My wife and I went from "it'll be easier to just buy the re-fill cartridge" to "that wasn't hard at all" to add line. Definitely much clearer than the instruction manual...
The Fixit Shed knocked these instructions out the park. The Kobalt manual instructions were woefully inadequate and at variance with actual way to restring my Kobalt trimmer. This video made life much much easier for me. Thank you and I have subscribed!
I have been banging my head all day because the replacement spools you showed (that I had already bought) didn’t fit. This worked! The only thing I would add - you briefly mentioned that the spool inside has to be lined up so that the line feeds INTO it. THAT STEP IS CRUCIAL! Other than that I was able to figure it all out. Thank you!
After years of owning mine, i JUST had to do it today...i took it all apart...WOW what a pain IN THE BUTT to do....now it wont go back on correctly. i used it briefly....and quickly ran out of string....i was soaked in sweat so im like yeahhh time to go to YT and I am glad I found your vid......I WAS DOING IT THE HARD WAY.
You make it look so simple. My wife and I took turns and finally gave up with about 18" on each side. Knob was a pain to turn, and by the time we gave up it wouldn't turn at all. My hands hurt, hers hurt, just from forcing that knob around. A tool that fits the bump head would be awesome, something with a T handle so you can get the leverage to turn it. I think we will end up trying to manually wind it in the future, has to be easier than this. Would not have bought this if we knew what a pain it would be. Thank you for the video, it shows we were doing it right, no matter how hard it was.
The knob does turn kind of hard. It is possible that it wasn't winding on the spool properly and that is why it jammed. I just did this agian a week ago, and had that happen to me. If I kept tension on the line while turning the knob, that seemed to work better. I bet someone with a 3D printer could come up with a handle for it.
Poor design, tore my hand up. The instructions are worse and i didn't think that is how it came from thr factory. I was happy to find your video right away but it i just way to hard not worth my time or the injuries. Has to be a better way. I bought this because it was cheaper than buying a new battery for my lawn mower, figured get a new better string trimmer. Works great, just difficult to reload
WOW!! So simple, Thank you! I have been pulling it off and stringing it that way for so long AND it didn't work properly, now I know why!! Thank you, thank you!!! You are a lifesaver!!
My wife bought this unit and my daughter just used the last of the string, found your video, discovered I had an unused role of .080 and cut off 13ft and fed it in less than a min. easiest refill I've ever done on one of these abominations. doing the Lords work here. thanks.
This was the best video on how to string the Kolbalt how it was intended, not by popping of the string attachment. It's much easier to string it using the method in the video, the intended method.
I'd like to add a suggested update. Lowe's, which is where I bought my trimmer, also sells a 5-pack of pre-curled line. I tried to follow your directions and couldn't get it to work since the pre-curled line, wouldn't go through the pilot holes, so the line wouldn't wind into the spool.. A trip to Lowe's solved the mystery. Your green line apparently was not hampered by the curl. We finally, after some experimentation, discovered that there is a slot in the middle of the internal spool that the line has to go through in order to come out the line-out pilot hole. We had to thread the line through that slot, hold the line down into the in/out guides, and put the top back on the spool. From there, everything worked as you advertised. I guess it should have been evident but wasn't. Perhaps add a picture of the internal spool and show the middle slot that the line has to feed through and it will simply the task even further for those who use the pre-curled line 5-pack. Otherwise, this video was very helpful!
Thanks for this! I have been thinking about making a follow-up video, as a few things seem to be tripping people up, and I want to address those. Glad you were able to get it figured out
Your video helped me out a lot! I had to take the cover off from around the feeder button only because when I inserted the string into the hole, it didn't go into the hole of the spool, only the housing. It was easy to push in the two prongs to open the housing and feed the wire on its correct path. Thank you for your video because I didn't know I could just twist the feeder button to wind the string once it was in its correct position.
I Wish I would have watched your video before.I started trying to rest?It because I was restraining it like a normally.Do my wife steal. I. Strung the damn cobalt probably ten different times and every time I would go to start it up , it would fling all the string out , you're a life saver , dude
Thanks for this guide. One reason I bought the Kobalt was the easy-wind string replacement. I have had trimmers in which you replaced the spools or re-strung them, but I prefer this. I've rewound the string on mine several times, but I always forget how to do it. I did a search and kept coming up with complicated guides that tell you to take off the spool and wind on the cord and replace it on the trimmer. Those never work for me. the cord ends up locking up and I have to take the head back off to free the cord. The winding method always works for me until I reach the end of the string. I have bookmarked this easy guide for future reference.
Thanks for your video, I have watched my son do this several times. I borrowed his weed eater and it was so hard to load. After watching a few videos, even though you do have to push down to get it to turn and load. You do NOT have to hurt your hands or get blisters like I did and a few others that commented below. Please add a video that shows how to take the head off and clean it. Grass clippings and sand get caught in there and that is what is causing the jamming / hard turning. It is very easy to do and saves a lot of time and effort. A little wd-40 after cleaning and it works like a charm :) Added note, if you are not mechanically inclined, take pictures during each step so you can put it back together properly. Placing of the internal head must line up. Thanks again!
Wow! That was a piece of cake, Thank you! The Kobalt replacement trimmer line from Lowe's does not fit the Kobalt trimmer for some reason. I had read reviews on the Lowe's site and just about everyone had that problem.
Thanks so much just did this this morning very easy last time I had took the spool apart and did it manual didn’t know I had the easy feed. Very good weed eater for such cheap price
I’ve been banging my head on this. Bought the wrong replacement head even though they said it was the right one. I had leftover string and followed your instructions now no more headaches. All i can say is THANKS!!!
I am glad you found my video and it help you get it all straightened out. It is actually a good design, and way easier than tring to wind it by hand. I just had to restring mine yesterday. It only takes a few minutes once you know how it works.
I guess the trimmer we have is about the same even though this vid is 2yo. It sorta helped, but my holes aren't what the manual says and it always looks easy in a YT. The one thing about was, you need a pair of gloves on to twist up the string so it doesn't peel the skin off your hand. But thanks for posting 😁
WHAT?!?!?!? That was super easy :) I was doing it by hand & it kept unwinding ...PIA!! I'm going to follow your steps now & hope it's actually that easy!! Thanks in advance for this tutorial!!!
This helped me a lot. I tried to follow the directions in the manual that came with a new trimmer using the other method but the directions were so vague and poorly illustrated that I could not do it even after hours of trying. Finally found a video showing me how to do the other method(the manual is worthless) but even then I could not keep the string from unwinding trying to put the spool back into the trimmer head. Your video solved the problem for me using the easier method. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I have the kobalt kst 2540-06 40 volt model, and I can't find replacement spools anywhere! The factory instructions are worthless! Your video made it crystal clear. It's actually really easy now! Thanks again! 😊
My mistake was bumping this on hard surfaces like my driveway or sidewalk and completely wore out the bump on my Atlas. Finding a replacement is very difficult even though the head is the same as the Kobalt and what you show. Twisting off the assembly to adapt something else is also proving to be very difficult.
Awesome, I didn't even know this was a feature until I watched this. Made winding the string super easy. I have the KST-180-06 plug in trimmer and it's the same for it.
Thank you so much for making this video, we could not find the pre wound spools for our model anywhere, apparently it’s discontinued, after watching this video I can finally restring it myself
I have had this trimmer for two years! Two years of hand spooling! Today I said there has to be a better way. Then I see this video… I feel like a moron lol
Yes, some people seem to have trouble feeding it through the spool correctly. I did a follow up video where I more fully explain it and show how to remove the coverl and thread the spool that way as an alternative method.

