Would appreciate your also specifying the focal length of the shot. I like to shoot at about 90mm and at 24" I am not able to get the head and shoulders. And, I do not find the face as pleasing with the shorter focal lengths, but I must say...you have done some beautiful and artistic work. ...so whatever you are doing is incredible...beautiful model, talented photographer. Thanks for the great videos
He was using the 24-70mm f2.8 canon L lens. It looked somewhat zoomed out to the tele end..how much i cant tell, but would hazard a guess very close to 70mm.
Well that was fast and easy setup. Problem is Westcott says in their video that storing the dish with the reflector plate installed voids warranty coverage.
Storing the deflector plate within the Beauty Dish or Rapid Box may risk tearing the fabric or bending the framework, which is not a manufacturer defect and would not be a damage covered under warranty. Setting it at the end of the carry case after the Beauty Dish or Rapid Box is already inserted should not cause any damage for local travel.
@@WestcottLighting Well my point is that in this video the plate is already installed when the dish is opened up. In reality it is a bit of a hassle inserting the plate into place on location. I appreciate you verifying what my comment above stated. Thanks for making it official.
Krystof, the Rapid Boxes now come in "Switch" versions. You would need this mount www.fjwestcott.com/switch-insert-speedlight for your speedlight. The Rapid Boxes Switch will allow you to change your mount quickly if you do want to use it with a studio strobe or Profoto A1.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Its almost shady to show a retouched and suggestively pass it off as straight from the camera through the use of monitor and graphics.
Mr. Grimes....full disclosure....my name is Grimes too therefore I clicked on this video based solely on the fact and like our name it's a great video. Thanks.
What light were you using with this? How powerful is the strobe? If you were using a speedlight would you move the light closer to compensate for less power?
Joel uses a strobe with a protruding flash tube. The beauty dish is designed for strobe lights so some adapter would be needed to mount a speedlite. With the modifier only 24" from your subject the power on your speedlite should be adequate to expose the image though the overall quality of the light could be affected by the more directional light of a speedlite.
Westcott takes pride in choosing long-lasting materials at the factory level. Beyond using the highest end materials, color accuracy is also very important to us. We test our fabrics meticulously and if it is not up to our standards, it is rejected. We know that time is money for most photographers, so working with gear that can break on the job or be a pain in editing is not our style. We think those few extra bucks are worth it in the long run, and you wont have to make the same purchase over and over. Thanks for your question.
The Beauty Dish is rated for up to 650 Watts. For the best results, use a light source designed for photography with a high CRI (Color Rendering Index). This could be a strobe www.fjwestcott.com/lighting/strobelite or a quality continuous light source that uses any of our available mounts.
There are many different versions of Beauty dishes all which produce slightly differing looks from a punchy, yet soft light. Joel worked with Westcott at every turn to develop this unit to create the look he wanted. Among other things, his Beauty Dish offers portability in a more rounded front surface than the octa (8 rib) versions of other portable beauty dishes.
Most Godox studio strobes have a Bowens mount or you can use one of their speedlight to Bowens adapters along with this version of the Dish. www.fjwestcott.com/rapid-box-beauty-dish#361=669
Mark, Personal preference will play a role as to whether you use the grid www.fjwestcott.com/rapid-box-beauty-dish-40-deg-grid or perhaps remove the diffusion front to achieve the light you want.
sorry to say this advertisement is misleading.. while joel grimes explained the concept very well but the images posted are completely retouched.. if you want to see real quality of modifyier you need to port un-retouched images..
Uh, that BD trick/distance from subject would NEVER work for me in a studio....since on my studio packs (2000 w/s) the lowest setting is 200w/s....which would blow out the subject- even at ISO 100 and stopped down all the way.

A beauty dish with a difuser is just a soft box
What focal length was you shooting at?
Thank you!

Hi there. Which adapter should I buy to get this working with a speedlight? Thanks a lot and great video. Short and to the point
Krystof, the Rapid Boxes now come in "Switch" versions. You would need this mount www.fjwestcott.com/switch-insert-speedlight for your speedlight. The Rapid Boxes Switch will allow you to change your mount quickly if you do want to use it with a studio strobe or Profoto A1.
would love to see the before pics to have a general idea of what we get rather than just the retouched image.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Its almost shady to show a retouched and suggestively pass it off as straight from the camera through the use of monitor and graphics.
Great video! Are those example images straight out of camera?
Joel Grimes is super boss.
I have this mod and it rocks. I have never used it in studio, but outside with my Flashpoint xplore 600 it's a beast. Great catch lights.
Keith, Thanks for watching, commenting and using Westcott products.🙂
I love this idea very much. Only thing I am thinking about grid. Do you have a grid for this light modifier? I wonder about that.
Hi Juan! There is no grid for the the Rapid Box Beauty Dish at this time. But we are listening!
I would be very happy if there is a grid for this specific foldable beauty dish 24"!
Juan, thought we should update this answer since the Grid has been available for some time now. www.fjwestcott.com/rapid-box-beauty-dish-40-deg-grid
Juan,
Grids are now available for all the Rapid Box and new Rapid Box Switch Modifiers
Phottix spartan beauty dish has grid
Mr. Grimes....full disclosure....my name is Grimes too therefore I clicked on this video based solely on the fact and like our name it's a great video. Thanks.
What is the light stand that is used in this video? I want to build that exact same set up.
What light were you using with this? How powerful is the strobe? If you were using a speedlight would you move the light closer to compensate for less power?

+F.J. Westcott Thanks so much for the reply, very helpful!
Beside price, what is the difference between this and the Godox or Flashpoint Glow equivalent?

What power was the strobe on?
How do you find that creamy look in your images? Any special action or preset?
Beautiful it makes me buy this modifier :)
Go for it! Thanks for watching!!
What light would you recommend to go with this modifier?
The FJ400 is pretty dope.

Can u use 2 speedlights with this beauty dish ? If yes then what speedring adapter can I use ?
You may want to check out the Westcott Rapid Box Duo
Zeno Watson Yes but I prefer this rounded shape over the octabox shape
can we use ordinary bulb of 100 watts or more in beauty dish ? or can we use flash light for this purpose ?
The Beauty Dish is rated for up to 650 Watts. For the best results, use a light source designed for photography with a high CRI (Color Rendering Index). This could be a strobe www.fjwestcott.com/lighting/strobelite or a quality continuous light source that uses any of our available mounts.
Thanks for the video. What lens did you use?
I believe Joel was using his 24-70 f/2.8.
Posible to place beaty dish 45 degree angle?
no sorry
is there a bowens adaptor
Art, the Joel Grimes Beauty dish is available in the bowens mount. www.fjwestcott.com/rapid-box-beauty-dish#361=669 the bowens is item #1450
Was he using Paul c Buff strobe?
Joel often uses Einstein strobes, so I'm guessing that's what he's using here. Sometimes he uses speedlights, probably Canon.
How different is it from.the traditional beauty dish ?

F.J. Westcott will this support godox flashes
Most Godox studio strobes have a Bowens mount or you can use one of their speedlight to Bowens adapters along with this version of the Dish. www.fjwestcott.com/rapid-box-beauty-dish#361=669
Wouldn't a grid also help in this shot

Would have been much better if you showed the unedited photo, so we know what we will get. Showing the edited version is not convincing.
