Since the embassy is DeFacto Iranian territory, then Israel has directly attacked the nation of Iran. It would be a grievous mistake for Iran to use proxies to retaliate. One would find it most difficult to argue that Iran was not fully justified in a DIRECT response, nation to nation.

Using proxies to retaliate would show exactly how weak Iran is right now. A larger, albeit regional war in the middle east would absolutely see a restructuring of borders in that region with consequences the world over. Iran is walking a very thin line. I feel like they're in a similar position to Russia, damned if they do and damned if they don't. Which is not necessarily strategically advantageous for us either - considering Occidental goals.

Iran has the advantage in a tit-for-tat engagement. They are not politically vulnerable in this arena. However they cannot afford a war. If Iran attacks Israel, then it is an Israeli problem. If Iran attacks the US, the US needs to escalate to de-escalate because Iran cannot afford to escalate.

It was very unwise to target a diplomatic building, even with good intelligence you will lose the optics fight, best to try and convince the UN to sanction Iran for illegal use of a diplomatic mission (maybe the IJC has some sway there), ntm that conducting assassinations in foreign countries never goes well.
Israel can do whatever it wants and get away with it scot-free. The US will simply veto anyone who tries to condemn or sanction Israel in the UN.
