This is unreal. you have a forest, tennis court, campground, swimming pool all while being mauled by bunnies! And to top it all off , you have a WW2 chemical death camp to check out. Has to be one of the top 10 coolest travel destinations in the world. Definetley on my bucket list

luv2eatpuss79 I hope the bunnies are fenced out of the tennis court. Not cause I wouldn't want them to interfere with a game but I wouldn't wanna accidentally hit them with a tennis ball in a game. D:

Today this island was on Japanese TV show as "Rabbit Island attracts foreign tourists", but they didn't mention about island's historical background.
Recently Japanese people and government has put effort to make themselves look better to gather more foreign tourists. I think this video is educational not only for tourists but also for Japanese people.
    Thanks for sharing.

Great video! I’ve suspected that the rabbits got to the island by being used for chemical testing, and either escaped or were released and then rapidly multiplied. Many of the colors and patterns they have are not really seen with wild European rabbits, suggesting these rabbits mostly or completely came from the domesticated rabbit. While a domesticated rabbit normally released in the wild survives less than 24 hours, the lack of predators on this island has allowed them to thrive.
The behavior also suggests these rabbits come from a domesticated line. If the rabbits just like to lay down and watch people, that’s highly similar behavior to the house rabbit as watching movement & interaction is something they enjoy immensely. Their willingness to lay down and jump in the lap of people is also similar to house rabbits accustomed to significant interaction with people and without fears of predators.
With rabbits symbolizing affection, socialization, vitality, and future hope, I could not think of a better symbol for turning the page from what was once a place of death, suffering, and loss.

I had a pet bunny who past at the age of 15yo. He ate carrots, popped pop corn, lettuce occasionally, turnip greens, potatoes chips, cookies too. Not all the time but as a treat. My kids were feeding him that junk but our vet said his health was good. He died of old age.

  • @npaul4171
    @npaul4171 9 лет назад +6

Oh and the running in circles is a behavior used to show affection and mating intent. If a rabbit runs circles around your feet, it means "I like you" or "I am going to mount you later", and sometimes both. The jumping upwards in the air and kicking/jerking is called a "binky" and is a dance of happiness. They only display this behavior when they are happy, content, and relaxed with their settings.

i think eating rabbits is not uncommon around the world. Also there was no lack of respect to anything there at all, because it was a joke. And i took it seriously for a while. Didn't know japanese didn't eat them. That's a lesson learned for me.

I really dont see anything wrong with rat rabbit. I never eaten rabbit myself, but im interested in trying rabbit stew one day. Its not that i think the bunnies arent sentient but all the fanasty books made it clear that rabbits are a source of food.

Hi Kasia and Krzysiek! I just started my adventure with TheUwagaPies, but I know I will stay here longer. On the begining I watched a few accidental vlogs from different periods of time - now I start from begining and this video is amazing. You show dualism of this island - cute tourist attraction with striking knowlegde about past, I feel this deep inside. This is good material - give us some emotions.
Thank you for it. I hope so you will be well and do what you love. I cross my fingers for that.

"Those insect noises in the background are loud as hell"

      It's Cicada screaming.
It's a part of the Japanese landscape in the summer except maybe in Hokkaido.
People are so used to it, they would miss it if they stop screaming.
      lol
Since most of Japan are mountainous once you step outside the town the noise is deafening.

KR YW Perhaps an apt metaphor of mankind as well, unfortunately. I have a student in my history class who keeps asking "why so much war"? I asked him to note the gender he saw in our readings because as a woman I don't foment war. Not being feminist or conflictive here, but a male perspective on this question would be helpful to students who ask me this.

Tori White In a domestic setting this is true but from what I heard the lifespan of rabbits on the island is very short... only 1 to 2 years. The food people bring is not really good for rabbits. The need mostly pellets and hay. Carrots are bad for them and things like cabbage have little nutrition. I am sure they have maintenance people who remove dead rabbits while refilling their water bowls.