probably a weird and late question I have this model and I am just missing the spool I dont need anything other than that correct? no spool caps or anything? just put the spool in and it should be fine?
I think that is correct, if I understand your question. I do have a video where I remove the cover to show how to access the spool. That might help you to see what is in there. I don't pull the spool out, unfortunately. ruclips.net/video/zgH6FsQgDs0/видео.html
You make it look so easy. I've had mine since last year and just now having to restring because I am just beginning to use this one. My question is what if there is still some string left on the spool. Will the string that's in there completely deplete itself at some point or will I have to remove the old ends?
Usually what happens is it gets down to the last 8 or 10 inches, and then that much just flings itself out of the head. You might want to check out this video where I go into a bit more detail, and have some new tips: ruclips.net/video/kytjKx78BC8/видео.html
If you turn the knob and the string does not get pulled in around the spool, it is not fed correctly. See this video for better detail: ruclips.net/video/kytjKx78BC8/видео.html
How about grease for the head of the kobalt weedeater? They get extremely hot. Don't you need a grease that can handle high temps? What about other moveable parts that need lubrication??

Thank you so much, I really nuked this one, took it apart and tortured myself lol. I have a makita with the same design in case people are looking for the same problem I had.
Mine does not come out on the other side of course. I have everything lined up and when I thread it through it meets resistance and never comes out on the other side
The strings keep going in the whole so hard to get it out! I saw a video that starting the trimmer and tapping the protection gear against the floor will bring the trimmer but did not work for me. Any tips please?

I’m turning the top but the string isn’t moving, what am I doing wrong?
A new video addressing this just went up this morning ruclips.net/video/kytjKx78BC8/видео.html let me know if that helps

Thank you so much, I really nuked this one, took it apart and tortured myself lol. I have a makita with the same design in case people are looking for the same problem I had.
Glad the video helped you out!
Could you tell me what is the trimmer head part to replace an old trimmer that does not have the easy-feed line feature. Thanks,
J M Hanson
If you find one, let me know. Finding any prts for these trimmers is impossible.

Thank you so much for the Super Thanks! It is much appreciated and I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Mine does not come out on the other side of course. I have everything lined up and when I thread it through it meets resistance and never comes out on the other side
Check out my other video where I go into a lot more detail and show Lternative methods ruclips.net/video/kytjKx78BC8/видео.html
🤯🤯🤯 I’ve been doin things the hard way.
You are not alone.
The strings keep going in the whole so hard to get it out! I saw a video that starting the trimmer and tapping the protection gear against the floor will bring the trimmer but did not work for me. Any tips please?
try this video -> ruclips.net/video/kytjKx78BC8/видео.html it has a lot more detail.
