Undervolt is a must for any gaming laptop.I believe some manufacturers don't allow it because they are fearing that their product's lifetime will be too long and they won't be able to sell their upcoming products as they expect.
idk if im on a grind or something. I never needed undervolting, other than the time my CPU was running at upwards of 90c, but that doesnt count since that was a problem that occured a month into owning it and was fixed by me after 3 days from a fan cleanout
@@speedygabriel1 so why tf lock it in the BIOS? Why not create a software which enables us to lock it or unlock it? Intel truly is one of the dumbest companies I have ever seen in my life.
@@BobOfAllTrades hey bob. I have a question. May I know how do i determine the perfect power limit values? Like what tests to do etc. Sorry for this noob qn, I'm new to laptops
I watched this video and honestly did not expect much to change in my laptop's thermals. But I was wrong on so many levels, undervolting my GPU made such a positive impact on my CPU's thermals. It was almost a 10 degree difference on both of my cpu and gpu without sacrificing much performance. Definitely will watch more of your videos!
Bob Of All Trades Hi throttlestop got an update and we can set a custom prochot offset, I experimented with my laptop and on a prochot of 85 I can still hit the boost clock of 4.2ghz with a sustained frequency of 3.9 ghz ( base clock is 2.5ghz) which is a lot better than lowering my PL1 and PL2 and/or locking the frequency since in my case if I lock the cpu at 3.7 ghz I still hit 90 degrees. Because of my limited knowledge on this kind of things I find it weird that the laptop can maintain 3.9ghz (unlocked up to 4.2ghz) at 85 degrees prochot but when locked at 3.7ghz and even lower pl1 and pl2 I still hit 90 degrees. Hope you can look into this and give your opinion. :) Edit: I also removed the undervolt of my GPU during my tests.
Severely reducing my power draw has saved my laptop. Unbelievable results. Wow. 85c in AAA titles with 90c+ spikes to a steady 63c, with minimal performance loss. Thank you!!
in my Dell G3, when the updated BIOS disabled undervolting, reverting to the older BIOS was also disabled; but resetting the BIOS to defaults enabled CPU undervolting again ;)
Thank you Bob for the information regarding the TPL and GPU undervolt! I was able to reduce the CPU and GPU temperatures of my 2020 HP Pavilion 16.1 gaming laptop.
I followed along with your undervolting guide a while back on my HP Omen 15 (2020, Ryzen CPU) before deciding not to mess with anything as it's running really well and I'm not confident enough that I really know what I'm doing. Enjoy the content regardless

This is my last ditch effort. I’ve got a ROG laptop with a i7 8750H, and I was running on BIOS v314, until I realized I was overheating because my GPU undervolt was not being applied. So I checked bios updates and found v315, released last month. Great, I though, until I undervolted the gpu successfully, only to thermal throttle on the cpu during a graphics benchmark. I go there, and guess what? No undervolting happening here. I don’t have much hope either. The i7 8750H is a 45W professor, and even when limiting to that wattage, I’m hitting 90°c on idle because the system randomly pulls a 4.0Ghz All-core boost for no apparent reason (speed shift is set to 128, only monitoring apps open in background)
I had my laptop undervolted months before this "Plundervolt" had became a thing. And I am surprised that no one had mentioned this before. Not even Dave2D.

