  • Legendary guitarist and producer James Murphy stopped by the Die by the Click Podcast to talk about his projects past, present, and future. James also gave us an inside look to the recording process of so many iconic albums and candid insight into working with so many legendary bands including Death, Obituary, Agent Steel, and Testament. As well as a close call with Megadeth. James also talked about Disincarnate and his solo albums and the Spiritual Healing era Death tribute band Living Monstrosity and Death to All. James also spoke about his health issues and how he overcame them. I am extremely grateful to James and he is one of the nicest dudes in metal.

Awesome interview. Cause of Death was maybe the first death metal album I ever bought. I was more into thrash and the slower chuggy riffs and Tardy's growling while I kinda got into them, never quite fully clicked, but Murphy's menacing, melodic playing always really stood out. I must have read about Disincarnate in some magazine, maybe like Meta Militia, and bought the cassette tape right when it came out. Never saw them, but proudly wore a shirt all the time in high school and listened that album a ton. I didn't know anyone else who listened to them sadly. The riffs, especially Monarch of the Sleeping Marches were amazing. I already really liked Testament and then I found out he'd joined them and Low came out, I was stoked. IMO it was like the only *great* thrash album in that era IMO. It took the best of thrash and some elements of death metal and you could clearly hear Murphy's influence on things. It's so awesome to get all this background of what was going on from Murphy. Thank you for this interview.

Cause of Death is a great album. James has been involved in many classic and genre defining albums. I first heard James on Spiritual Healing and was instantly a fan. Disincarnate was a great tech band and IMO was ahead of its time. Testament sounded great as well and The Gathering is one of their best albums. James elevates every band he works with. Thanks for watching and the comment. Cheers!

Man, it's a shame you didn't get to talk more about his solo records and how he got to collab with devin townsend and a bunch of other legends, and how he came up with incredible tracks like "touching the earth". Plus, his time in Denmark for Konkhra's "Weed Out the Weak" with Chris Kontos. Would love it if you could get him in for an additional episode.

James has released a lot of material, and his solo records are great. Convergence is classic and was my introduction to Devin. Konkhra is also great, and I'm glad to see that they are active. I will try and ask James to come back. Don't miss Friday's podcast with Lucas Mann from Rings of Saturn.

That solo on Dog Faced Gods is amazing. To this day when i listen to it, everyone listens to it lol😅. While we're on the subject, the solo on All I Could Bleed has got to be one of the most sassy solos in history! I mean really...the "what'cha gonna do about it" attitude on that one is like a stalking Leopard 🐆

Great interview! James Murphy is my favorite death metal lead player. His playing on Spiritual Healing and Cause of Death changed how we all played death metal solos. James Murphy and Hobbs from Suffocation were my top two guys for all of 10th grade. And I love Disincarnate.

Thank you brother for the awesome content of one of my favorite guitarist who ever graced the scene of death/thrash and just metal in general .The man has such a broad resume. People now a day use the term underated so loosely but when it comes to Murphy this dude does not deserve the praise and recognition he truly deserves he's a perfectionist when you hear a Murphy solo you just know it's James Murphy same with Chuck schuldiner. Cheers brother! 🤘🤘🤘🥃

I was lucky enough to meet him in the parking lot in Golden Colorado during the Gathering tour. At the time I just thought it was a lucky encounter. But when I tell the story I remember how strange it was. I asked him for his autograph and told him that he was the best guitar player out there and that was it. At that point Steve hooked me up with Dave so I could get everyone in the bands autograph. Pure luck that I received James's signature on the demo album cover. Was lucky enough to see Disincarnate at the Milwaukee Metal Fest.
