He's always been good, but he sounds less good live because he has to strain his vocals a lot. When he's doing acoustics he can relax a lot more and he can make his voice sound like the studio-recorded version if he wants, or switch it up like he sometimes does.
@@the_ruq_man agree, but still, even here he looks as if he strains alot. Normally your face should be relaxed even in high notes, if you are an advanced singer. While I can see his face muscles strain, also he sings with his eyes closed most of the time, which is totally unprofessional and indicated he is being nervous (not blaming him, starset are my favorite) But he has improved dramatically anyway and thats amazing

It's like when you're into a song, sometimes it looks like you strain your face out of effort. He strains his voice and face when live in a concert because that does take a lot of effort, but here it just seems like he's just into the song, especially when the setting is quiet and he's aided by a loud mic. As he a rock band singer, singing what I think is a rock song, it wouldn't be as interesting to see him sing if he was monotone and relaxed in his facial expression.
They had to have some top-tier internet connection to perform this well while each member is at his/her own house, or wherever it is they're performing at. Or probably some top-tier editing.

The one thing that makes me cringe every time I see them performing directly, rather than an album edit, is how their main vocalist is clearly forcing himself to sing well outside his voice range and has already done some serious damage to his vocal chords in the process. I mean you really can't argue with the result, in that it sounds amazing, but I really don't want to hear that he had to stop singing entirely because his voice was permanently ruined.
He can do alot more with his voice. I think the look you're talking about is from a style point and not neccassairly him forcing anything with his voice.