@@bulldockmansion5867 Is it 90c all the time or only when your under load ie gaming or running a benchmark? If its 90c all the time thats not good in the long run. Bob has great tutorials on how to apply Thermal paste and undervolt the CPU also GPU. check the playlist.
Just a heads up with that Thicc-15, you probably already know though. The lower m.2 is limited to PCIE 2.0 whereas the one with the wifi card under it is 3.0. Can't wait for your review of that machine!
locking the undervolting on my dell XPS 9560 has made it unusable for anything more than general browsing/emails/youtube. This machine is was insane 4k screen, 32gb ram, 2tb ssd, i7-7700, with gaming capabilities 1050ti.......now it's all useless due to crazy thermal throttling. (even after thermal pasting it.) Just going to harvest it for parts now.
Basically same thing happened. Was prepping for Windows 11 update - and updated the BIOS, and now I'm stuck with no undervolt and icreased temps under load. That said, repasting and lowering the TPL to 35-45 did help keep temps under 40 at idle/medium load. So no 50/60 spikes watching youtube now.
Would love to see you make a ryzen undervolting (in case there is the option) and amd radeon notebook gpu undervolt guide in near future. Great content as always Bob.
Undervolting makes your laptop unreliable, thats why laptops don't come with undervolting by default. Acer Helios 300 2019 had an undervolt preset, however it is applied only when enabling the turbo mode. I think its time to stop considering CPU undervolting. (GPU undervolting may be OK)
@@PremVijayVelMani undervolting is not about pushing the offset slider to the left as much as possible just because the laptop cpu can handle that much of an undervolt. It must be stress tested on all cores and threads before considering the chosen undervolt value as the best for the given system. Using Throttlestop's inbuilt benchmark tool does serve the purpose really well.
@@sm13752 Yeah I know, however the silicon may change slightly over time (or due to some other factors). So we need to keep doing the stress tests regularly to make sure nothing bad happens while doing important work. This is all time consuming. Rather than doing all this I would pay more for a laptop that has better thermals without any undervolt. Even Intel is forcing OEMs to disable voltage controls and improve thermals for its 10th gen laptops.
Question: How much of all this is available for the ryzen cpu (especially this year's 4000 series) Undervolting the gpu is of course available but what about the other solutions

GPU doesn't show me the voltage on afterburner. But I can see the clock speed and based on that I can guess the voltage based on the curve. Did a flatline at 1200mhz and I hope cuda cores chose the possible lowest voltage they can run on. Decreased temps from 80 to 65 based on this simple trick... Throtle stop is hard to guess, even if you cannot see on hardware info, you definitely feel when you had frozen your pc with too much undervolt or just check package power. Also what i hate is that laptop shares same heatsinks with cpu and gpu, they don't have different exhousts - a blessing and a curse. Because now my gpu doesnt heat up, my cpu doesn't throttle which increased cpu, gpu performance... Now i onlu need to change thermo pasta. Too bad liquid metal is toxic for laptops, if you throw it down the floor, all liquid metal will just get out and splash electronics...

I have a Dell G7 7790 that I repasted but still runs fairly toasty and had this problem as well. About a week ago I got sick of the inability to undervolt and went ahead and downgraded my BIOS to allow undervolting again. I know this is kinda out of the topic but I wanted to ask if you have faced something like this before, I have a mech g2rx with the 9750h and 1660ti after a format I installed Throttle stop did a small undervolt of -100mv and ran Cinebench the laptop will not clock above 3.3-3.4 at all. I checked the temps they were under 80 and it was running on turbo profile in the control center , I tried reseting throttle stop lowering the EPP to 0-1-10-32-64-128 and nothing changed, tried raising the power limit to 107-70 and it will saturate 65w but still at those same clocks, tried lowering the wattage to 70-45 and the undervolt to -125mv and still the same outcome. It will boost to 4ghz all core on 50% usage if the app is not hammering the CPU but it won't budge on 100% load and the problem is the laptop is being used in content creation and those few mhz are kinda important. Bought an omen 15 with the 2060gtx and same i7cpu 10750H (as in your 17in review) Out of the box it ran a little hot in games where the max fans would kick in, and 98deg C in benchmarks on CPU. Using your info I was able to get the the CPU and the GPU running in the 60s deg C while gaming with auto fans & omen performance setting - GPU voltage pinned with afterburner, every else stock, and muted the CPU with throttlestop at 3.89Ghz with CL1 30watts, CL2 38watts, max x40 I got room to increase in future, but lot to be said for the cool & quiet gaming. I hope someone smart hacks a way to be able to undervolt these CPUs, thanks again!
I want to ask you, how can I confirm whether my laptop can't undervolt? I have the omen 17-cb1005nu. It's with the annoying i7-10750H. I made all the updates of bios + drivers. However, when I use throttlestop, and I do offset voltage -30, I can see in HWInfo under IA Overclocking that my voltage offset is -30mV. Also, when I try to test it with CinebenchR20 and looking at the max voltage by sensors, I think it does effect the voltage. So my question is - can you tell me the best way to figure out whether my voltage is locked or actually I can change it? Thanks!

