Over 20 years later and that ps1 opening sound makes me giddy and excited. Back in 2000 hearing that used to no jokes fuel my imagination I knew I was going to experience something wonderful. As later ps2 came same loved the opening sounds they were the sounds of my 18 to mid twenties and even though I had the Snes and "SEGA" master system 2 previous the ps and sounds from them in those time will always be the sounds of youth, happiness and wonderment. Oh the first time I played abes oddysee and metal gear solid, soul reaver or vagrant story are honestly the best memories I have from that time. Price of a ps and game $300 Australian dollars memories of playing them priceless.

I was gonna say the same, but I've got a few years on you too. First console was the NES, though, so I guess flipping your console is better than the doom that was the 72-pin connector wearing out.
I never knew about this albeit I was about 3/4 years old when I had one so I would have never known hahah
yeah this was def pretty common back in the ps1 days. i kinda rolled my eyes to be honest when i found out that was the "trick" in the video.

I used to do this with the ole PlayStation 1. And Mr Glasscock is spot on with this trick. I did this before I got the PS2 back in 90s/early 2000s. 👏
I knew about this and actually it's not the laser that gets better read it's just putting less friction on the tracks that adjust the laser movement. Which wear out with time
And does this works with the PS2, too?
@@kedinamite579 no the ps2 laser just kills itself over time. Sony has known about this issue. Prolonged DVD playpack essentially wears out the read header in the laser, rendering it useless.
Building upon the mention of friction, so you're saying that there are key locations that could use a Q-tip application of lubricant or the smallest amount of a safe grease of some kind? What locations and what oil/grease type for use on 7001 and 7501 models?
@@That_Handle Sorry for the late response but actually the person that made this fix in the past they ended up using aluminum shims to go over the part that was worn out that's how it was fixed

PlayStation needs to bring back epic startup sounds and visuals like they used to. PS1, PS2 and original firmware PS3 all had an epicness on startup that really made you feel like you were about to witness something special. It's so puzzling to me why they went away with that. It's almost like a non fan designed the user interface on the new systems.
Don't forget the CD music visualizer function that started in about the 700x or 750x models. There was also the CD music swap trick allowed by certain titles after loading a track or stage once you pause it for the swap to have custom music.
Ps5 interface is fancy enough with all it's bling, animations and ambient music
@@Psych0technic Only on first time start up. After that, it's startup is bland and unforgettable
@@robertlawrence9000 the music and animation plays constantly in the background if you don't turn it off. Compared to xbox interface which is very sparse and simplistic, ps5 is the very epitome of fancy and glamorous.

US release of PS1 Sound: 10 year old me, young and hopeful, full of imagination.
US release of PS2 Sound: Early adolescents, awkward, and fades away into the background.
US Release of PS3 Sound(s): Holing a symphony of jobs, getting wrecked in games and in life, glimmers of grandeur and solace.
US Release of PS4 Sound: Bitter sweet, determined, direct.
US Release of PS5 Sound: Ominous, dreary, and often, somber. (I call it the ‘Pandemic Theme’)
Boy, they really know their OG audience.
People that lived though these times back then remember. My friends had their PS1’s upside down😆 One of my long time friends still to this day plays theirs upside down

My PS1 has been in every orientation possible. Recently stripped it down, cleaned and greased all the gears and it's 99% Ok. Plays copied games great (which is usually a bit more demanding on the laser), just with very minor FMV stutter for data stored on the outside edge of the disc. That might be more to do with the tracks being closer together on 80 min CDR rather than standard 74 min
This makes perfect sense as there are many tutorials about doing this as well as replacing the sled shims.

This was common knowledge back when it was relevant. Also, my ps1 from the first batch of North American released hardware never had this or any other issues until I retired it in 2002

I had the very first US PS1 model SCPH-1001. And I have use this Secret Trick. I learned it from a magazine article I read before my PS1 went out. Not sure which magazine it was in. It work for a short time. Tell it finally quit working at all. I did not bother getting a new CD-ROM and change it. That was much easier back then to do. I did not have the internet to do so at the time. I just got a PS1 SCPH-5001 at a local pawn shop. And it never fails and still works to this very day. Later I did get a Blue Ray ROM to place in my PS3 SLIM 160 GB that was given to me by my roommate I got on eBay. The DVD part worked. It would not play Blue Ray disc. It works great. That was much harder to replace. Yet I got done with help You Tube video.
i can't remember if i ever did this to be honest because my PS1 is the redesign and i only have maybe a few games i bought this off a friend in i think ( 2004 )for only $20 bucks he needed the money and it still has it's box too. that's how much he spent on it and he gave me a couple games but not many and i haven't really played it much. i wasn't much of a Sony fan back than not until i bought my PS2 in (2009 ) when Ghostbusters came out and i've been a fan ever since i have them all including the PS5 as well
That’s definitely different. Wish I knew about this 20 years ago. Better late than never, as I still have my PS1.
Once I replaced the cheap plastic retention clip that held the game disc on the motor spindle - using one that I pulled off of an old portable CD player I no longer used - I got quite a number of trouble-free years of additional gaming once I found the optimal height on the motor shaft to locate the retention clip for spacing the game disc relative to the laser.

