How to clean your pistol? (For new handgun owners)

  • Introduction to how to clean a semi automatic handgun. Using the Springfield XDs 9mm, we show how to take it apart (field strip) and clean the pistol. Explaining a little of how the gun works along the way.
    I did forget to mention that I usually finish by taking an oily rag and wiping down the outside metal parts as well. Then wipe it off with an old tee shirt. Just to keep the outer metal from getting any rust as well.
    Check out my other introductory videos for new hand gun owners:

    What a wonderful video. Perfect info, lots of explanations, and it's unusual to have a firearms instructor who is simply calm and easy going. Most teachers seem like gym rats on way too much coffee. And they're the star of the video, with lots of time in front of the camera themselves but not enough video of the firearms themselves. Thank you for make the gun the star of the show!! You're a rare find on RUclips.

      I'm still blown away at how many views this video has received over the years. I made it originally just because a friend of mine was a new gun owner and wanted to know how to clean their firearm. My friend lived over an hour away, so I decided a quick video would be the easiest way to get him the information. Decided to make it public in case anyone else wanted to know. Funny how those things happen. I still enjoy teaching to this day, but haven't posted videos to this channel in forever. Thank you for the kind comments.

    Warning! Read the name of the bottle of Hoppes liquid you are gonna use. The synthetic one to clean the gun ate the metal finish of my barrel on a Ruger P95. If it says only barrel is only for the barrel. If it says gun parts is for the whole gun. I threw away the synthetic cleaning oil because of that. It damaged the sexy shine of my barrel.

    Really helpful video for a beginner gun owner like myself. I notice that you can retract the slide easily by finger pressure and release the slide lock with your thumb. My XDs 9mm requires a great deal of force to retract and the slide lock is almost impossible to release with my thumb alone, I have to use a hard edge to release it. Is it possible that the recoil spring has too much pressure or should I inquire about it at the shop where I purchased it? Thanks again for the great video.

    Do you ever have to clean that copper barrel brush? If so, how?

    • @shootlearnshoot8144
      @shootlearnshoot8144  8 лет назад +3

      1035heb I don't clean them. You could wash it with water the copper won't rust. But it doesn't need to be really clean. the point of the copper brush is to break copper or lead fouling free from the barrel. Then your cleaning patches that you run through it should actually clean out the now loose pieces. So I just usually replace the copper brush when it seems it's lost its stiffness and won't do the job of loosening the stuff that shouldn't be in the barrel. hope that helps.

    I've seen serval of gun cleaning videos. All very good and helpful. However I have never seen one where any attention/cleaning is done to the spring assembly. So does it not need any cleaning at all? I have been cleaning mine whether it shows signs of being dirty or not but that just the way I am when it comes to anything. I just try to be as thorough as possible. I assume that I'm not harming it in any way. Please advise.

    • @shootlearnshoot8144
      @shootlearnshoot8144  8 лет назад

      Johnny Green Great question. From what I've seen, the spring assembly doesn't get very dirty. It's not exposed to the burnt powder or hot gasses like the inside of the barrel or bolt face. It's actually in a spot that keeps it quite clean usually. However, it's not a bad idea to wipe it down from time to time and put a little oil on it.

    • @shootlearnshoot8144
      @shootlearnshoot8144  6 лет назад

      I'd use a separate cleaner. Rem oil is just a lubricant as I understand it. If you want a single product to clean and lubricate I'd use CLP. It's good for cleaning and lubricating.

      Ryan DiAndrea CLP is a cleaner, lubricant, and preservative. Where the Rem oil is just oil. I personally just use CLP now. I spray it on wipe off all the dirt and then add a little more to the parts I think needs more oil.

It's the same as the aircraft formula but half the price. You can see SG cleaning videos on RUclips. Also check out the history of Ballistol for clean and lube. The German army used it for there rifles and pistols. Many many uses with Ballistol. You can buy online Amazon and other online stores.

      +A Brown My suggestion is that if you know you won't be shooting it for a few weeks, clean it before you put it away. A well kept gun will last for many decades. I usually run a bore snake through mine right after shooting regardless and then try to clean them if I know there will be a few weeks before the next time I shoot. Of course, if you are shooting a lot (many consecutive weeks in a row), don't not clean it unless you are trying to do a torture test :)

      +A Brown If its going to be used for defensive purposes, it needs to be cleaned after every time you fire it, or at least once a year, whichever occurs first. If it is just a pistol that you shoot for target practice and not for defensive use, clean it whenever you feel like it.

    STEP 1: Dry clean everything. Use dry clothes, brushes, etc to remove excess dirt.STEP 2: Spray CLP on the weapon. Wipe it down.STEP 3: Dry clean.STEP 4: Spray oil on the weapon. Wipe it down.STEP 5: Dry clean (or wipe off excess oil).Is this correct?

    • @shootlearnshoot8144
      @shootlearnshoot8144  8 лет назад

      That's pretty much it. Other than in step one, I'd only dry brush the barrel. Take a copper brush or bore snake through the barrel a few times dry. Then I'd use cleaner on everything. I wouldn't spend time dry wiping everything. It won't hurt anything, but just adds extra time. The cleaner (CLP or Hoppes 9) will take the gunk off faster than a dry wipe. Also, if I use CLP, I don't worry about oiling everything because it is a preservative as well. But I will still oil the moving parts.

    That is the worst cleaning a gun I have seen! The best way to using the small.cloths is to wrap them around the metal brush. The brush will bite the cloth and you can pull and push without the metal brush touching the barrel. Use the fattest wire brush that leaves a little clearance and single wrapped not double wrapped around the brush.

A drop in the right places is plenty. Check out Gunblue490 on RUclips. Never ever scrub back and forth with the brush. One way only. Get a bore snake a few passes and done.

      I'm not 100% sure what you are refering to. But if you mean working the slide back and forth. One reason is to make sure there's no round in the chamber before cleaning. If you fully cycle the slide a few times it should extract a round if there's one in the chamber. Of course, you still should visually check the chamber too. The reason you do it after reassembly is to verify function. That is to make sure you put it back together correctly. Lastly, it's fun and I like doing it!

That is with an UNLOADED gun practice picking it up and getting your grip while keeping your finger off the trigger and always pointing it in a safe direction. Lol. Fair point! Funny thing about this is I just made it to help a friend that just got his first gun and its the most popular one on my channel. Don't have much time for videos anymore, but I'm still teaching and training... and learning always! Hope it was still informative even though I got long winded.

    Its a pretty decent guide but i think that you made a mistake by not actually doing a whole cleaning routine. Explain as your actually cleaning, no just explain.