Just one question...why? If it doesnt thermal throttle then...why? I get it that its useful when you undervolt and get some performance by running the cpu a bit cooler...by in this case why do this?
I have noticed that disabling Intel turbo in throttlestop lowers cpu thermals significantly on many laptopts that I have used and tested while gaming. The great thing about it is, that it has not lowered the amount of fps in games substantially, usually the change is insignificant. This has worked like a charm for me while I have been gaming. I have seen changes of over 15 degrees celsius in demanding titles. For me Intel turbo is pretty useless, so I turn it off. I care more about thermals than I do about maximum fps. Thermals are the key, I agree wholeheartedly. Plus if one uses throttlestop, one can just click the turbo back on, easy as that. I have throttlestop always running in the background. Just wanted to voice my opinion.
Wow, this comment saved me. I wasn't able to actually do the undervolting because of some change in BIOS or something, but when I turned off the intel turbo I saved almost 20C in CPU temp!
@@myquestformeaning8251 Depending on what game is being played, disabling turbo will lower fps somewhat (cpu intense games), but mostly its marginal so it doesnt bother me.

Change thermal paste and -0.150 undervolt + cooling pad did not help much, my temps where between 90-100ºC but at least it was not shutting down. Sold it and bought the Lenovo Legion Y740 with I7 9750H and a RTX 2080 max-q and my tems are stable on 80-90ºC without any modification. I can't see why you are telling the that HP is good in terms of thermal performance. I think I will also change the paste on Lenovo to lover more my temps and do some undervolt.
If you go back and watch my HP reviews, the only one I had that was close to yours did have very high temps. I had to Undervolt the CPU and GPU to get it tolerable. The next one had the 9750h and 2060 with the second gen of that chassis design. Its software allowed for maximum fan speed and it did much better. Then we have the newest Omen review with Ryzen 4800h and 1660 ti and it too allows for maximum fan speed within its software.

PL1 and PL2 for intel CPUs is Turbo ! No i will not recommend you disable turbo whole, but lower these measurements of PL1 and PL2 which is PL1 = Turbo boost, PL2=Short time duration of turbo boost. Lower it via Intel XTU if you have Intel CPU and definitely you should see difference in thermals.
Mine is locked on the FIVR configuration.. Can't change anything. I have a Predator Triton with i7 11800h and a RTX3070. @@rifatul depends on wattage as said, but the 1660Ti (mobile) isn't that far behind a 2060 (mobile). If u can afford the 2060, go for it as it supports DLSS & RT, which hopefully will be supported in more games down the road and thus should provide better perf in newer titles imo.

Hey bob, I was windering what can I tune aside from the power limits in the 10th gen i7 intel laptops?
Undervolt is a must for any gaming laptop.I believe some manufacturers don't allow it because they are fearing that their product's lifetime will be too long and they won't be able to sell their upcoming products as they expect.
RIGHT
idk if im on a grind or something. I never needed undervolting, other than the time my CPU was running at upwards of 90c, but that doesnt count since that was a problem that occured a month into owning it and was fixed by me after 3 days from a fan cleanout
they dont fear undervolting, they fear overvolting lmao
@@speedygabriel1 so why tf lock it in the BIOS? Why not create a software which enables us to lock it or unlock it? Intel truly is one of the dumbest companies I have ever seen in my life.

Shame on intel.
We’re seeing more of this lately 👍
Absolutely agree, I have the CPU in the video and I'm so bloody angry about the locks on this CPU. There's no way I'm buying Intel next time.
Apparently it’s not Intel that’s doing this. It’s up to the manufacturers to allow this. Even intel’s QC7 whitebook has undervolting in their bios.

Fun stuff 🤙
Edit: I also removed the undervolt of my GPU during my tests.

