    To add a little bit of context, the musical is a lot different from the original epic but i did try to include some references haha. Specifically the cow frame. So I don't think this is in the musical haha, but in the poem they come across an island populated by the cattle of Helios. Tiresias instructs them that as long as they don't harm the cattle, they'll be able to get home safely. However they were stuck there for a month with depleting rations and eurylochus, second in command, makes the decision to eat the cattle regardless of the gods' commands, effectively dooming the crew to die.

      Based on the order of the songs (you can just look it up) I'd definitely say Thunder Bringer is after the whole "Everyone (but Odysseus, cause he has a brain and mostly uses it) kills and eats the sacred cows (despite it being their ONE job not to)" incident.
      Especially because Thunder Bringer takes place after the Underworld saga, but before Love in Paradise.

    I love the idea that "I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but it's no longer you." Refers to how he has to change and abandon his mercy, empathy and mindset in order to make it home so in essence- Odysseus makes it home at the cost of himself, I only just sorta realised that as I was watching this. I never read The Odyssey so I don't know if its in the older works or if it's written for Epic but it's honestly so brilliant

    Everytime I see Tiresias I think of his mythology. He saw 2 snakes boning and was so freaked out he killed them so the gods turned him into a woman. He got turned back like 7 years later.
    Another fun myth, Zeus and Hera were arguing about who liked sex more, men or women, so they came to ask Tiresias since he was the only one who experienced both and he said 'if it was on a scale of 1 to 10, men have 1 and the women have the other 9' and Hera didn't like that so she blinded him
    Blind prophet! Fun stories

    • @yf-n7710
      @yf-n7710 6 месяцев назад +35

      I thought he just poked them with a stick, and then the change back was when he came across the same two snakes having sex again, and poked them with a stick again? Maybe it's different versions of the myth.
      I mean, I know there's definitely multiple versions of the "blinded" story. In some it's Zeus who blinds him because he didn't like the answer, in others it's Hera.

    I really love how you added the foreshadowing about the cattle and what happens in consequence to that regardless the warnings they receive. Not to mention when he gets to Ithaca but it's "not really him" as Athena's help makes him look like a complete stranger. It's a super clever way to show everything that he's got coming! Love how you portrayed it! ^^

    • @Pjo_Fan_And_A_Winion
      @Pjo_Fan_And_A_Winion 5 месяцев назад +10

      And it’s also a metaphor for how he has to let go of his empathy and “turn off his heart” and learns that ruthlessness is in fact, mercy in some cases. In that sense, not only is the prophet foreshadowing Athena’s help disguising him, but also his personality (you could say, don’t really know how to describe it. I’m bad at describing lol) because he left home as an empathetic man and wants to have mercy for everyone but he returns mostly the opposite.

  • @schmad2048
    @schmad2048 9 месяцев назад +307

    I love all the little bits of foreshadowing! And how Tiresias' cloak seems to "wisp" around him giving him that semi-inhuman vibe! It's neat seeing Odysseus seemingly "accept" what he's being told at the end. In a way, he's become so tired that he's not really gonna be questioning what prophecies tell him anymore because if it means he'll get home, he'd do anything.

    0:38 love how you used Helio's sacred cow for the betrayal part because Odysseus' men betrayed his command/trust and did the one thing they weren't supposed to.
    Honestly an alternate title for The Odyssey could really be called "Odysseus' crew were idiots", cause there's only one time where they're smarter than Odysseus, but the rest of the time Odysseus has to clean up their messes and save their butts (until he finally can't).
    Anyway my original point before I started hating on his crew was going to be I don't think I've seen any other Tiresias animatic/any other epic song animatic put in as many details from the Odyssey as you do. I can really tell how much effort you're putting into these, especially by respecting the source material. Fantastic work as always!

