The issue is that if he continues to strain his voice he will lose performance over time. It's the same reason why most screaming singers tone down their music over time. The thing is if you don't use the proper technique it can go from good to worse in a matter of a year or two, instead of someone like A7X or LP that took around 5 years.

As a musician, I can vouch for them for sure. Dude its hard to play live when its like 1000 degrees and there's sweat pouring in your eyes and you desperately need a drink of water and you're physically exhausted, but you have to keep powering through giving 110% each and every song. They did a great job on this performance in my opinion!
After watching a few of their live videos, I dare say that anyone complaining about the dude's singing knows nothing about live sound, the effort it takes to perform while singing, sound production or vocals in general. He nailed it the whole way through, but no live performance will ever sound exactly like a studio cut.
Agree that he shouldn't be expected to sound incredible, however there are some artists (Trevor from Thousand Foot Krutch comes to mind) who sound almost identical live.
Read your comment before the chorus kicked in, and I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I agree he's decent, but he's pitchy as HELL, usually flat by just a little bit. And yeah everyone knows it takes effort to sing live--every band has people that run to the defense of the singer whenever they put on a lackluster, or outright bad, performance--but it's literally their job to be able to sing their own damn songs, and, at least in this video, he can't do that as well as he should be able to. Haven't checked other performances, yet.
ikantspelgud1 I think with a bit more of professional vocal training he might be able to extend his stamina, since his live performance is actually okay; but considering that should the band be heavily touring, it will be hard for him to maintain his voice. Also I think they should employ someone to redesign the suit, it's a cool idea for live performing but it doesn't look very comfortable for on-stage performance :D

the studio version requires vocal strength to keep the note at such a heavy tone without your voice cracking i can do it but it takes alot of strength and is hard on the vocal chords so him doing this live will never be as hard as the studio version but it still takes an immense amount of effort

It's amazing what they did on the album, but I knew it'd be difficult to translate when playing live. They really need 3 guys singing the harmonies, and adding a person to only run effects would be a good idea as well.

Compared to some of the live performances of other Bands I have seen, this is up there with some of the best. He does his absolute best to match the studio version and imo he does it brilliantly.

honestly i'm a woman and a mezzo-soprano and this song is difficult to sing just because you don't want to sound weak during the chorus. so no head voice. and there's a lot of emotion in the song in general and if you don't push a bit to get that to sound the song loses most of its power. the performance was great. the vocalist really pushed himself for the chorus.

Just saw them on 02/28/18. They've grown so much, they're AMAZING live. Yeah, Dustin's vocals are blown to hell by the end of the show, but you won't care. The audience has him covered, and the show they put on is immense. They do this thing with the drummer...ah, I don't want to spoil it. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do it.
