Wonderful pyrography renderings! Liked BOTH feathers with and without color..each offers its own feel and experience in viewing. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and tutorials! Mollie
I love this video! I'm a beginner to wood burning. You're work is beautiful! I love the feathers with or without color, for me as an artist, color is a must, so the colored feathers would be my favorite of the two. Please keep your videos coming! 🥰
They turned out beautifully! I do like color on woodburnings as long as it doesn't take away from the actual burning and enhances it. IMO the color enhances the feathers.
Until recently I have not ever added color to my wood burnings. I decided to add color recently and I didn't like the way it came out. I went in search of what I did wrong and what I should be using to add a little color to my wood burnings. Your video gave me a little perspective. Thank you.
I like to decorate wooden boxes, so much of my work consists of designs, borders, etc rather than detailed pictures. I often employ a "heavy-handed" technique that gives a more 3D presentation, and I almost always add some color. I particularly like to use enamel colors on the unburnt areas, and stains are interesting because they take differently on various types of burns. Your work showed me that I could be adding color to intricate pieces and not losing the burned details. Thanks a lot, very nice work!
I just got a wood burning kit for Christmas and have spent over an hour watching just random wood burning videos to get tips... thank you for your video I like both of your feather art pieces before and after colour but I think the colour one is amazing! Great work and thanks for some inspiration I can't wait to dive in and start creating things!
Very beautiful. I’ve used acrylic paint, ink from pens nmarkers, colored pencils and crayons are my favorite because of the blending effects. I’m about to do a Jewry box top of a drawing I did over 30 years ago. I love mixing the bold contrast of the wood burning with a slash of color to make it pop.
I am stoked! That looks great, I am about to begin working on pyrography. I know I have a long way to go, just got a beginner set with the soldering iron style, but I really really like the watercolor and pencil additions that'll make the design really pop.
I am torn, I like the color but I see what you meant about the color taking away from your burning the shading. You are very skilled and your video has helped me out a lot. I am new to trying woodburning. I had tried it years ago but gave up too soon and am giving it another go.
I love them both ways, but I'm really excited about the coloring. I'm just waiting for my wood burning tool to come in the mail. I can't wait to get practicing. One day I hope to be talented as you at wood burning but for now it's something I want to do just for fun. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say, and I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos :) are you a member of the pyrography Facebook page? They’re a great community for learning and sharing your art :)
Thank you! :) I used to not want to add colour to my pyrography, because I didn’t want to cover the burning, but I have been doing it more and more lately and it’s been fun. So I think it was worth the risk :)
thank you :) I think colour is definitely worth it to try. It gives you another thing to play with in your art, and I've been pretty happy with it in my burnings so far
Your work is beautiful and you're very talented. And your paints are available I took a picture a snapshot from the video and ran it through Google lens and it gave me a whole bunch of options including Amazon
You have …..talent and a loot a lot of creativity…Amazing skills …thank You ………about your colors hummm you have the tendency paint serious colors …look at the birds how they got colors and then your job will be incredible natural and gorgeous and amazing …..the bottom line. And to add, I like both. To each their own I say. I'm getting more into wood burning and most prefer non-colored. Do you wood carve with a rotary also? If so I wood love to see that. How do I send a picture to you of my first wood burn picture, I'd like to share it with you. I saw a comment about your skin, I have psoriasis and the arthritis that comes with it. I'm adding you to my favorite videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! :) For sealing in the colour I use Varathane Diamond wood finish, it’s water based and doesn’t yellow. The most important thing is to use a spray on finish because a brush on finish would smudge the colours. And I bought a rotary tool to try that but I haven’t used it yet lol Sorry to hear about your hands, I know it’s common to get arthritis with psoriasis, so I hope that doesn’t happen too soon for me. Nice to hear you can still make art though :) If you’d like to send me a picture you can send me a message on my Facebook page or Instagram :)
Thank you :) Any inexpensive burner is good for a beginner in my opinion, just look for one with a temperature control, and be wary of cheap machines on Amazon. A few brands that people commonly trust are walnut hollow, colwood, and Razertip.
It looks wonderful with colors. Very impressive. I started doing wood burning when I was a kid, using a magnifying glass and sun light, and recently upgraded to an electrical tool; so, thanks for the instructions (I hope you didn't burn your right hand with the wood burner?).
Gorgeous, both ways, but the color is super fun! I'm working on a woodburning project for some items that will be handled regularly (think custom craft supplies). Do you think the watercolor or crayon pencils would hold up to handling in that way? Would they transfer color to fibers or hands? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, even if just speculation from your experience. Thanks!
Thank you 😊 For something that’s going to be handled often the water colours would definitely smudge and transfer since they are reactivated with water, and I think coloured pencils would too with heavy use. I’m not sure, but I feel like a few coats of a wood finish/clear coat would solve this problem, just make sure to pick a spray on one since a brush on finish will smudge your colour too. I like water based clear coats that dry crystal clear, I find they change the look of the wood less. Some other options to colour your burnings are wood stain, acrylic paint, or permanent markers. I haven’t used any of these but I’ve seen other artists use them and I think they’re probably more durable. Still a good idea to clear coat them though. :) Hope this helps
I like bith, honestly, I don't color burnings because they look so great without it and the coloring covers it up so much, it almost seems like you should just draw it instead. Looks great though! :)
Thanks :) I always felt that way too. I don't want my burnings to just become paintings because I think that defeats the purpose, So I try to make sure you can still see the burning under the colour, but sometimes I don't succeed :) Colouring a burning is always a risk cause you could make it worse rather than better lol
I have been drawing for most of my life and just got into wood burning a couple days ago and absolutely love it and one of the reasons is the natural color of the wood and the burn. Maybe I can stain and finish in the end but the main reason why I love it is the natural color.
