    Really appreciate the little things in the video. For example pointing them all out with a laser and telling us all the sizes needed. It's a big help and also nice to see before you do if your just a weekend warrior or someone learning. Keep it up!

    Steering shaft on the driver's side #4 is in the way. Charge pipe on #2 is in the way. Releasing it on the top side gives you enough play to get to the glow plug and get it out. The steering shaft is supposed to come apart for #4 but I couldn't get mine to separate. I got lucky and got it out and got the new one in. Absolutely use the never seize. Good video. The glow plugs are running $30 for AC Delco now so I'm replacing them as they fail. I would be careful with anything aftermarket if the electrode breaks off it will grenade your motor and that gets expensive to save a few bucks. Thanks for this video, it's always nice to have a reference before doing this job.

      Auto lite was the only ones available when I bought them. Struggled for thirty Minutes to get the wires tight before the plug fell apart. When and got NGK right side completely changed in 5 minutes. DON’T USE AUTOLITE!

    Thank you for the video. Not much out there to guide you on how to do this for the first time. I’m very experienced with cars but not really with diesel or bigger trucks and I need to watch a video on how to do it to not break something or make mistakes and you save me. I’m actually helping a friend out that is clueless to cars. Thank you.

      Welcome. Best advice is pre-soak it in penetrant or auto trans fluid and clown fish it. Back it out a little and back in out some more and back in till it's smooth coming out. If you think it's going to break after trying that, try it when the engine is hot- exercise caution for burns and fire hazard with whatever you've soaked it with. Stick a crayon into it to melt into the threads in there. The wax can lubricate it and help it crack free.

  • @ShastaCountyLand
    @ShastaCountyLand 9 лет назад +6

    Great video. Helpful hint to those who only have the number 8 plug out. You can access from underneath the truck without taking off wheel well plastic (which is a pain). Only tricky part is getting the new one lined up. Look carefully where it is when it comes out. It is right next to a fairly big bolt. And you can see the machining in the block from the wheel well side that contours to the shape of the plug.
    Note, it helps to have scrawny forearms like mine. Steve Garvey and Popeye type guys might have some trouble.

      briansmobile1 hey ty bud. I am looking at buying a 2001 duramax 3500 4x4 dully. the owner says it's got glow plug issues no start. so I been looking up your videos and I am more confident to buy this truck now that I have your videos. at first I was uninformed and reluctant to consider it.

    This is a wonderful video very informative. I'm looking because I just got myself a dyramax and I like to do all of my own maintenance and I have only changed the glow plugs in a 94 detroit diesel. With that said I made the mistake of putting something on the threads when reinstalling them. DONT PUT ANY THING ON THE THREADS OF A GLOW PLUG!!! I had to immediately replace the ones on my 94 because if it. And it's harder to see in the duramax without a wait to start time. The glow plugs grown on the block .

    She actually had her baby on Wednesday and things went easy/great and they're both home now. If you're not towing anything heavy, I'd get a 1/2 ton gas truck. If you're towing anything 10K lbs or more it's best to get a 3/4 ton diesel.

    Great to see this. Had a P0677 code so need to change #7. Came out easy but the new one going in would not go in like it should. This is a 2011. Mic'd the shafts and found a few thousands difference in the main shaft in front of the threads but the real problem was the glow shaft. it also was 3 to 4 thousands to large. Stuck the plug in a drill and used sandpaper to reduce the diameter. Thanks again Brian!

  • @briansmobile1

    Diesel engines don't have spark plugs because the compression is so high it ignites the diesel fuel automatically with heat and pressure. Starting the diesel is a problem. The glow plugs work like the grid on a windproof lighter to help the motor to get started. Once the motor is running, it can let the glow plugs go offline electrically till the next starting cycle.

  • @jdxnc04
    @jdxnc04 11 лет назад

    Exactly, and everything is accessible just by popping the hood! I've only once had an issue with the grid heater, the ring terminal on to the batter broke off, not bad for a 19 year old truck.

  • @jeffwilliams707
    @jeffwilliams707 4 года назад +1

    Trick to NOT lose the small nut on top of glow plug - place a small piece of electrical tape (sticky side down on socket) over the end of 11mm socket. force the nut in. It will stay in until you remove it. then easily extract it with finger nails. One piece of tape did all 8 plugs easy. Use this to put them back on as well - saved me a lot of time and risk of losing a key part.

      I'm sure you figured it out by now, but for anyone else searching for the answer: I just took a ratchet strap and wrapped it around the steering shaft. With a little bit of downward pressure, I was able to fit a 3/8" drive 12mm deepwell socket in there no problem. I also used a short extension so the ratchet clears.

    I tried to find the type of hose clamp tool you use here with no luck. Could you post the brand and model? Thanks for your help.

    Thanks man good video! I have to change my number 6 also, do you prefer Bosch or AC Delco? Also if you do one might as well do them all correct? Thanks again for sharing! Oh the AC Delco glow plugs at AutoZone are $18.49 per compared to Amazon.

      I like AC Delco anymore for glow plugs. I use Bosch for injectors and kitchen tools. Yes- do them all. You're welcome! Cool.

    Another great job and addition to your great collection of videos! Question: Have you ever had one snap off when trying to get it out? If so, what is the protocol after that?

      For anyone else having this issue, you must remove the bolt on the steering shaft, keeping the steering wheel stationary, and push up on the upper shaft after the bolt is removed. This will push it up and out of the lower shaft. The lower shaft will now hang down towards the frame and out of the way so you can remove #4 glow plug with ease. Re assemble, and assure the bolt is very tight! Do not use a ratchet strap to pull the steering shaft as this will damage it

      Get a wobble drive or a flex drive quarter inch extension
