SO fun seeing this! My mom is Barbara Brier, playing Trix Parker. Have never seen her on film before- thought this film had been lost to time. Also, my father is Arthur Dreifuss, who wrote, produced, and directed this film. Thanks so much for posting this here- what a delight seeing my mom on film!

She's so pretty and sweet. I enjoyed the violinist, and the acting cast too. I remember seeing her in movies and lots of the others too. It must have been an interesting life with her. Thanks for mentioning it.

@@debbabbit5823 Thanks so much for the kind comment. My mom got out of the "biz" not long after this, in the early 50s. I believe that as a young upcoming, but not established, ingenue, getting pregnant took you out of the studio contract system. A big star could weather it but actresses like my mom were dropped by studios if they became pregnant. A different era for sure. We knew mom had done some acting after being in the Miss California Pageant, but she kept it under wraps most of her life. We discovered a treasure trove of hundreds of studio pics from Warner Brothers, Columbia, RKO Pictures, and more after she passed away. The boxes of memorabilia hadn't been touched in nearly 50 years. Fun fact, mom also designed all the period costumes for this film, and helped in the re-writes of the script. The Hollywood Reporter called her a "Jane of all trades" in a review of the film. And I actually never even met my father, Arthur Dreifuss, as they divorced when I was about 3 months old. Hollywood scandal...LOL! Thanks again for the comment...you are sweet to leave it.

Wow! Your mother bless her soul was a multi-talented lady; It's a shame that she had to quit for that reason, she did such beautiful work and was the miss California pageant... Persons like that do not come around too often. I am sure you are very proud. I hope you had a good life with her and even though she was dropped by studios, she had a good life. Thanks for sharing and God bless!

For my 10th birthday, I received a beautifully illustrated copy of 'An Old Fashioned Girl' -- which I read and re-read for years, until the book nearly fell apart! To me, it's equal to 'Little Women' on my favorites list.
I had no idea a movie was ever made, and can't wait to see it! I'll save it for the weekend, when I can cocoon in my room and ignore the outside world for a while. Thank you kindly for the upload!

    Wake unto me

    Sounds of the rude world
    Heard in the day
    Led by the moonlight
    Have all passed away
    Beautiful dreamer,
    Queen of my song
    List' while I woo thee
    With soft melody
    Gone are the cares of

I´ve read the book many times when I was a girl. I found this film QUITE different ! Polly teached Maude to sew with Grandmother: they made cloth for dolls; Polly went to skate on snow with Tom; Miss Mills flirted without telling her father; Polly was tempted with a pair of golden boots and spent all her money buying them. So she made a present for each one in her family with her own hands, knitting and sewing...

Great I like the little men and Little women they don't make them like this that's one of the reasons why Hollywood has gone down the tubesand just another reason why they don't do good anymore with the box office is because they don't make them like this I know you said to a person to be thankful for the classics time has moved on yes time has moved on but it's not for the better because Hollywood basically makes a bunch of crap right now they have lost all creativity they don't care about the audience all they care about is their left-wing politics they're wokeness and that is going to Doom Hollywood completely because the American people want none of that and Hollywood wants to throw their twisted moral viewpoint immoral viewpoint on to people who don't want it if Hollywood ever wants to get it right they need to make them like they used to make

There's really very little singing, just a few short songs.

I almost did too as I don't care for that type of singing (and I love singing!). A charming film just the same.

Tom plays the eldest son in Life with Father, Elizabeth Taylor also plays in it. I really enjoy the music in the old movies. Now actors fake being able to play an instrument. Back then they were multi talented and far superior to todays actors.

My guess is that author Louisa May Alcott wrote this story during the Civil War or shortly after as it was published in 1869. Quite a revolutionary plot about a young independent working woman for that time. I wonder if the Civil War influenced a lot of young women to become independent and self-sufficient like Polly. This never occurred to me until I saw this film. It's a charming film though it had too much singing for me (and I love singing!). In my opinion Mr Sydney is a better match for Polly as he supports a progressive female. On the other hand Tom is mismatched as he is too undependable.

Her first Student is a little Girl whose Mother just snobbishly approved of her first song to learn that ends with the words "Magic Spell!" That's weird!
