I've pulled 1200, 1500 plus pounds with a Wheelhorse C160 quite a few times in mountain country. Works excellent. The real question isn't necessarily about pulling. It's about STOPPING. Use good strong common sense when using older machinery.
I use my 1984 Ariens gt17 for hauling wood. That's what it's done every year practically since new, in addition to snowblowing a long driveway in WI winters, and mowing about 4 acres of grass for the first 30 or so years of its existence. I inherited it from my Dad, and I use it to mow my acre of lawn and haul firewood. I just used it to haul 4500+ lbs of honey locust in one load the other week. Growing up, we'd use it to haul fresh cut sugar maple and shagbark hickory, a cord at a time through the woods and up hills. According to charts I see, wet green shagbark is 5100 lbs a cord, and the old pickup chassis 4x8 trailer was at least the 850 lbs of your trailer. All in all, it was guaranteed that the full load was 6000 lbs. Impressive to say the least. Chains are a must, unless you have ag tires like yours does. Traction with turf tires and a little snow is bad. Almost non existent without chains. One of these days I'll build my detached garage so I can use the 48" snowblower attachment on the gt17.
Sounds like an awesome setup Tom. Those Ariens GT series were built tough. 6000 lbs on muddy trails is incredible. I know how heavy Hickory, Sugar Maple and Locust are. Very cool 👍
It’s not a garden tractor, but I’ve got a Ford jubilee tractor, I pulled a 2600 lb oak log with it the other day. My ole tractor is ugly, doesn’t always run right, but she’s a worker
Yes sir. I still see tractors like the Jubilee, the 8n, and the 9n working hard. Pretty impressive considering they are around 70 years old at this point.
I love that super tilt cart! Must be some what hard to find I did a quick Google search nothing came up. That’s how I haul wood with my couple JDs. But I could use a bigger well made cart like that what do you know about them. Looks pretty well built and vintage itself. I spend last weekend welding some metal on my JD 15 cart to stiffen things up a bit, it’s pretty light for the amount of wood I’m hauling and something bigger would be quicker too. Great video and sense of humor!
Good Evening Sir, THAT WAS SUCH A FUN VIDEO INTRODUCTION 🤣👌👍 The Tractor Is Driving By Itself ( THAT WAS SOOOO FUN TO SEE !!! ) 🤣👌👍 Yes Very Impressive In Deed 👍👌😇 OUTSTANDING Video Sir Cheers 😇👌👍🍻
I have four "Burbs" and each one performs a specific task on the homestead. The 71 does all the plow and disc work in the garden. The 74 SS16 does all the dozer and scrape work. The 74 ST12 That I restored 11 years ago does the mowing, and the 68 Suburban 12 pulls a 1 ton wagon. 2 newer Craftsman LT1000's complete the fleet of mowers. Great tractors and a great video.
Thank you sir. Sounds like a great fleet you have there. My very first GT at around 12 years old was an ST12 we got from a friend. They traded it in for a newer mower. I loved that mustard yellow and white color scheme. Wish I still had the tractor. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Dude awesome video!! I'm definitely going to see if I can find one of those trailers. I've got a few garden tractors. I've got a mahindra sub compact that I love. I've got a john deere 318 that I really like. But I've got a lot of cub cadet narrow frames I use for different projects. My favorite is this little beat up 125 that no joke I pull a 2500 pound trailer from the back of my property to the front on a regular basis in alot of mud to. I wish I could post the pictures on here of it. I posted some pictures on a cub cadet page one day and I got alot of hate over it. Lol I didn't buy that thing not to use !! It's amazing that's its only 10 horse power and one little piston.
