  • Learn "Patsy Touhey's Reel", a great session tune, with Tunes From Doolin.
I learned "Patsy Touhey's Reel" many years ago from the playing of Terry Bingham and it was one of my favourite tunes for a long time. However, for some mysterious reason it slipped my mind and I hadn't played it for quite some times, until I heard Jack Talty playing this tune with John Blake in early 2021. I loved Jack's version and have been playing it again since then. I also associate this tune with Dublin whistle player Gavin Whelan, and Leitrim piper Brian McNamara, who both recorded great versions of this reel.
Patsy Touhey was a great piper from Galway who emigrated in America and became one of the first pipers to be recorded in the 1920s.

    Hello,
I am writing to ask if you could recommend any tune sets that would be originally from the Doolin area.
I am trying to find sets of tunes that are indigenous to different areas. I am hoping to find tunes and sets whose origins are thought to be from and capture the sound of that area, so West Clare v East Clare v East Galway for example...
If there are a few sets that are Doolin area in origin I would appreciate the tips.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
    Ryan

Hi Ryan! Thank you so much for your comment and what a lovely project you have! Is it for a recording, or study project?
I am not sure how sets can be associated with an area in particular, I think it's very often down to the musician(s) who made the set "famous". For example Micho Russell would be the source for the set "Sean Sa Cheo"/"Boy In The Gap" (which funny enough is mostly played in reversed order these days!). Does that make sense?
Another set that people associate with Doolin is the combination "Tomeen O'Dea's"/"The Ballykett Courthouse" (which I recorded on the album "Aughavinna" with my friend JB Samzun). The tunes themselves are not from Doolin, but it seems to be a set that people associate with the village for some reason.
I hope that helps, feel free to drop me an email in case, I'm happy to talk about this in more details!
