Chris Dwyer hi ,my great great grandfather was awarded the DCM for saving five guys in trones wood,do you have a date of your grandfather being wounded and the unit he was in?
I have tracked a Private O'Neale, Service Number 306772, died 08,08,1916 of the 8th Battalion The Kings (Liverpool Regiment) buried at Guillemont Rd. The 8th were part of 164th Brigade of the 55th Infantry Division who on Tuesday 8th of August took part in an assault on the village. The Battalion broke through the German line and occupied the village. Unfortunately the 4th Battalion attacking with them were stopped and pushed back. This left your great great uncle and his comrades isolated and cut off. They held on in the village until the evening of the 9th when exhausted and low on ammo and supplies were forced to surrender. All the ground is visible in the video. Thank you for sharing the information and may Private Edward O'Neale rest in peace.

Thank you for this. It's a very nicely done tribute and overview. I'm there next week to see where my grandfather was wounded in Trones.