Doesn’t surprise me at all Case. It’ll pull more than that. I have a 1970 John Deere 140 H3. 53 years old. That will out pull that old Sears. Hehe 😂😂 But really they are work horses. I once pulled a LGT 100 Ford garden tractor. It quit. Hooked the John Deere to it. I was on the Deere, son was on the Ford. I went toward the garden, son locked the brakes on. Bugger. I didn’t know this. I kept going. I drove through the garden pulling the ford. Didn’t stop. Was a one sod 10” plow on the Ford. Son being bad, dropped the plow down into the garden. I didn’t know this and kept going. Only turf tires on the John Deere while doing all this. Ya they can pull. Great video Case. Yesterday, snow 8”. Then rain 8 hours, back to snow over nite. You can image what that was like to move. Use the Case 224 with 48” snowcaster. Doesn’t throw that far, so had to throw it 4 times in some places, you know what that’s like. Any way, got it done. Long day. Worked great. But had some belt squealing at times. Have a good day.
Great comment and cool story Noel. I love using these old workhorses. They always deliver and always impress. We got 5” or so of snow yesterday, so I tested the 54” plow on Brett’s Case 220. It did well even with the wet heavy snow. Video was taken 😉 Take care my friend!
My impressive tractor story would have to be the day of the tractor pull at senior Buildalot’s house. My tractor, despite being underpowered, too light, and even having the wrong type of tires on, still outperformed Senior’s Simplicity 7117, the Ss-14, and even brother Buildalot’s Montgomery Ward
Gear reduction = mechanical advantage. My grandfather had late 70’s early 80’s Sears garden tractor. He did the same kinda of work with it. It was nimble and pulled pretty much everything his truck would pull just really slowly
We are always impressed by what our old garden tractors can pull and it is great to use them to tow trailers as it is so much easier to get the trailer into a tight spot than using a truck. We pull our 14 foot three axle road trailer all the time with our Bolens HT23 and it handles it really well. That trailer weighs 850kg empty and we have pulled it loaded at about 3,500kg. We did hook it up to a Bolens G10 once and it pulled it well but when we were on uneven ground it started to lift the back of the G10. The G10 is a very light tube frame and with three axles on the trailer is likes to stay level. We would not even try pulling any trailer with a modern GT
Wow! 3,500 kg/7700 lbs is some serious weight. I’m not surprised though. The old Bolens are built like tanks, and the HT23 is a monster amongst those tanks. Very cool 😎
I tell you what, it may be down on HP compared to the modern garden tractors that all seem to be just under 25HP (EPA thing?), but I bet it doesn't have a brittle plastic gearbox.
Yes sir. No plastic parts or wimpiness on these old machines. Built to be passed down generation to generation. I actually knew the original owner. My father was good friends with his family, growing up down the road. We did work on his home several times going back 25-30 years or so. He passed away 6 years ago at the age of 96.
Fun video! I was not prepared for that! Lol! That tractor is going to outlast us all! I have a 45 years old Bolens HT-23 and it's in great shape! Doing burnouts... (kinda!). Got that on a video you've seen before! Thanks! ruclips.net/video/EYhtRzM4uOc/видео.html

These machines are true workhorses! You even gave us a glimpse in the opener.
Take care Case and BuildALot family!

Thanks Gan. I agree, they can do a real lot of work. Good eye on the intro. I think it was my first time using it. I hope folks like it 🙏👍

All about gear ratio. Them old garden tractors are hard to beat, back when they had real rear ends and grandma gear.
Yes sir. Bulletproof and beefy rear ends.

I have had newer "lawn tractors" that barely pulled me around, let alone a few thousand pounds of wood in the snow. Great video!
Thank you sir. The old workhorses really are impressive 👍
That’s awesome! Those old lawn tractors are phenomenal.
Thank you sir 🙏
I’ve pulled my homemade log arch, with a 3000 lb log, with my John Deere 316k garden tractor.
Great series there 👍

Is that the original prototype for self driving cars 😂, that was too funny Case ya ya ya ya…, pretty impressive 👍🏻. Have a great week 🙋🏼♂️🙂👍🏻

I had the same style tractor it was an SS 12. It pulled my brothers car which broke down about 2 miles from the house back home.
