species, stopping by the side of road, tossing top water lures then quickly changing to soft plastics, walking through the bushes and a bunch of crocodilians. But, our crocodilians are American Alligators who don't, as a rule attack humans, not like salties at all that seem to like Australian human flesh! Great video mate!

    Hey cavy just a few tips for hook sets for barra, you don't need a big gt hook set just 1 goodstrik if you do to much strikes it will rip there lips like it happened previously, I catch many barra on top water and I just do a good hard strike then your on, also should loosen your drag a little bit more cause they like to hit and run so if it's to tight then it'll come strait out of there mouth,but don't do it to loose

  • @mswen1983
    @mswen1983 6 месяцев назад

    Something that's worked for me in the US for largemouth is casting a noisy topwater near a spot like a stump, weed edge, or overhanging tree, then _immediately_ twitch it 4-5 times as fast as possible (think trying to make as much noise as possible while letting the lure move as little as possible, and pause. Often fish will swipe at certain lures, like topwater baits, to try and injure the fish before grabbing it. Making a lot of noise noise imitates either a terrestrial creature that fell in or small fish feeding. Either way, fish come charging in for the easy meal, and tend to inhale the lure on the first pause (when I think they first get a bead on it). I get very few misses, especially with fish sitting in shallow water.

  • @jx10r13
    @jx10r13 9 месяцев назад +1

    Don't know if you'll see this, but try upping the size of your hooks a tad can help with hookups, but it will change the action of the lure some. Or use a slightly smaller top water lure, consider the size and buoyancy of a large top water it makes it a bit harder for the barramundi to eat it. They are a very similar fish to large snook here in florida in the states where i live and they use suction to inhale their food then snap shut. id love to go over there and fish for barra!!! I love catching monster snook here, not sure how big barra get, but the largest snook I've caught was 51", that's a very large snook and aren't caught that size often at all. Did get a nice pic with it.

    Cavy, I'd say luckiest fisherman alive! for surviving that first croc infested river.
    Just before you caught the tarpon and were walking along the bank I thought you'd relaxed way too much!! then you did the water release !!! I fully expected to see a croc looking back at the gopro during that!
    Top vid. Sharks , snakes, biting ants isn't Oz grouse!

    I really like how you switched it up here to fresh/ brackish waters. You should take a trip to south Florida here and hit the Everglades for a wide variety of monster fish. Of course gotta watch every step for the crocks and gators here as well.

      Also I have question I wanna ask. So does the water you fish in this video is it effected by the tides like rise with the in coming out going tides or do you fellas have just straight freshwater water sharks lol

    How far upriver from the salt were you? I suppose that during heavy rains, bulls sharks can go up shallow stretches that you would think they couldn't. In bigger rivers, they've been recorded hundreds of miles inland.

    for shallow water with lots of obstacles its tough going. In normal conditions, your drag might be set a bit too high, the hooks might be getting in but they're ripping out. In that situation id use conventional extra heavy setup, then switch out the hooks to a slightly larger size and extra sharp needle point hooks. the "Triple Grip" style with canted in points tend to stay in better from my experience. Use straight 80lb braid, no leader.

      @@CavyFishing yea that's wild we have them all the way from 2lb to 200lbs the big ones seem to like the rivermouths and channels oceanside where the juvenile ones stick to the mangroves inshore. Thats really strange you guys have juvenile but no adults

    i don't fish saltwater often but I've heard when the fish goes under the rock stop pulling but keep tension wait a little bit and flick the line like a guitar string the fish eventually gets irritated and will relocate. not sure how effective this method is but thought id share

    Love the videos. But I have a question. I see you use a spinning rod when chasing Barra on topwater. Is there any particular reason why you don’t use a baitcaster setup? Is it because of the size of the fish or personal preference?

    Nice vid mate! seems like your over anticipating the strike. Always go, fish strike's, breath then ease the pressure. only pull back hard when the fish is running the line away from you. Otherwise you pull it out of there mouth. But really cool action and lovely location bro nice enjoyed!

    get some of those weedless frog lures, they skim right through (and over) the paddies without getting caught and they are soft plastic so when the fish crushes it the hooks are exposed. Get a few because the fish will destroy them. First thing in morning and late afternoon. Count to two, then set hook. Takes time to not instinctively yank when they explode on it. Sometimes fish hit and try to stun the bait, then come back to eat. Just go slack, then start again in a few seconds

    In the US I fish topwater weedless frogs often. If I'm missing strikes I will smear scent on the frog and hook more fish. Also if I hesitate just a heartbeat I hook more fish.

    Love your videos I must get up to the top end
    Two things to contribute
    1/ FG works fine as long as the diameters are different so if you’ve only got 20 pounds then the braid wants to be a bit thinner
    I probably wouldn’t tie FG if I was using a 20 pound lead unless I could maybe go for a 15 pound super thin braid probably premium braid
    2/
    When line diameters are very similar, please try the carrot knot I use that for tying 4 lb. Braid onto a 4 pound lead.

    Man! Use a casting rod reel for top water lures like the first you were fishing with,combinig with compassed pulls you'll get a zig zag topwater swimming that drive them crazy! And double up you're line power and upgrad to a heavy action rod to pull them out of those covers! if you did this all those firs "baramandi??" would never get away ;)

    New sub here , FUN FACT ... When top fishing for Barra , which is just an Asian sea bass , you need patience. The first hit it is just stunning it's prey , don't be tempted to strike, wait for the second hit and you will hook many , many more.
