FierceAngel Photorealism is in a weird territory because while there’s a lot of technical skill, there’s no uniqueness about it. It’s a great technical skill but it does, with good reason, beg the question of whether or not it’s true art.

This should be the motivation to paint a portrait. But do you know celebrities, especially actors? I don't see any photo realistic artists on youtube who paint their mom or grandma or close friend (or even from a live sitter as reference). It is always Kurt Cobain, will Smith or John Lennon or something like that, copied from a photo. They only go for likeniless to get their appreciation for their skills, but I think the bigger challenge is to capture the character of a person in a portrait (I mean look at the painting of the pope by Velasquez, THAT is a great portrait) I always think that people who have those crazy skills could make really great art, but they don't use the full potential they have.

The main reason why it's rare to see artist like this is because of how much time they put into it while we mostly just rush and work on our artwork from about 4 hours and call it good even though good artist could take over a week to create a masterpiece