Severely reducing my power draw has saved my laptop. Unbelievable results. Wow. 85c in AAA titles with 90c+ spikes to a steady 63c, with minimal performance loss.
Thank you!!
@avigamer7285 He literally said reducing power draw meaning power limitations.
in my Dell G3, when the updated BIOS disabled undervolting, reverting to the older BIOS was also disabled; but resetting the BIOS to defaults enabled CPU undervolting again ;)

Great content as always Bob.
This is not possible right now. It can’t be done I talked about that video several months ago got lit up about it
Undervolting makes your laptop unreliable, thats why laptops don't come with undervolting by default.

Hi...why intel block undervolting software like xtu and throttlestop? I have rog scar iii G731gv and i cant any more to undervolt.

Hello, I'm new to your channel and so far love your videos. I had a HP Omen 15 1010dc with an I7 8750H and a RTX 2060 and I had my cpu temps going up to 100ºC+ and the laptop just shut down.
@@BobOfAllTrades For example, the new BIOS on Lenovo Legion Y740 I can't even under-volt in BIOS because of the Intel security update. I go to advanced BIOS mode and set -0.160 offset and save changes. Boot is ok and I have those applied but If I shut down or restart the setting reset in the BIOS. Maybe I will need to try replace thermal paste for my lenovo to see If I have some temp gains. PS: I tried install the previous BIOS version but it does not allow me saying that I have an newer version :P
wait, I thought this was Johnny sins doing a tech video😂😂😂
Yeah, i got a bios update from Dell the other day. Can no longer undervolt, and the CPU remains absolutely pegged 24/7. Hits 100C consistently. Throttlestop aint working anymore, cant adjust voltage or frequency 😢. Unfortunately, Dell really fucked me over by preventing me from going back to a previous Bios version.
Edit: dell g7, i7-8750h
Unfortunately, undervolting the GPU is locked out on my Dell G3 3579 and always has been. I'm pretty unhappy with my purchase after almost two years, I wouldn't recommend anyone get a Dell. Everything is completely locked down, you don't have control over anything, and the thermal performance is terrible.
hey bob, its weird that my dell xps 15 9570 wont allow me to thermalstop or utx utility it after i installed the onboard windows, is there a way around it?
before the reformat it was running amazingly!
Hey Bob, thanks agin for this great video. I'd like to ask you a question : Is it possible to undervolt an i5-5200u laptop cpu to lower the heat? Would this increase the performance in games (even if it is an ultrabook)? By the way, i ordered an XMG Fusion 15 thanks to your videos. Thank you man!
You probably can. I haven’t used a Broadwell U chip so start with -.050
Bob Of All Trades Alright, do you think that this would help for in game performance ? (with Gt 920m graphics card)
Philo Sopher I undervolted my i5 4210u with -0.62.5mv and yes I have seen quite a bit better thermals on my 6 year old laptop. It used to thermal throttle quite quickly when I pushed it hard previously but now it takes some time for it to throttle and I get 30-60 mins of extra battery life. I highly recommend undervolting your laptop.
Aquawater 506 Thank you ! I will definitely undervolt now.
I hit on i5-8300h -0.200mV core and 0.125mV cache I play games 71-75degress Lenovo Legion Y530 6month I stayed with 0.155mV on core and cache when gaming 80-84 degrees when gaming my processor stay stable 3.9Mhz all cores
How do windows battery performance modes interact with things like eluktroboost?
U can try uncheck virtual machine in "turn windows feature"
im having the opposite effect where the cpu is all but baking the gpu on the same heatpipes. Thought undervolting would help but goddamn asus wont even release the bios update for allowing -80mV for my model. I cant even downgrade to the previous version that allowed it because i cant find it on the website. im absolutely livid. i know its not exactly new but when you buy a 1070 you expect to still have the whole ass 1070 four years later not 60% of one with heatstroke (as in, this is the usage it is Constantly throttling to)
My acer nitro 5 doens't permit change voltage... Nothing on the all of programs with this function.... It occurs even when it's set to allow changes; it simply inhibits the program's ability to change the voltage...
Would you recommend turning off turbo boost to reduce temps? will that help longevity?
PL1 and PL2 for intel CPUs is Turbo ! No i will not recommend you disable turbo whole, but lower these measurements of PL1 and PL2 which is PL1 = Turbo boost, PL2=Short time duration of turbo boost. Lower it via Intel XTU if you have Intel CPU and definitely you should see difference in thermals.
can u please give a thermal guide for rog strix g please
Mine is locked on the FIVR configuration.. Can't change anything. I have a Predator Triton with i7 11800h and a RTX3070. It gets super hot and makes huge usage of the fans in most cases without reason... Can you please help me to understand why I cannot edit those options on my Throttlestop like you did?? Thank you.
What is locked?
Dell G5 thermal paste replacement, cooling pad and turbo boost off see's a massive 20 degree drop in temps. Not tried undervolting GPU.
Dell G5 i7 10750h RTX 2070 MQ
You went postal on that one 💪
@@BobOfAllTrades It's a great result! Fortnite at ultra settings is still well over 90fps so in my opinion no need for turbo boost or the performance mode on the G5 :)
throttlestop doesn't work for me changes nothing, 100 degrees have to return it lol
It's been happening more and more now that Windows 11 requirements are pushing people to the latest BIOS. Just updated my Dell BIOS (for Windows 11) and it's now stripped my ability to undervolt my CPU (6770HQ). Insane that Intel is pulling this crap. Limiting the power limits seem to have helped out though
Intel is not pulling this crap it is the manufacturer, in your case Dell.
How much perf loss do u have from doing the lower wattage thing
hey bob , i know this is an old video but i have a question , i tried the solution 1 and i set pl1 and pl2 to 35 and 45 , not copying your value but i have tried them too , my question is that when i stress test the cpu or play games power throttling happens , i wanted to know if thats dangerous or normall , btw with this setting my temp is way lower and i have stable fps and not much peformance lost.
Of course power throttling happens since you have throttled the power back 👍
@@BobOfAllTrades so i should avoid doing it ? my temp goes 90 without it , thanks a lot btw
@@emptycode1782 You’re not harming the chip or system. In fact, power throttling is just part of laptop life at higher wattage too. If you’re happy with the performance and thermal performance now, then I say great job, carry on 👌
@@BobOfAllTrades yeah temp and fps are perfect i just got worried about the pl1 and pl2 throttling , and now that i know its not hurting the chip then its all good , thanks a lot
My cpu is not suported on throttle stop. What can i do?
And i have i7 9750H, and my PL1 and PL2 90W. How to find out the best frequencies and TDP for 80C???
He said in the video: don't ask...

