There are homeschool groups now. Basically a parent of another kid who is being homeschooled takes in a whole group and makes sure they are learning what they need. You then do what you can for extra curriculars. probably coordinate with parents in the group to put your kid on the same teams as thier kids.
Basically build a new community of like minded people. You are not alone.

We did a co-op thing at our church where we met every Friday and did a few classes with other homeschooled kids in our grade. This was nice for harder classes like chemistry where we may not have had all the equipment at home… we had 136 homeschool kids at the church every Friday split into grades. Also I did sports at the public school so it wasn’t like I was living in a cave somewhere with no friends. I loved being homeschooled. The relationships I have with my family are amazing. I view all my siblings (I have 3) as best friends. They were also homeschooled. I also am getting married in 15 days😃. My kiddos will be homeschooled 100%. I have no regrets.

That's how so many fall through the cracks bc there's no one on the outside who sees what's going on. I think homeschoolers should have to report to cps/be subject to random audits from social workers to minimize this risk bc even though that's invasive thats the only way to ensure children aren't be horrifically abused and neglected under the guise of "home-schooling"

I’ve found that it is a combination of the parents and the personality that kid was born with. I have 4 kids who I homeschooled and 3 are super outgoing while one was born very introverted. While extracurriculars are important they will never turn an introvert into an extrovert. When my oldest switched to the public high school from homeschooling she blended right in and no one could tell unless she told them. It’s all about the personality.
On that same note there are a lot of kids in the school system who are introverted, shy, and behave oddly. Likely they would have been like that if they’d been homeschooled too but they weren’t. It’s not the place of schooling that is causing that “weird” he’s talking about.
To her point though, it is healthy for everyone, including introverts, to get out there and be around others. There are lots of ways to do that outside of the school system, like extra curriculars, neighborhood friends, coops, field trips, city/neighborhood events, taking kids on your errands, etc.

As a recently graduated homeschooler I can say from what I’ve seen over my 12 years of schooling is that we’re far more behaved in a group setting. If there was ever a situation where I was at church in a large group setting, the adults never had to worry about us. While they were yelling at the top of their lungs trying to get these kids to listen to them, we’d be sitting in a chair waiting for everyone to shut up and listen.
Also guys…. If you feel that my comment is attacking you, go somewhere else. I’m simply stating that I was much more behaved than all my public schooled friends. I’ve had multiple replies saying that “that’s no a brag” and the proceeding to say that “I was behaved and life kicked me in the balls” that doesn’t mean everyone will end up like that. So please, take upset comments somewhere else.

That isn't the flex you think it is. I was that kid. My mom had us trained like that and adulthood slapped us like a shit ton of bricks. There isn't anyone to tell you what to do when your 30. And not a single soul cares that you were the first one to stop talking in a room full of adults. I didn't stop getting taken advantage of for naivete until I was a little past 30. I realized nobody cared I was well behaved, and they used the fact that I would comply and do the right thing to make me come up last.

This isn’t a brag. That’s the problem with homeschooling. People think children being silent and chill is a sign of good behavior. Why do children need to be obedient to be deemed as respectful and good? Children should be treated as equals. Children should not be sitting still and in silence. Children being quiet and still is just as bad as children being loud and out of control.

    • @mandrake7971
      @mandrake7971 Год назад +7

To the comments under this post:
I don’t think it’s so much about being “well behaved” as it is about being respectful. If you are only ever quiet, or don’t know how to stand up for yourself, then that IS an issue. However, it is necessary to learn how to listen, be polite, have self-control, and to be a respectful to other individual. As a homeschooled student who was more on the quiet side, I was quiet because I wanted to learn, and I couldn’t do that while my peers were being distracting and downright rude. I also value other people’s opinions, thoughts, and emotions, but that requires me to be quiet and listen. Sometime input is better than output.
It’s ultimately about situational awareness though, which can come in many forms. Both sides of the coin have benefits, but I think it is also good to be able to use your voice and actions accordingly.

@@mandrake7971 they said a group setting. Not a classroom. I'm 35. Wait for the drop kick life has in store for this kid. I thought I was mature because I was quiet and well behaved. By the time 25 came around I was the least mature of my friends because I had to deal with growing pains when I was full grow (which takes way longer, is super frustrating, is embarrassing, and hurts way more). You're supposed to find your voice, and find out were boundaries are when you're a kid. And unfortunately for the public at large, that means kids have to cross them sometimes. But, you remember you were a kid once and let it go.

I grew up homeschooled since I was six, and my parents put me in martial arts at ten, which made a dramatic difference on how my social skills were (for the better, of course.) So my advice to parents who are choosing to homeschool your kids: if you can afford it, put them in an activity where they'll make friends and interact with others. It makes a HUGE difference.

I would not call this generation of children in public school properly socialized at all. I started college in my mid-20s and the people just coming in from HS to a couple years out were extremely weird imo. They all wanted to tell you their life story and what trauma and mental problems they had, as if any of that was remotely appropriate converstaion with a stranger. No boundaries, no privacy, and no concept of appropriate conversation or how to speak to their peers or other adults. Also no work ethic, which gave me a tremendous advantage upon graduation.

It definitely comes down to the parents. My best friend is a homeschooled family and they are the weirdest kids I’ve ever seen. Their parents don’t let them do anything and they never leave their house. I went to the pool with them though, but they were still weird. My best friend is around her parents so much that she has morphed into them. She has lost all motivation for college at this point.

Now days, there are many more resources for home schoolers not only for the parents to teach them, but for them to socialize, such as groups and outings. My daughter is homeshooled and she gets all of her work done very quickly so she and my wife can go to museums and groups. She's 6 and studying on a second grade level, I dont think she would have been able to do that if my wife and I weren't involved in her work and pushing her. I look at public schooling (which is what I went to unfortunately) as the bottom tier of learning compared to the resources that are available now.

The parents wanted to keep them from public school influence but couldn't afford either of the catholic private schools in my area. Though these kids interacted with other children, they had such strict rules and were so uptight that me, a public school kid, had a hard time interacting with them. I didn't fall into the drugs, alcohol, or party group in high school and I was a relatively good kid, but because of how their schooling was structured and how they were to spend their days, it became very hostile for any of the public school kids at my church to be friends with them.
On the other hand, I was in ballet for a few years and everyone but me and one other girl was home schooled. These girls were amazing. The kindest, smartest, most social and well manored kids I've ever met. They didn't push me aside because we weren't educated the same and they treated me like a genuine friend.