I remember actually "cracking" this code when i got issues with it not being able to play certain games.
But that was by mistake actually, and countless hours doing all kinds of stuff trying to get the game running.
If i remember correctly i placed a heavy book on the ps1-door while doing something else and that did the trick.
From that day i either turned it upside down or placed something with a little weight on top of it but the upside down-method is the most effecient one.

Ahhh hearing that Final Fantasy 7 save menu sound just brought back so many memories.......including my corrupted save file on disc 3 just before the final fight with Sephiroth.......those were the good old days.

in Brazil, with unlocked PS1 and pirate discs, this was the default position. Its called gambiarra

I've been doing this for the past 2 years to play, but today I opened the console and cleaned the PCB with some PCB cleaner spray, it was sticky and disgusting in 1 area in particular, its been flawless today so far

I never had this issue but a good friend of mine had the original model with the RCA jacks on the back and he had to do the upside down trick. I miss the 90s...

Many Years ago I had borrowed playstation and starter to have problems Reading discs and I tried thinking It helped the laser getting closer o the disc and it worked 😅

I have a ps1 and the laser will not be working and reading disc until I push more the lid tray or put like a small piece of tissue above the upper right button !
Any idea of what is going on ?
I had this issue not too long ago. Resetting the system usually worked but the laser was going out so i swapped out the old drive for a new one.

This just meant that it needed the laser pots adjusted. Turning it upside down makes it so the laser lens is closer to the disc surface, so yes, it’s out of focus.
I’ve fixed hundreds of these back in the 90s, while working at several Babbage’s stores. (I’d often do it for free, right in the store, if I had another employee to work the register. :)
Another common problem was with overheating. People would often keep these systems on a carpeted floor when they played. Since the air vents are on the bottom, this would cause it to overheat. This also ties into the laser mech issue since it has plastic parts on metal “rails”, as this plastic heats, then cools, it causes the laser to get out of focus, hence the freezing at the start, skipping FMV sequences,etc.
So there’s the long, boring, explanation of it. 😊

The first ps i had was one from a used game store. The only Playstation they had was one that required this method to play discs. Needless to say, that Playstation still works to this day. It probably has 5000 hrs on it.
This old trick got me a couple of extra years out of the PS1 before it completely gave up reading discs 👍

I understood this problem myself as a 11 year old boy, I noticed that the lens felt 'loose' is all I could imagine with my mind back then. So i turned it upside down whilst nothing was in and noticed the lens moved what looked to be closer to the black frame, I just instantly thought, lets try it. I put the CD in (Was actually ff8 Disc 3) and it worked first time.. Couldn't believe it. I got my Auntie to clean the disc for me 'professionally' as she bought me it for christmas, needless to say never worked. the problem I thought it was is the material/whatever they did to the CD to make it black dissapates the lazers ability to penetrate the data easier then lets say a normal CD.

Way back in the day a younger kid deleted my spyro data. I cried for days but then a bigger kid asked what was all the fuss about and said you know you can get that data back and he went in there and schooled me on it. I was sooooo happy. This was back in 98 so I guess some people knew about this but probably just the older kids he was like 17 and I like 10.
What was his explanation on how to retrieve your data on the PS1?
@VanityStar it's been so long I couldn't accurately tell ya I remember him explaining that you could bring it back and maybe that it had to be the last file deleted lr something

I discovered this in a fit of frustration and just flipped it over ever so not gently, and wallah.
I loved how you could pull the Ridge Racer disc out after the game loaded and put in a Metallica CD and have that music incorporated into the game.

My GT2 copy had issues and wouldn't load, but when I flipped it upside down, it seemed to run fine
It is a well known method especially for the Fat PS2 models when the lens got error while reading the dual layer DVD games.
Glad I know this, now I just have to find an antique store that's selling one

I remembered this happened when I tried playing games on mine from between years 1995 to 96, I purchased another, instead of looking for this solution.
(Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal 2, and Soul Blade didn't work, maybe now I will try this for myself.)

yes and i used to tune the laser back in properly so you didnt need to turn it upside down.
wrong, it's because the laser rail is weak and/or worn out, putting it upside down takes the friction away.

I have console that works at 45 degree I am 100% sure its damaged plastic laser is very good and reads all fast and fine.