Great video Bob........I have actually noticed the new update that windows realesed that wasnt compatable with the omen x17 gtx 1080 cause i have one as well and after updating it I noticed how it kept on resetting the undervolt I had and I immediately rolled it back to previous version now all is well.
Note: - I want you to do a review on the omen x17 with the 300watt power supply that you had on the table I fell like I want to increase the power limit by flashing the bios cause my thermals at 4ghz is 71 to 85 and gpu 58 to 60 at 1825ghz which is great but why add a 300watt power supply if it is not used to about 280's to 290's........why is that?
I haven’t figured that out yet but it’s a 330 W power supply and I can’t for the life of me imagine getting anywhere close to using all of it.
@@BobOfAllTrades (330 not 300w) Exactly for one I can say that the chassis is well optimazed and you can reduce the temps by just adjusting the hight of the laptop using a cooling pad for the size of the laptop because the back plate has a really nice air intake and can give a big difference since its all around the motherboard and fans (at least on my testing). But hopefully you will do a review on the laptop I am interested on you take on this matter.
See you on your next upload thanks for the feed back appreciate it.........
hey Everyone just wanted to ask if its safe to put TPL1 @ 20W with boost on. im running 3.2Mhz @ 74C fans are really quiet too! I have RB15 Base Model 2020
Same with Alienware m17 R3 I tried 5 dif guides and can't undervolt it.
