Expanding on what you mentioned about using refs- Something one of my profs in art school always said that has stuck with me was "draw what you see, not what you think you see". Our brains are so hardwired to symbolize and simplify stuff and it's SO important to break down what you're actually looking at- dividing it up into parts, looking at the shapes and angles and negative space between things, etc rather than what your brain wants to automatically assume from looking at your reference as a whole. These are all great tips btw, it's always good to be reminded of them no matter what skill level you're at ❤
Super helpful tips, thanks! especially going to start having clean and sloppy separate sketchbooks, always been in the habit of wanting them to look 'presentable' and then end up not drawing anything in it because I don't wanna mess it up.
