- 3 week 3,500 mile dual sport motorcycle camping adventure through WA, ID, MT, and the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route. This series is packed with camping and adventure riding over remote and scenic tracks with a bit of trail wisdom sprinkled in. Join me on this fun and informative series.
Ahhh...a trip like this is pure heaven. Thanks for sharing this series! I did a similar trip down from Edmonton, Alberta through Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota this July. There really is nothing better. Cheers.
It’s a real backcountry adventure area. Look forward to 2023 season.
I retire in 10 months, you are an inspiration and a motivation to get to the finish line, so I can get out there. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you. Retirement is sweet.
Never too old to be bold. As for me, I was born to be mild.
Looking forward to some similar trips next summer on my Guzzi V85 TT Centenario.
Thank you for the video! Great job.
Thanks. Sound like you are staying bold!
@@jrdepew Well my middle name is Panache so the Guzzi fits me fine. Still young at 69.
Great episode! Beautiful scenery and i like your commentary. :-)
Thank you very much!
Never too old to be bold JR! I watched your Wyoming series. Great videos and commentary. Now I am circling back to the start. What an epic trip!! Been through the Magruder a couple years back. Beautiful country!
Thank you very much! I think you know where of you speak. Got a few more Videos coming from the trip.
Looking forward too them!
Not sure how this got in my feed but I binged watched all the Wyoming BDR vids. Good content and nice to see you ride with your son. Anytime spent with adult children can be a blessing. Would love to do Wyoming as I live in AZ and have completed some stretches of the AZ BDR. Nice commentary and great people skills. I subbed the channel. I will be watching for more adventures. If you ever make it to Southern AZ along the border give me a shout. I know a guy who shot all the videos for each of the western states, great places to ride in this area. Keep on keep on brother
Thank you! Bisbee area? Would like to do the AZBDR. Are you speaking of Sterling Noren? I enjoy his videos a lot.
@@jrdepew yes sir, he has a big following for sure. Great guy and the reason why I travel and camp in the desert
Love your videos, I also ride a DR650. I am impressed that you still do this at your age, kudos to you and you are an inspiration to all of us older riders to keep going! I hope to do the Wyoming BDR this summer. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Greg, I keep say” I got one more year left in me”!
Hello JR. I have just come across your video channel and I just love watching your rides. Similar to how I like to ride. Looks like the dr650 serves you well. I have a KLR 650 and WR250r. I ride the WR when I am solo on the back roads. If they could shed some pounds off the KLR would be great. I am looking forward to riding more of Idaho. Just a ton of nice back roads and camping up there.
Idaho is a gem. I also have a WR250R that I’m preparing as a light Adventure Bike for this coming season. Thank you so much for watching and letting me know you like the content.
Hi JR, great footage so far of your ride. You have to love the surroundings when you ride solo and tell those stories of people from the past who traversed those trails. Y9u have great history in your country, thanks for a great video and commentary.
I really like your reports. Thank you
Thanks for watching and comments
Hell yea man! Only a few minutes in but love it!
Glad to hear it!
Starting from E1 , have subed and looking forward to the rest of the trip . I do it on a XT250 ( me , aged 64) Pete Western Australia 😎😎
Thank you Peter. this season I will be riding a WR250R . I enjoy several RUclips riders from down under.
@@jrdepew I have a channel and do some moto camping but plan to get more done this winter , summer here is way too hot and we have limited water to camp near . Looking forward to more from you . Pete
Nice. Subbed.
@@jrdepew Cheers
Great videos . Be safe RIDE ON .
Thanks, you too!
I stumbled across your channel and I really enjoyed the series. Great Job!!
Awesome, thank you!
@@jrdepew would love to see your track. Did you save it in a format that is able to share?
No. It was a combination of 4-5 tracks cobbled together. IDBDR, BOM (Best of Montana) WYBDR, and Sam Correro’s TAT and the WABDR.
@@jrdepew No worries. I haven't heard of BOM. Thanks for the tip!
Really enjoyed your video. We live in Dayton so it was fun to see that part. I stayed at the same campground on the Magruder, no flat tires though.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Dayton seems like a really nice place. I spent the night there on a Labor Day weekend passing through on this same motorcycle couple years ago returning from WA/ID BDR. Got the last room in town.
Good times ahead..... outdoors is awesome....
Amen to that!
Really enjoy your travels, JR. I'm in NC. And at 74, with ~50 years of street and highway riding, I'm trying hard to talk myself OUT OF buying an ADV bike. We'll see. btw, A few years ago I rode the paved hwy from Lolo to Lewiston and on up. Beautiful.
True, the days ahead are fewer than those behind and hard choices have to be made sometimes. Thanks for watching!