    • @iliketea1427
      @iliketea1427 6 месяцев назад +38

      @@dragonstouch1042 Ikr?! They never learn! Most of Odysseus’ crew makes the worst decisions without Odysseus there;
      -immediately trusting the lotus eaters to eat the lotus and having to be saved by Odysseus
      -opening the bag Aeolus gave them despite the specific orders not to, the moment Odysseus isn't looking.
      -immediately trusting Circe (despite every other being on the other islands trying to kill them) AND HAVING TO BE SAVED BY ODYSSEUS AGAIN.
      -finally eating Helios' sacred cows DESPITE THE SPECIFIC ORDERS NOT TO AGAIN, THE MOMENT ODYSSEUS ISN'T LOOKING AGAIN.
      Then of course they get killed and Odysseus is stranded for 7 years because of their actions. I really feel bad for Odysseus here cause most of the time he was trying so hard to get them all home alive and safe (Odysseus does genuinely care for his crew: when the crew turns back from pigs to humans Odysseus actually embraces them and cries), but because of all the crew's mistakes they got delayed so much which only made things worse.
      Hell even Odysseus’ mistake of taunting the Cyclops didn't cost them as much (cause in the Odyssey the majority of the crew is killed by cannibal giants; Poseidon hardly does anything to the crew except wish them bad luck and briefly attacks Odysseus after escaping Calpyso, but Poseidon then gives up and lets him go).

    I think this is one of the best depictions of a story where the viewer’s journey throughout the story is watching the main character fall so far from where they were at the start. Often times, I end up feeling bad for the character but it’s hard for me to find stories that break the main character without either (a) making me hate them or (b) making their brokenness truly impactful. With this musical, not only do I really like Odysseus, but my heart breaks for him constantly. I feel bad for every new tragedy that happens, and it deepens the further it goes on. That’s truly impressive for a story, let alone a purely soundtrack based musical, to pull off. Massive fan of Mr. Rivera’s work

    This song always tears me up inside and this animatic didn't help (beautiful work, as always) BUT I think summing this up as the prophet telling Odysseus he has to get on that sigma male grindset to get home is infinitely funnier so that's what I'm interpreting this as from now on

    I was reading the part in the book where Eurylochus was like “I’d rather die at sea than die here of starvation” and beside it someone wrote “do you agree?” And then everyone else who rented the book wrote the same thing under it and now there’s just a line of like, five “do you agree?”’s

    Maybe it's the beard/hood/staff combo, but I get serious Merlin vibes from the animatics of this song, especially the lines "I am the prophet with the answers you seek / Time, I've unlocked it / I see past and future running free"...
    Like a sort of combo of the idea of Merlin living through time backwards, and what you'd find if you spoke to him from his prison (cave/tree/glass tower/whatever) for a divination.
    Also, I know the line "But that's not a world I know" has deeper references to Odysseus' altered identity (internal or external) in getting home (as well as the fact that this entire musical -like all variations - is arguably a sort of AU from the original Homeric Odyssey), but also...
    Well, yes, Tiresias. That would be at least partly because you are *dead* and you can no longer 'know' the living world as it goes on.

    I genuinely have no words. But this is what I would...
    Change......
    NOTHING! Also didn't mean to scare you. Wolfy, I love all of animatics.❤
    Also, I could never do something this. That is why I admire all animators.

    imma make some guesses to the foreshadowing:
    0:31 "I see a song of past romance" Could be referencing There Are Other Ways where Odysseus tells Circe about how Penelope was his motivation
    0:33 "I see the sacrifice of man" Could be either talking about Remember Them where Polites and some of the men were crushed by Polyphemus' Club or Scylla where more men died (as alluded to by Eurylochus in Mutiny.)
    0:37 "I see portrayals of betrayal" Judging by the video, pretty sure this is about Odysseus' Men killing Helios' Cows when Odysseus most likely warned them not to. (We haven't seen this stated in the snippets yet but was stated in the Odyssey. And also this is most likely the reason why Thunder Bringer happens.)
    0:41 "And a brother's final stand" 100% Mutiny, the battle snippet for Mutiny is literally called "A Brother's Final Stand"
    0:45 "I see you on the brink of death" Either during the Charybdis battle or somewhere Get In The Water, I'm guessing it would be near the end of the Charybdis fight since his raft would be heavily damaged.
    0:48 "I see you draw your final breath" Looking at the video and the lyric, It's most likely when Odysseus sneaks into the palace as an old beggar and tried to keep a low profile.
    0:51 "I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but it's no longer you" Referring to how Odysseus must accept that he must show ruthlessness in order to protect the ones he loves. (Also could be a play on how Odysseus comes home disguised as an old beggar.)