Very nice either way. There are soo many awesome watercolor companies these days. I also have a little travel set i really like by Sakura Koi but I don't think they make it anymore. Typically I like holbein, Rembrandt talens, and M. Graham. Also there's a color by Daniel Smith called Buff Titanium. Gives a cool aged look to the paper and it's also sold as a powder for that aged look I digress for a living😜
So does using watercolor not raise wood grain and make it a bit fuzzy? I would really like to try it on my piece, but am a bit anxious about it. Thank you for sharing your abilities and skills. God bless.
First time seeing your videos. My daughter's name is Feather. Your work is beautiful... those Feather's are wonderful either way. I like both colored and plain. I just subscribed to your channel. 👍🤙
Thanks! 😊 Sorry I missed it before, I just a saw your other comment. You can do a cutting board, the wood has to be unfinished meaning no paints stains or sealer when you burn it because those things would be toxic to burn. After you’re done burning it though you can add colour and seal it with whatever you like. I haven’t done anything that needs to be food safe, but you’ll want to choose a product that doesn’t change the look or colour of the wood too much when you apply it because that can cover some of your shading. The best way to do that if you don’t already have something in mind is to buy small amounts of a few things and test them on the sort of wood you will be using.
Un trabajo precioso!!!, Gracias por compartir este vídeo, lis cambios de velocidad sin geniales porque nos permite ver en detalle el movimiento del pirograbador...muchas gracias, eres una artista 👏👏🥰
Okay, the first few seconds where you show your channel name & there's a chime... Yeah I got up & went to the front door cause I thought my Ring app was chiming & someone was at the door 😆 Anyway, I'm interested in pyrography so I've been watching videos. These feathers are beautiful & I really can't say I prefer one over the other!
Is it easier to burn with wire pen you are using? I am just learning and the one I bought is very long so I have a hard time shaping my projects, I like to he colours, do you use something after to protect it?
I find this kind of pen easier, but it’s also more expensive. I started out with one like what you’re using (I think) and I did a lot of burnings with it before I switched. And thanks, I use a Varathane outdoor clear coat, (the brush on one for my regular burnings and the aerosol one for my burnings with colour).
How beautiful!! I've been making flower presses and researching a lovely way to put my art on them. I think a little bit of woodburning would be perfect and I love the addition of soft colour. I'm going to have to try this. Can I ask, would you seal the art afterwards and if so, what is the best sealer? I think I will have to sub!! ♥
Thank you!! 😊 That’s sounds so pretty, if you’re working on paper you can always burn that too, it’s exactly the same process :) for sealing my burnings (on wood) I like to use Varathane. I like it because it’s water based and it doesn’t change the colour of the wood. I’ve had finishes before that make the wood darker which really took away from the burning. It’s also easy to clean out of brushes. For burnings on paper I don’t finish them with anything. Also, any burning will fade faster if you put it in direct sunlight :)
@@WildwoodStudio Thank you so much for all your help. I've been binge watching your vids and learning a great deal....also enjoying your chats!! I can't wait for my burner to arrive and have a try!! 😍
Yes, I think it’s always a good idea to seal your burnings. If you add colour it’s better to use a spray varnish so you don’t smudge it. I have a video about how I seal my art if you’d like to check it out :)
I have another question what's the difference between the traditional wood burner and what you use thank you for answering my other comment and thanks for reading this one
As far as I can tell there are two main types: there’s the more inexpensive ones like the Walnut Hollow versa tool, which looks more like a soldering iron and is a bit bulkier, that particular one has a temperature control which makes it better than ones that don’t, but the downsides are how big it is and the fact that the tips screw on and off of one tool so you have to wait for it to cool if you want to switch tips. Lots of people still use this type to make very beautiful things though (Minisa Robinson’s Pyrography is a good example), and I have one for larger projects. The one I’m using in my videos is a Razertip dual burning system, (razertip isn’t the only brand that offers this sort of thing). Basically it’s a main box with a temperature control that plugs into different pen shaped burners. there are variations of this but basically the advantages are that the pens are smaller and easier to handle, it’s better for detail work, and it’s generally easier to switch between different shaped tools because it cools faster. The downside is that these types of machines tend to be much more expensive. If you want more info on this there’s lots of articles online about it, but I hope this helps :)
Wonderful pyrography renderings! Liked BOTH feathers with and without color..each offers its own feel and experience in viewing. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and tutorials! Mollie

I've looked and there is so many answers. What do you use if your going to use color to hold the color in. Clear coat, lacquer....
And to add, I like both. To each their own I say. I'm getting more into wood burning and most prefer non-colored. Do you wood carve with a rotary also? If so I wood love to see that. I’ve never made anything for food use. I think you can find food safe clear coats and wood finishes. I don’t know how the colour would hold up though

What name is the surface which you used for this work..?
I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you mean. It’s on a wooden artist panel, I think birch?
Love Both.
What woodburner/nibs did you use for this effect? I like the crisp straight burns you were able to achieve
I use a Razertip dual burning system, and for the specific pens, I used the spoon shader for the shading and the knife tip pen for the thinner lines.