I'm a young kid to this conversation at 64 but I can't tell you enough about the joy dual sporting has brought to me. Local area rides just getting on a dirt or forest road can be amazing and so good for the soul. BDR's and TAT's are great but exploring your local area can be as rewarding too. Maybe a clean used mid-size bike in the 250-400cc range to try it.
Buy it! Ride it! Live it! 66
Right on.
Hi JR! Found you here and it has been a blessing to follow you! I’m an older rider as well (61 this year). Looking forward to some adventures into my senior years if the Lord wills.
Welcome aboard! Inspiration to keep fit and healthy best we can.
a great adventure!
Such a great ride Joe, I was last at Lewiston, Grangeville years ago back flying fires. Had an ATGS I flew with that lived in Darby MT. nice little town. It's great to see your ride and the awesome places the DR650 so faithfully took you. They are great machines. I had to laugh at you getting a late start and needing that coffee I'm rarely out the door as scheduled because I'm having my coffee🤣 Love the green potato bag on the back. I have the same, tough and high vis for sure. I've sure enjoyed these videos and apricate the effort to get them out so others can follow in your steps. 500+ subs! 👍awesome!!
Thank you. The green Sea To Summit bag has seen alot of use. I have a new deep Orange one I'm not so sure I want to be seen with though! Got some Black Rifle coffee going to try in the morning.
@@jrdepew I've heard good things about that coffee, I'm a poor KLR guy so store brand for me, I like the green potato use it full or half empty, Montana to AZ. Did a video "beyond Lake Powell" tossed it on the KLR with it strapped to the back. Orange is for you young kids.
I’ll check out that video. Good coffee or gas money. Hard choices 🥺
JR - are you willing to share your route information via GPS tracks for your trip to the start of the Wyoming BDR if you have them? Thanks! I have enjoyed all your videos and can't wait for the rest of the series as you cross the country.
Jeff
PS - I will put tohis message on your latest video as well.
Sorry. Don’t have a track as such. Several strung together along with Google maps.
Great video how long have you been riding, and safe travels mate from Australia
Got into serious riding in 2018 after 20+ years of not riding. After retiring I bought the DR 650 and rode 5,000 mile Trans America Trail.
Did the Idaho bdr this past summer and although I’ve traveled through this country before on a Harley, nothing has been better than the Klr and dirt roads
It’s a different experience altogether and if you’re into nature and adventure and self reliance the IDBDR is a great place for it. And of course, the KLR is classic!
What Trail Stand are you using? I haven't seen that one before and it looks compact.

Great videos!!! I’d love to know doing the music….
Some music is listed in the description automatically. Others not. Check that out and I’ll try to list the music in the future. Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
Hello, great content! Are you riding a DR650? If so, did you have any jetting issues on this trip? Thanks
Yep. I’ve put 20,000 miles on it from Virginia (TAT) across the Rockies and much more. I do have the Pro Cycle jet kit in it but have never had to adjust. More on my channel, thanks for watching.
Crazy bikers or ATVers cutting corners is exactly what worries me the most as I prepare to get very familiar with the NMBDR this year. Glad you were ready for them on this ride! What camera/mic setup do you use?
Can't get complacent out there. In the middle of nowhere....head on collision. Used a DJI Action. Cheap Mic was in helmet attached to camera with volume adjustment lead. Mic soon failed me. Do research and test thoroughly beforehand. Work in progress.
@@jrdepew I can relate to the mic research. I've tried the Purple Panda, Sena, another brand that I can't recall the name of, and currently using an $8 Sony that has proven to be the best of them all. Still not perfect though, but I think my Shoei Hornet X2 just lets too much air in, which causes crackling above 50mph. Work in progress like you say!
Maybe a flag setup for dirt sections, a fishing rod perhaps?
Great channel! How are your mic and camera set up?
Thank you for watching and commenting. Videography is a new venture for me in this series and not all went great. Camera is great, a single DJI Action, a in helmet mic that needs vast improvement. Too much wind noise at speed. A learning experience and should see improvements this next season.
Was it cheaper to prepare your own food rather than fast foods ?
I always carry food for camp preparation but if convenient I will grab a restaurant meal once a day. Maybe a a sub sandwich for camp. It’s a balance of eating healthy and convenience.
which motorbike do you ride ?
Suzuki DR650
What body armor do you wear?
Hey, thanks for asking. Forcefield Pro Air armored shirt under a jersey or my Revitt Territory jacket with its armor removed. Leatt Dual Axis Knee/Shin Guards. Warm weather generic gloves, ALPINESTARS Corizal boots. Be using the same this season.
