I’ve seen Steven Wilson 4 times and he once introduced this song by first explaining that he writes songs with depressing subjects because the thinks they’re beautiful (that it’s a common human struggle). When he submitted the demo of this song, his manager or producer (can’t remember who exactly) said this the most depressing song he’s written. Steven concluded that by his logic, this song is the most beautiful song he’s ever written. 😂

The female singer is an Israeli singer-songwriter named Ninet Tayeb. She also sings on another SW solo song called Pariah. Check it out if you haven’t yet. Stay well and keep the reactions coming👍

On the Hand.Cannot.Erase tour, at least when they came over here, Steven said before playing the song: "You know me for writing dark, melancholic and depressive songs, well the next song is the most, for me, is the most depressing song Ive written. Its dark even for my standards....this is Routine." And they started....

Did you see the newspaper? It explains the entire song as to what happened.
And while this is a very sad song, there is also hope at the end. You have to look at it that way where she finally breaks at the end and it’s not about mourning or forgetting but coming to terms with a tragedy and being able to move forward while keeping people in your memories. It’s actually quite beautiful if you’ve ever been through significant loss and have to learn to live again.

Absolutely true. She's been in denial for some time but finally accepts the situation. I love how her dark, swollen eyes become more natural at the end, like she's getting some sleep at last. Almost seems to grin a bit. What a genius Steven is.

There is a great ‘live rehearsal’ version of this song on YT from the Royal Albert hall in London. Worth a watch on screen or off. There is a mood uptick after the scream that ends on hope. The Album from which this comes is one of the best progressive albums that I have heard in 50 years and well worth a listen and some more reacts ‘Hand Cannot Erase’…….try any track they are all good but maybe the live version of ‘Ancestral’ also from the Royal Albert Hall would be up your street.

Yes, this song is included in the vinyl version of this concert and this 5th disc is the most played of the set... It's even better than the "original", because Ninet sings a lot more, taking the lines that usually SW does. This guy is a genius, truly an amazing musician.

It is a dark song but there is a lot of hope at the end. Notice that in the early part of the video she is putting all incoming mail (presumably cards / letters of condolence for her loss) immediately in a box in a cabinet in the hallway. At the end of the video, after her personal crisis, she is going through them all. Like Wilson sings “Don’t ever let go … try to let go”. She can let go of her husband and boys but at the same time she has to let go of her denial of the tragedy, or her daily routine she kept up even after they were gone. That is the hope at the end, that no matter how dark a place you are there is always light at the end of the tunnel, always.

I saw Steven Wilson in concert a few years back, and he basically started by saying "I hate f'ing hate happy songs. I like melancholy songs." Being a "happy music guy" I thought to myself, what am I doing? Damn did I get a lesson from a musical genius. This video and song should be played to every single Congressman and Senator who has voted against gun legislation. Perhaps with their eyes forced open like in "A Clockwork Orange." The effect that the events portrayed in this video have upon the lives of every single person left behind is in many ways unrecoverable, but like in the end ... there's hope and a pathway back. But we never leave it completely behind.

Hi guys - love your open and honest reaction again as always - but you must promise us faithful listeners that you will in fact listen to this song at least once more - the LIVE version sung by Ninet Tayeb from the Home Invasion DVD recorded at The Royal Albert Hall in London in 2018.
Even more impactful is that they include on the DVD the rehearsal of this song which is of course played to a completely hauntingly beautiful but totally empty theatre - only adds to the impact of the loneliness of the song.
I assume you noted that newspaper clipping on the floor toward the end of the clip that explains what the song was about - a mother who lost her husband and 2 children to a school shooting in the USA.
Also notice at the beginning she sings of washing their dirty shoes and clothes in the sink - she was likely washing the blood out of them - and this is why when she cuts her hand washing the dishes and her own blood flows into the sink she finally loses it.
Incredibly powerful song, written, recorded and yes produced by Sir Steven Wilson.
Please do yourself the.... experience... of watching the LIVE version. You will be brought to tears - but it will be worth it.

And he does all his own production along with many others; look them up, the man is a genius.
And Ninet did the the other vocal work on this and her voice is just perfect for the part, and the boys choir parts are spectacular.

**Spoilers** - The main character has lost both her husband and 2 children to a horrific school shooting (a la America). She continues her everyday life as if it didn't happen, hence "Routine". The song ends with her angrily discussing her demise and recovery. It's a very positive song about true death.
