Consider the Source is one of my favorite bands, and I was over-the-moon to see that Charles was doing a video on your otherworldly talent. A true original and master in bass! Keep up the amazing work!
@@CharlesBerthoud i m an huge fan of your playing charles since a long time ! i follow you !! i m teacher in france the number ONE about tapping in my country !!
@CharlesBerthoud was gunna mention this.. lol kids been bending my mind for 14ish years in consider the source but mono is sick af more my style soo cool to see my guy getting some recognition
Consider the Source is amazing, and while the guitar is deservedly the star there, I've always been really impressed by the bass as well. Wasn't aware of his solo stuff, so need to check that out now
Seen John Ferrara live several times and I gotta say he’s the most mind blowing musician I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing and hearing in real life. Everything he plays is incredibly fast and often in odd time signatures, and both his tapping and slapping techniques are perfected to a T. I hope he gains some good exposure from you highlighting him because he deserves to be world famous!
Its not seth moutal who is playing those notes on the piano like pedal. John Is doing it while playing the tapping part. he has a video on Scott's bass lessons' channel about it. and you can see it in lives and the music video for Enemies of Magick by Consider the source
It's mesmerizing to see John in a live setting. Dude can play like that for hours at times. Saw Consider the Source a couple of times. They are unlike anything out there.
So crazy to see John all these years after I met him. My band opened for Consider the Source almost a decade ago and I was absolutely floored by his playing.
I chuckle as I watch John play and his body is moving and really getting into it, and then Charles plays and he is fairly still and ho hum just another day at the office.
OH my God YOU HAVE TO MENTION CONSIDER THE SOURCE, one of the most awesome bands of our time, i played two shows with them in Asheville, NC and New York city, they kick so much ass you should not leave them out of the conversation. John and the others in that band are phenoms and need to be recognized.
I see his band Consider the Source every time they pass through! All three incredible musicians.. I'm seeing John's other band Mono Means One for the first time soon
Got to chat with John for a bit after a Consider The Source set here in Upstate NY! One of the best dudes and his play style has always been one of my favorites. Excellent video!
I always laugh when players of Charles caliber say, "Let's see if I can play along." We KNOW you can play along, Charles 😊. Really glad you added harmonic analysis to this rather than merely copying Mr. Ferrara, and kudos to him for a really cool composition!
Thanks Charles! I really liked the breakdown, and being introduced to another amazing bassist. Another bassist I'd love to see you cover sometime is Aram Bedrosian.
John is a great guy, I was lucky enough to have lessons over Skype with him. His approach was far different to anyone else I had seen. There was an Instagram post he made years and years ago which was the precursor to Ben Franklin's Hair which absolutely blew me away.
Watching the breakdown of this is like...yeah....sure.... Feels like asking Neil DeGrasse Tyson about an eclipse and he breaks out a chalkboard and starts writing out physics equations.
I love this. New music thats amazing and a nice breakdown for the string player in me :) your string selection for notes imo is better in the main riff, less tight, more relaxed .. or maybe im suffering from camera angle
There’s a really awesome old video of a bassist named Gustavo Dal Farra busking. That would definitely be cool to see you break down something of his for sure
Man, it would be great to see you break down the tapping section of the song The Horse by A Wilhelm Scream. Brian is playing bass in a punk band like no one else and deserves much more credit.
Wow nice 1 dude I really needed that tap thing to lvl up! much love + Thank you iam betting this is exactly what i need if i ever finish the current riff haha 🤘great that this is free 👍👍👍
Matteo Mancuso - Their bass player seems quite skilled. Plus, id love to hear what you think of his unique style as many consider him to be one of the greatest guitars players of all time (Steve Vai etc). Their bassist is incredible too. I'd love to hear your opinion of their unique style.
Hey Charles, Grant Stinnett has begun playing bass again and has suggested me to "flood" your comments in a nice way to ask for a collab with you again :D
as an amateur, i couldn't tell who was playing when charles attempted playing the piece while showing john's footage side by side... since the drums were still going, it just sounded like the audio was all from john's footage... might be some sorta visual-auditory illusion or something, but my brain couldn't identify/detect charles' playing at all, with the dual footage.
Genuinely just clicked on the video thinking "Is that the guy from Consider the Source? Can't be, surely... can it?" And it was! Amazing, would love to see them live (come play the UK sometime! :) )

@1:13 Why am I hearing B instead of C after the C# (isn't that a whole step? I know you only moved down a half step on the fretboard, but the sound was a whole step)?
Probably has something to do with what you're listening on. Try listening with headphones (or anything different from what you're listening on). The note is definitely C.
Great job as usual ;) 2 others great bassist that you can check for soloing: Aram bedrosian (going under or A dark light) and Franck Hermany (Ibanez EHB demonstration) :)
I just got myself fretless five string bass, HarleyBenton. I have made two pieces with sire bass and this new one. Today I may try something like this. (I have no skills, I just love to play around, uh, and I do not know how to edit tracks, Be warned).
My question as someone who doesn't know the anything about the bassist in question is, do we think he's intentionally playing a half step above and below or is he just playing so fast that that none of us can actually hear the dissonance because it's so fleeting?

I came to say the exact same thing - CtS are absolutely the band I tell people to check out ALL the time :D
saw them live for the first time about a year and a half ago. such an amazing trio.
It looks very easy when you play it! I think that your tapping has no limits 💫 amazing as always Charles
Charles hands/fingers are moving very efficiency.
It reminded me old 80's King Crimson , which always is a good thing
I’ve known John for well over a decade and I am totally psyched to see this!! You really did crush this piece 🤘🥰

John Ferrara busy tapping riff sounds like he’s doing King Crimson double guitar lines. But on bass😊
Its sad you're seemingly the only person here making this comparison. King Crimson is the most underappreciated band ever.
